Dragon Quest 8

Trodian comes up later Marwan. You know, every infamous monster has a name, the slime you were fighting does not have the same name as the one on the notes. It's a fairly simple concept.

g0zen, for starters get the Lizard (Axoraptor) to the right of Farebury (when you leave through the entrance by the inn) and then by the tunnel leading to Trodain, before you go through it, turn around and go down the pennisula for one of the strongest monsters (Potbelly) you can get untill you beat B rank. Then follow the river in front of Argonia to the left (facing away from Argonia) to find Dumbking, another really strong monster. With this team you can beat the ranks all the way up through C without much trouble.

gosh i dunno how the name thing sliped by, i should know better(duh!), thanks for pointing that out.

am i the only person playing this game from the HD Loader? it makes a world of a difference!

How can it make a world of difference if DQVIII has really short load times?

It takes .5 seconds to load the world map instead of 1 second?

One thing that I haven't mentioned about this game is how the passage of night and day is smoother than the old DQs. In the old ones, when you went in a town, time froze. WHen you used a teleport spell, it was always daytime. I kind of liked the old way better, now it takes longer to get nightfall to come for different conversations in towns or to fight more challenging monsters. You have to wait, or stay at an inn.

Anybody read the new interview with Yuji Hori on 1up.com? I admire the man for sticking to his roots but he pretty much kills hope for a "proper" Chrono sequel and I get the impression he'd rather do old school DQ remakes on cell phone instead of DS for now. :wtf:

no it's actually more than that, i played at a friends place of the CD and felt much slower. entering towns, entering battle, exiting battles, everything seems almost instant. with HD Loader you dont see the black loading screen. i guess im just spoiled now that it's running of the HD, you will need to see how much faster it runs of the HD to know what i mean.

Ok, I fought Dhoulmagus the first time and fucking OWNED him. He never killed anyone and I even took out both his dopplegangers before tackling him. I went in level 32 and had multiheal, because I spent a few hours using the alchemy pot for the best weapons and armor possible, so it was much easier.

Hero: Demon Spear, Spiked Armor, Magic Shield, Mighty Armlet
Yangus: Hell Sythe, Spiked Armor, Dragon Shield, Slime Earrings
Angelo: Cheiron's Bow, Dancer's Mail, Magic Shield, Strength Ring
Jessica (before she left): Dragonskin Whip, Magic Vestmen. I'm working on making a Dragon's Robe for her.

47 hours in the game and im getting my ass kicked bigtime, im gonn have t focus on leveling up, and knowing where the proper skill points should go.

question, im using jessica with the whip and alot of spells, should i add points to the stav? i know it's good for spells, but using it as a weapon sucks. also, would i learn new spells by add point to stave? meaning are their exclusive spells only for the stave?

and last, Hero is at level 30 and im still stuck with the re-inforced boomerang(i cooked it up from the alchemy machine). I have a blade like boomerang i bought early on in the game, but it does less damage than the re-inforced boomerang. can i power up my re-inforced boomerang in the alchemy pot? ....?

WTF??? it costs 870 to lift a curse ofa character? what a rip-off!!! :( i equiped jessica with the devil tail and she got cursed.....doh'

anyways, when cursed, what exactly happens to your character? i mean she still fights and all, and i dont notice HP loss....so what does it do?

you do not have to use a staff to get the spells. put skill points into it. i'm not sure about the boomerang thing...there are only like 4/5 boomerangs in the whole game so maybe you're close to getting another one. and you can't make it stronger in the alchemy pot. as for cursed items....sometimes they keep your character from attacking for a turn or two....but i'm taking this knowledge from older games i've played. don't know if the one you have jess using has a different effect or not.

Yea, I skilled up staves and I kinda regret it. Almost got staves capped. It's nice because it gives a free midheal ability and +100 more mp when equipped with a staff. But if you cast a lot, that 100 extra mp doesn't last long. I think whips are better when xping and boss fights because you can take out groups of enemies faster with a whip for jessica and a boomerang for hero. Whips are good in boss fights because twin lash I think is a very damaging ability for a single target and doesn't use a lot of mp. Boomerang doesn't give any real good abilities when you skill up.

You will find the razor wing boomerang I believe in the bazaar after you help the prince with his hunting ground test, and the next boomerang upgrade after that can be made in the pot with you find in one of the castles later on.

I've been puting points into one weapon for each character and puting the extra you get sometimes when their points are too high for their level into their fifth skill set (humanity ect.) and then using alchemy to make them the best weapon available in that class. They've been destroying.

If you do anything else, you're just waisting your points.

the guide for this game sucks

why does it suck?

no boss strategy (doesn't even tell you when and where they are) and no details at all about what you need to do in towns to advance the story

I mean to me anyway the point of a strategy guide is to help you when you get stuck, crap I can't figure out where this person is I need to find to advance the story I'll check the guide, not with this guide you won't cause they wont tell you, this time you'll check gamefaqs

i like that the guide was set up this way. i dunno. maybe it's just me. it works more like an atlas than anything. i also like the alchemy hints for the area you're in. and they give you the boss' stats at least....the rest you can kinda figure out while your fighting the boss.

dammit i want that "Prayer Ring" to recover MP as i fight, but the fucker in the bazaar wants 9000 golds for it! :cry:

btw, is the highest skill points 82? i think i maxed that out, so im going for others such as "humanity"

also, Yagnus learned "Whistle" but i can't use it, what's up with that? what does it do?

when you level up you'll be able to put more into it.

The max is 100 and if your smart, you'll put 100 into the hero's sword and his courage so you get the best attack in the game.

that does sucks. but then again TNL is always around for help....i know i know it's not the same. :(

Also, the absolute smartest way to play this game is to get a strong monster team and have them fight the begining of every battle when you go through a dungeon. A lot of times they'll win it for you, and if they don't they take a lot of damage you don't have to waste mp healing and they'll at the very least kill a good amount of the enemies and hurt those that are left.

shit i have been neglecting the sword, but im focusing on courage(boomerang is maxed at 82 points)


by the way, i'm still trying to find the last "khalamari kid", morries note says located next to a lady's bandit lair.....they're refering to "RED" right? ...i can't seem to find any khalamari's in that area!

boomerang is worthless. the most powerful weapon for the hero is a sword and his most powerful attack requires him to have 100 in both sword and courage.

EDIT: i need more gold(like 10,000 +) where is the best place to get some cash? should i just keep fighting(harder) monsters to get gold? i found a chest infront of the wizard's house that contains 1500g....it was nice, but i need more.

Go to Raydon tower, to the 8th floor. Take the other ramp up (not the red carpeted one) and you'll find a chest with a prayer ring. :)

Don't even worry about casinos until you open the one in Baccarat. And even then, I only played the 100 token slot machine since the odds of hitting a triple 7 are *much* higher on that machine than any other.

Save the game, blow a few thousand tokens. Reload when you go broke. Once you hit the jackpot, you're set. The odds are greatly stacked in your favor, so you likely won't have to wait very long to start winning big.

Wait untill you open the baccarat casino (in doing so you'll get 600 coins).

Save, then go Bet the max at Bingo (300) and there's a good chance you'll win the 10x or higher; if not reset. When you do hit it go to one of the 10 coin slots and bet max untill you get somewhere between 8-10,000 coins.

When you build up that much go to the 100 coin machine and just keep betting max. The game wants you to win, and the odds are in your favor, you just need a large enough store of coins to take advantage of it. I played the slots for somewhere between 2 and 3 hours endlessly dumping in coins and hit 777 three times and triple bars twice. I aslo hit a bunch of other things that slowly; very slowly, raised my coin total outside of those up to 45,000. Really though, you're just waiting for the 777 and the triple bars to hit, because between what I hit I made over 400,000 coins and I was able to buy four sets of liquid metal armor and the best whip in the game for jessica (so early infact that she is now my most powerful attacker by almost double when comparing special moves).

Again, the game will give you a 777 if you spin enough times, it's "random" but not really since the game gives it to you on purpose if you've spun enough. You have like a 1 in 500 chance of hitting it or something, which means if you bet max it will take you 100 times spinning the slot to hit the 777.

Whistle is key to lvling and earning gold. Instead of walking around randomly and hitting a new fight every 10 steps, just go outside and use whistle and you'll get into a fight right away!

LMA is 50,000 coins at baccarat and Jessicas strongest whip is 200,000 at the same place.

Right now I have Hero's strongest weapon and helmet, Yungus' strongest shield, armor and weapon, Jessica's strongest Weapon, helmet and armor and Angelo's strongest weapon and helmet.

When I finish getting everything I can get before the final dungeon, I'm going to go kick it's ass.

It tells you how many treasures are in an area, not where they are. Like, in a town it will tell you there's x left so you know to keep looking. Finding them is up to you.

BTW, if you're trying to make some items with alchemy and you don't want to go anywhere untill they're done, just put a rubber band around the analog sticks while in a town and hero will run in circles passing the time.

Then you're free to do other shit, like post on TNL about how clever you are.

It only took me 3 hours to get all those things.

Trust me, it's worth the 3 hours. Easy.

Another thing, eventually you'll want nook grass to make an outfit to give to a guy to get an awesome shield.

To get nook grass, go talk to martia's son and lie to him. You'll know what I mean when you do it.

im at bacarrat and they still dont's sell all those things(LMA and whip). i guess they will show up when my characters are at a certain level. Hero is at lvl 31 and the rest are 31, 29,28.....or something like that.

Have you opened the casino? Becuase, they aren't sold at the item shop, they're traded for casion tokens inside the casino, which you open later in the game.

oh so it's kinda like the casino items at pickham then, i gotcha.

anyways, i didnt open the casino yet since i saved before entering the "Dark Ruine" ....which i take it the casino would open up after i finish that.

My party is now at lvl ~40, and I'm just over 60 hours in. I guess I'm closing in on the end of the game because I got the Godbird's soulstone, and I've been flying around for a while collecting items in unexplored, inaccessible places . I just beat Marcello fun times.

I'm not sure if I have the best equipment for the characters yet. I haven't really looked at the lists in the guide yet (which like a previous poster noted, is quite useless). I do have the strongest whip for Jessica, though.
I'm really enjoying this game. It's a nice change from the tension-ridden, apocalyptic scenarios of most j-rpg's, and can't wait for the climax.

For people who want a place to level-up quickly:

Right near Rydon's Tower is a plateau. Of course you'll need to have the soulstone as it's inaccessible otherwise. On the plateau you'll only face slimes, which includes all the metal versions. They appear quite often, and if you're lucky (and they don't run off), you'll come across a long row of King Metal Slimes, and you'll be able to rack up several tens-of-thousand of experience quite easily, and sometimes over 100k.

i just god my ass handed to me by Dhoulmagus at the dark ruine :( i'm 57 hours into the game, with Hero's leve at 33(or so). i think i need to level up some more since while fighting Dhoul' i ran out of MP and couldn't or do anything else. :(

i'll go run around and level up.

btw, there are two treasure chests in "Dark Ruine", in the maze like room with the levers, the 2 chests are located on top, and i cant seem to find the lever that lifts one of the doors up so i could use it as a bridge to reach the chests. :(

See I like old school RPGs and thusly I should be loving this, i want to love this, it's old school and it's gorgeous but I think it may be a bit too old school for me

I know it's a mainstay of the series but having to go back to a church to save, an inn to heal, (even ff1 had cabins, are there any such things in this one I haven't come across any yet but Im still early) and having to go to a church to resurect a dead character, having to go to a church to see how many experience points I need, and the battles, again I know the style of the way they're done are mainstays of the series, but it seems to me something there could have been updated a bit, I don't know I can't say for sure

I love the graphics, I'm liking the storyline, just certain aspects of the game play are more frustrating than fun to me

i agree on the experience points, going to church to check how much exp left to level up is a pain in the ass. but that's such a small complaint considering all the goods in the game :)

regadring ressurection, Angelo has a resurect spell, so need go to church for that(though it's 50% chance with a 50% hp recovery)

I thought I would have a problem with not being able to save, say, right in front of a boss fight; but since you don't get a game over when you lose a fight, you just go back to the last church you saved at with less gold I figured it was a fine system. Then again, I've never died in this game, ever, so I guess I don't really know wether that system is annoying or not.

Anyway, I have all the best items I can get before the final dungeon with the exception of the prize for rank S at the monster arena. When I get that I'm going to the final dungeon. I'm level 40 btw.

Also, the best team in the game for rank S is not the best team in the game for fighting outside the arena. Why? You need a healer for the fighting arena, but all you want out of monsters in real battles are crazy attacks. Once you get two teams, try to make one with the three strongest attackers you can find that aren't the killing machines. I have Skeledoid, Steropes and Talos in my main team. They do about 150 damage a piece each time they attack and Skeledoid attacks twice each round; they stay in for three rounds so against a boss they do about 1,800 damage before they have to run away. For you second team, get all three of the killing machines. There are stronger attacker in the game than the weakest two but all the killing machines attack twice each round, and when you put all three of them together they stay in for four rounds. They do somewhere around 500 points of damage in a round and since they stay in for 4 they do 2,000 overall before they leave the battle field.

Now for the monster arena, you don't want them to be your team. Why? The weakest one has strong enough defenses and a high enough HP to survive 4 rounds against anything a real battle can throw at him; but in the monster arena he can't make it to the third round of group A or S, which means you're boned.

The best team to beat group S? Take a cue from Muries Team and use a healer (I'm using Octurion since he's the best healer in the game by far) a strong attacker (I'm using Skeletoid becuase he's the second strongest attacker in the game but he attacks twice each round making his damage per round about 140 higher than anyone else can hit. Also his attacks put enemies to sleep sometimes) and a metal creature (Hev would be the best but you can't get him untill after you clear the game so go with Metabble instead).

Why this team? Well Metabble will take no damage from almost all the attacks thrown at him, and even when he does it will be very slow and the healer can give it all back. This basically wastes the other teams turns while you beat them down with Skeledoid. It's basically the best team for the job. If you can't do this team though, there's a chance you might beat Rank S with all the Golems, they form together to make Mayiz (or whatever it's called) which has really high attack and defence and can survive all three rounds of rank S without much trouble at all. The problem is Brickman, the weakest Golem, is likely to die before they have a chance to make Mayiz in the last round.

but how often in real life do you carry a dead friend miles and miles through the country side and ressurect them or how often in Real life do you fight little blue slimes or walk around with a green toad man that was once the king of a castle

yeah not that often unless you take acid regularly so drop the it's just like real life BS line because it's a video game, for decades now RPGs have allowed you to bring characters back to life with an item and let you rest in a tent or cabin and restore your health (people do such things in real life too you know, they go out into the woods and put up these magical things called tents and OH MY FUCKING GOD they sleep in them :O :O :O :O )

Yeah I don't have angelo yet or his resurect spell so it's still annoying

I just like I said RPGs got read of these gameplay aspects decades ago, I've always kind of put up with it from the DQ series cause its freaking DQ and it's normally really good, and cause its the whole nostalgia thing, I just think this time around I feel like OK Fuck enough is enough allready lets up date this shit

ehh I've only had a character die twice and only lost my party twice, but it was still a bit of an annoyance to me, though yes in someways its nice how it works, but I would still like to able to save on the world map, not even to have to save in a dungeon or something like that but outside a dungeon or cave or what ever you know what I mean

I just don't have the time I once did for video games, I work on average 6 days a week and about 55 - 60 hours over that time, and 3 - 4 nights a week I'm at the dojo, so I really can normally only squeeze in a sparse few hours here and there for gaming, when I don't have much time for gaming, I freaking hate having to waste 10 minutes making my way out of a dungeon, make my way back to the nearby town go to the church get the resurection done make my way back to the dungeon etc etc

Your main hero learns a spell that will let you jump from town to dungeon instantly really early in the game, assuming you allocate his skill points to the non-weapon one (humanity? courage? can't remember...) He also learns a spell that will let you exit dungeons whenever you want.

+ the spells only cost like....1mp each.

Do any of you guys use cheese during the fights? I never know when to use it because I don't want to waste some good cheese.

Ever notice how the alchemy pot takes forever for the really good or the three-item mixes?

Another thing that irks me as I have been playing this game - since when did a monster that was called by another monster get a combat turn during the same round it got called? They never allowed that in the old DQs. When a monster got called by another monster, it had to wait till the next combat turn to attack. those blue bells in the snow area are cheap with their chain calls for help and their death song

I could kill this game right now.

I got to the final round of Rank S with full health on all my monsters becuase my healer cast healing spells on them before they defeated the final monster of the second round. Then they all attack the metal bubble over and over again on the other team and don't go for the one monster that's hurting them. That's right, Morrie has one monster that really causes damage (the healslime either does like 12 damage or nothing at all when it's turn comes, and the metal bubble does like 40 damage) but they wasted hteir time on the metal bubble for over 10 turns and let the ONE FUCKING MONSTER on the other team that could hurt them go completely unchallenged and I lost. If they would have fought him first, and beat him, it wouldn't have mattered how long it took to finally take out the metal bubble, becuase NOTHING WOULD BE FUCKING HURTING MY TEAM.

Why the fuck can't I decide who they attack? If I could, this would be so fucking easy.

i really hope my ps2 comes tomorrow. im "creating" this game as i type this.

Upon further inspection FUCK RANK S unless you're over level 45 and you've beaten the game and you have Hev on your team.

I just beat the game. Cool final battle, although a little drawn out, and nice long ending. My party is at level 44 at the end and gametime is exactly 72 hours. Just a heads up before you start the final battle:

Each character gets an item, and when the final battle starts, each character has to use the item 7 times before you can even damage him. All the characters must use the item in the same round for it to count, and you must do this 7 times (not consecutively). The game only vaguely mentions this, so I thought I'd mention it here. Basically you can't even hurt him for AT LEAST 7 rounds, so you'll have to endure his attacks. Fortunately during my battle he wasted a lot of his turns laughing, so it wasn't too bad.

As for the Rank S, the prize for winning is a Dragon Robe . While that's an excellent item (especially if you somehow manage to beat Rank S earlier in the game), by the time you'll have monsters powerful enough to take on Rank S, you'll have the ingredients to make a superior item through alchemy anyway.

You *can* make more, but it'll come down to personal choice. 2 of the ingredients, the Slime Crown and the liquid metal armor are renewable and can be aquired again. The Orichalcum (or however you spell it) is another matter. I've found 5 so far in my game. I'm not sure if those are renewable, but I severely doubt it. So, you can make more than one of these, IF you're willing to forgo the other equally valuable items you can make. Personally, I only made one myself. :)

There are five, but it's really hard to get a third slime crown. Since I made a sheild, armor and two weapons with my orichalcum and the other ingredients I can't really make anything else.

Unless I get really lucky and a Slime King drops his crown.

Also, I don't think we need to use spoilers when having simple talks about alchemy. Just as long as we refrain from talking about where we get the ingredients when they aren't from everyday enemies.

"EVAC"(exit dungeon) and "ZOOM"(teleport to different locations) are some of the coolests spells, and they're dirt cheap :)

oh and i beat Dhoul' on the second try in the Dark Ruine.....i just reached "Rydon"

Opaque, i'm at "Rydon", how many more hours before the game ends? i have a total playtime 62 hours and my back is freakin' sore from playing this game(as i type this post). I mena im not bored of it, i love it, i just want to know how much longer to have to go till i reach the end.

I found "Hell Scythe".....but shit it's expansive....gotta opne up the casino and rack-up on gold asap.

You feed the cheese to the Hero's hamster thing, and he'll cast a spell. Different spells for different cheeses.

As for how far you are along... I'd say you're about 60~70% done. You still have quite a bit to do, but you're passed the half-way point.

gosh i need to work on my "wisdom" my spells do slightly more damage than my attacks! :(

btw, what determines who attacks first? agility?

I'm going though this game slowly (an hour or two a day - it's too boring play battles for that many hours)as I'm trying to save up for the best armor. I'm at the snow town Alkukst? Lvl 40 for yangus and hero, and about 67 hours into it. Just got the final key

Wow, you only need to be like, level 31 at the snow town (which is called Orkutsk). Why are you spending so much time leveling?

Infact, I have to ask, what the fuck were you fighting that allowed you to get to level 40 that early? Becuase, that's like, 120 fights for a level to get from 39 to 40 at the average exp things in that area drop.

I've insisted that I have to have the best possible armor and weapon at each town, so I've spent alot of time fighting to earn gold. I've logged about 70 hours so far.

Little did I know that...
You just have to go to the dungeon below Ascanthia, spam whistle, and fight goodybags, which drop 106 gold each. They don't always pop up, but the least you get from other mobs is 50. There's no load times between fights like there is in the world map, and one throw of the boomerang at lvl 30s wipes out all the mobs. I earned 27,000 gold in a hour without breaking a sweat

I also hit 777 on the 100 coin slots! Weeeee!

I just beat the game for the first time.

Now I'm going to load up the clear game save and get to work on building a stronger monster team and beating Rank S. Then it's off to the hidden dungeon.

Woot!

So now I'm going through the hidden dungeon so I can get to a hidden town, so I can fight some dragon over and over again to get items from his list:

- Strengthen Renkingama (Alchemy Pot)
- Receive Awesome Team Monster
- Receive Dragon God's Sword
- Receive Dragon God's Armor
- Receive Dragon God's Shield
- Receive Dragon God's Helmet

and apparantly those are the strongest items in the game for here except for the sword. The strongest sword for Hero is made by puting the Dragon God's Sword and the Liquid Metal Sword in the Alchemy Pot together. Also, I guess when Hero wears all the Dragon God Armor pieces it changes his appearance. I'm all about both that and finding out who he really is.

I also like that if I get him these Items I can give his current Armor, Shield and Helmet to someone else.

your question about the armor was answered already. it's buried here somewhere with pics. looks pretty cool.

so if you beat it why get better items? does it affect the ending at all?

Nice job! You can get a better ending if you beat the hidden dungeon then go and fight the last boss over again.

I am wondering why you're having such troubles with Rank S (I thought it roughly the same as Rank A in difficulty). I beat Rank S on my first try about 80% of the way through the main quest (I think I was at Lv35 or something). I didn't think it was very hard, but maybe I got lucky? I used the man-octopus healer/fighter, the blue giant cyclops, and the stone man. Piece 'o cake.

I think I'm just having bad luck with it.

Also I can't decide if I want to go see the good ending right now or wait untill after I get all the Dragon gear so I can see Hero all pimped out. I'm going to do both, but I don't know in which order

Also, someone said they got to level 99... how the shit did you do that?

Well I beat two of the Dragon Lords forms and got the Sword and the Armor. I then made the Dragon King Sword and gave my Metal King Armor to Yungus after equiping Hero with his new armor. I was going to keep fighting the Dragon Lords third and fourth form so I could see Hero in his full get up, but the third form kicked my ass.

So I went and beat up Rapthorne again and now I'm watching the good ending. Tomorrow I'm going to go level up a bit more and finish off the third and fourth forms of Dragon Lord. If Hero looks cool enough in his new outfit, I might beat the game a third time to see the good ending with him all spiffy. If he doesn't look that cool, I still might do it, because Rapthorne is a pussy anyway.

oh, and anyone who's beat the game might be able to answer me a question that might make my life easier:

if I do another save after beating the game can I go and do the Dragon Lord again from scratch, even though I have two of his items? If so, I'm going to do that so I can just beat up his first two easy forms again instead of fucking with these harder ones..

man do i such at alchemy. at first it was all cool and stuff, but then when the alchemy pot got upgraded, i started to suck at it big time, it just feels so overwhelming with all the items you can mix into it....i get lost in it so easily :(

what are the 2 dragon items i'm supposed to mix with the snakeskin whip? i have a dragon scale and dragon manure(forgot it's name). I mixed all 3 items and the pots spat it out! :(

If anyone wants the game to become easier, make the Timbrel of Tension by mixing sun crown, tough guy tattoo, and beast hide . This is almost a gamebreaking item.

It's the second best helmet in the game made only through alchemy.
