I actually forgot I had the demo disc, it got shoved aside. It came with the last Shonen Jump. I will play it tonight and edit this post with my impressions.Quote:

It just seems like it's late in the game to switch back to the original title.
...but then again, this is an incredibly different-looking game for the series, and it took us until the 7th Final Fantasy game to get the numbering right here. Go figure.
It's fun. Really, really charming, and the overworld feels huge, which is a nice change from the miniturization and abstraction of most overworlds. It feels like it's going to be an epic game without the pretention that usually goes with that, which is nice.
The whole Dragon Warrior / Dragon Quest deal only happened because of a TSR D&D copyright issue, which isn't applicable now-a-days so the naming discrepancy is finally over. Hooray.
Uh DQ8 is good stuff. Plenty to do (about half as much as DQ7, so for most people that'll be more than enough), looks good, sounds good, and most of the story is presented well.
i heard somewhere that the music in the US release won't be synth but orchestrated or whatever. is this true?
My thoughts pasted from another forum:
I was able to spend some time with the demo yesterday and here are my thoughts. Very Happy
I've always had interest in the series, but I've never really enjoyed any of the games. I was super excited about DW7... and it ended up being one of the few games I've returned in the last few years.
But the Toriyama art and good looking screenies and movies has got me excited in another DW game, and luckily I was able to try out the battle demo today and I'm excited enough that I think I'll be picking this up.
The demo has a battle mode (run around some forest and plains fighting monsters) and a story demo, which I've read is over two hours long, though I haven't tried it yet.
The battle system seems good, if your run-of-the-mill jrpg turn based deal, but there seemed to be a variety of attacks so thats cool. Also, even though the battles are random, I didn't feel like I was getting them too often, and what battles there are go quickly.
Toriyamas art looks awesome in polygons btw.
So yea, I'm pretty excited. :D
Thanks for the impressions, sounds pretty cool. I really hope my demo comes soon, I've been looking forward to checking this out for a while now.
I'm curious about this too, that would be really neat.Quote:

also, i got some info on the new skill system from some faqs i read. you get skills from weapons...kinda like final fantasy 9 or tactics advance. you get skill points from fights to use however you want with each weapon....so you don't just level up with a sword and eventually get such and such skill. once you have the points you can use them however you want. uh...i think that's pretty much it...unless someone else can explain better or knows more about it.
With each level up (more or less; each character has a fixed progression of earning SP), you get a set amount of Skill Points that you can distribute however you want, and based on the amount of SP you have in each "job", you earn higher titles which give you skills and/or bonuses (ie, having 100SP in Sword makes your sword attacks +20 or something). All characters have 5 "jobs"; 3 weapon types, one unique-to-character type, and bare-handed combat.
Everyone has a ceiling of like, 300SP or so at the end of Lv99, meaning it's possible for you to max out 3 of the 5 job types per character for playing the game normally. If you really wanted to max all characters out in all jobs (which I don't see the need for), you'd have to go out and find (monsters to kill in order to get) Skill Seeds to make up for the lack of points.
You don't have to use specific weapons to earn specific Skill Points or anything, either; you can fight barehanded 100% of the time and throw all SP into sword fighting if you really wanted to.
Did anyone else pre-order the slime controller? I did, because I'm a dork. The cashier at EB thought I was insane.
The slime controller made it over here?
Yeah at EB.
You are. It's pretty much unusable.Quote:

LOOK at it....
I have a non-controller plushy that was free. I'll stick with that.
I still havent gotten my demo in the mail :(
I played through the the Japanese version months ago but stopped at about 12 hours and never got back to it. It was fun, but it didn't pull me in as much as, say, Tales of Rebirth. I really have to pick it up again one of these days and give it another go.
I got the demo today. I haven't played the story mode yet, but the battle gives you a lot to explore. Whenever i think it's going to end, it keeps going. I'm also surprised at the lack of roped-off areas.
The world is beautiful. Extra points for Level-5 for letting the player have a first-person view to look around. Battle animations are also extra good. DQVIII is a reason to have a PS2, rama.
edit-heh... i typed factor5 by accident.
i finally got mine on friday so keep checking that mail box.Quote:

I got one today, as the demo arrived. Gorgeous art on the cover of both the sleeve and the disc.
Pre-ordered the Game, slime controller, and guide at gamestop. Can't wait. This is one of the few games I'm truly excited about. DW7 was good, but a little long.
Kinda disappointing to hear that the job system from 7 isn't in this game though.
I lost. No demo for me.
i was dissapointed too, but this system seems pretty interesting and you can still do some of the same things with your characters as far as i can tell. i'm so tempted to have everyone go "barehanded" so i can get their critical hit rate and agility up the most.Quote:

Sucks- that you can't save. I had to turn it off before i was done, but otherwise i was happy as could be. This is my favorite game, next month, probably. It's an obvious as all fetch quest, but there's a lot of characters in those characters, and it's a demo, so duh.
Here's the thing that'll drive away most people... Remember long ago, once upon a time, when console rpg's were new and you had to wander back and forth between dungeon and town to level up and/or get money for stronger armor? That's what you do in the demo. I was in the dungeon, had a character killed off, dragged his sorry ass to town to revive, buy stronger stuff, went back to dungeon, had a character killed off... etc., etc., etc. I kind of like that element, but i'm different. It all started when i was about 5 years old, and TG&Y never did get that last Constructicon. I could build it all, except for ONE GOD DAMN PIECE! Now i'm trying to build it again, but it's all there! I can finally do it! So these days-
(15 paragraphs later)- and now i'll get to the game itself. You see, this girl i was talking to said that i shouldn't be wasting my money on this stuff, but it's Dragon Warrior, or rather, Dragon Quest, and it reminds me of my days with Nintendo Power when...
Quick! Who am i? Who am i?
I got the demo today as well. Tried the battle mode for a little bit. It seems like it'd be a good game but I dunno, the battles just felt a little slow for me. FFX-2 spoiled me.
Where are all of you getting this demo?! Are u supposed to get it when you pre-order, or from somewhere else?
That Tom guy I fucking hate.Quote:

I'm not sure about this game. I used to really love RPG's although my interest has definitely been waning as of late. That the game has been developed by Level-5 (correct me if im wrong) has piqued my interest, as I liked Dark Cloud and absolutely loved Dark Cloud 2. I think the last RPG I really got into was FFX, and that was what, four years ago.
OoooOOo.. Thanks I should get it when the game comes out.
... Click many.
I don't want to play this game simply because it'll mean I have to review it, and it would take OMFG forever for me to finish. It's funny how a game's length is such a plus for gamers and such a minus for reviewers. On topic, DQ8 is pure old school gameplay with purdy graphics. A nice, relaxing sort of experience to play into the wee hours of the morning, until the music drives you mad.
Well, supposedly it's not the insane neverending bullshit that VII was, which is nice.
Yea, no shit. VII went on forever. I think when I finally beat that game it took me like 130 hours, and I didn't get all the extra stuff, or win at the casino either.
i wonder what it would've been like to play dragon warrior 7 back in the old days when we didn't have many rpg's to play at all. maybe there'd be less complaints about the length of the game.
Played the demo a little today, it's ok. Maybe I'm spoiled by all the non-traditional JRPGs and just cant' really say the battle system is much.
It's old school, and I like it.
is there voice acting on the demo?
Yes indeed.
Is it horrible?
For the most part, not at all. It's much better than what I've come to expect from Sqaure-Enix.
Got mine in the mail, going to play it in a bit.
I'm going to just put this out there and I know that no one will agree with me- but I miss the old american artwork for Dragon Warrior. I loved the box art for 1-4 on the NES and I really hate the japanese stuff....so it's going to take some getting used to.
Ahem. I mean 'Dragon Quest'. For shame.
Surprisingly enough, it's very well done, in a cartoony sort of way. Much better than FF10.Quote:

Mine arrived yesterday. Yeah, it's got surprisingly good voice acting. One funny thing I noticed is that the text and dialogue seems formatted for PAL regions. "Civilisation", "Armour", etc. The green guy and large oaf both have good british accents, too. :D
This is definitely going to be an amusing, light-hearted game. If I'm gonna play a jRPG, that's usually what I prefer. The monster/character animations are incredible, especially the puppeteers in battle mode. They made me LOL for reals.
FUNNY STORY FTW
what was the last dragon warrior game to have that whole "thou/thee" thing going on? and was that just strictly an american release thing?
I got the demo in the mail and played a bit of it. Honestly, this is just the traditional kick-in-the-pants I want. I may very well purchase this.
One thing I did like, now that I mention it, seems to be that the entire world map is treated like any other location, but huge. No overhead view or simple icon running around that immense filed separated occasionally by mountains or water. Now, it all seems reasonably-sized with a normal, behind the back view.
I got it as well, and...I dunno. It's just SO traditional that I feel like I've played the game a thousand times before.
Yes, but not as pretty :)Quote:

Dragon Warrior 2. It's not everywhere like in 1, though. With 3 and beyond it was nowhere to be seen.Quote:

The chick in this game has a monstrous cell-shaded rack.
well, back in the day you had to have a big rack or you'd be put to death or something.
We should bring this shit back... no fat tits though, just nice ones.
what do you mean "no fat tits?" sometimes fat tits are nice. so long as they're proportionate to a girls size.
I'm saying a fat girls tit's are not as nice as a proportionate pair.
but a fat girl can have proportionately fat tits.... as a skinny girl can have tits that are too big for her body....yeah.
i started playing gbc dragon warrior 3 again 'cause i haven't beaten the bonus dungeon boss that gives you the 3 wishes. i forgot how hard the area/boss was.
Don't forget to collect every gold medal. :sweat:Quote:

There was a legend on Gamefaqs that some guy actually got every gold medal. I think I remember reading he estimated it took him over 500 hours. heh.Quote:

WoW is an amazing game make no mistake.
What is crazy about MMO's though is that they keep track of the time you have played in days. It's not it says 14 hours, it says 14 days, which is 14 x 27 hours.
Crazy.
Actually it says X days X hours X minutes. And last I checked there wasn't 27 hours in a day.
I was pushing 600 hours when I stopped WoW.
You don't have a 27 hour clock? LOL, NOOB~!
ok, so, i finally got to play the demo at a friends house and....wow...i am so pleased and even more excited about this game. i played through the battle mode for a while and...yeah...the animations on the characters and enemies are so great. on thing that really got me going was seeing this...devil like character do a "sultry dance." i remember playing dragon warrior 2, running into that one monster called a puppet man. he'd dance a strange jig and you'd loose mp. i thought the text was so funny at the time...and kinda imagined how silly it'd look if it were animated. so...finally getting to see something like that in a dragon quest game...feels really good. the voices were a lot better than i thought they'd be. not all of the characters have english accents, though. the characters that did talk all sounded very natural and charming. i didn't get to finish the story mode. i found some guys toolbox/bag and he gave me cheese for the rat....then i got lost and died...but i enjoyed every minute of that demo. best demo ever.
Yeah, I just tried out the demo too, and I really enjoyed it. I just put enough time in to see a little bit of the town and world, and try out the battle system a bit, but it was a lot of fun. Very bright, colorful game, and the environments are huge. The world map looks very WoW-ish in size.
Except with a much, much nicer pair of cel-shaded funbags.Quote:

Anyone who hasn't tried it yet needs to get this shit. 40-person super dungeon raids are a sight to behold, even if the said group is a bit on the sucky side.
I'll be surprised if DQ8 actually succeeds at dragging me away from Azeroth.
back to dragon quest 8. has anyone done the "intimidate" thing in battle? when i first tried it a laughed my ass off at the main character raising her arms and making that "RAR" face. i wanna play some more to see everyones intimidating expressions.
+ yangus has an awesome voice.
I will buy this game at the full $50 MSRP on day one. Haven't done that since Half-Life 2.
I am excited.
So, rama. There's an interview in this month's Play magazine. It's really nice. He says the music's "orchestra version" or something. It's worded funny, but i think it means what you want it to. He also mentions wanting to expand the DQ series in the US and wanting to bring over Slime Mori Mori for your favorite system. That's right, the DS! Har har har!
!argh! not the ds....rrrrrrr they should just like...not have ANY dq games on the ds. EVER. but...yeah...now that i'm thinking about it...how are they gonna pull off the "orchestra version?" i didn't mind the synth music at all. it's nice to hear after listening to the arranged soundtrack so much.
y'know, i was thinking how they always do remakes with the new graphics or whatever...and even though they've re-made dragon quest 3 like....2 times already, i'd like to see it in the style of 8. but i guess the next remake on the list is 6. wonder when that's comming?
Just got the demo disc. I'm guessing anything done on the demo disc can't be moved over to the real game when it is released?
nah...you can't even save. pluss the one scenario that you do happens a little after the very begining of the game.
so...uh...oh my god! i just read on 1up that dragon quest 8's comming out a week earlier. so the release date is now set for november 15th.
We'll all be racing karts online by then!!!! I beat the demo, I liked the game but I didn't like that you had to play it for over two hours with no saves to beat it.
That's... That's... THAT'S PAY DAY! WHOOOOOO! XD WEYOOOT!Quote:

What if I buy it for a completely different reason Mister Sassypants?
