Fuck yeah... I used that Tension thingy and kicked both the silver and the gold dragons asses easy. BTW, you don't need the shield to change Hero's appearance, only the Armor and the Helmet. So if you want to see him in his crazy dragon gear quick, save the sheild for last.
Now I'm going to beat the game for the third and final time to see how the ending looks now. Then I'm done with this game.

After doing everything there is to do except like three boss fights and the S Rank of Monster arena I hit just under 80 hours.
Opaque, what monsters are you using for the arena? I have Tylos, Octurion, and Skeledoid; and I breezed through rank A. How much harder is the S rank? I haven't tried it yet, but it sounds a lot harder than G-A.
I was in Orkutsk before I accessed the Monster Arena. When I couldn't go in, I thought I had to come at a different time of day, or that an event would occur later on. I didn't even see the ramp on the side. Now I have to hunt down some strong monsters.
I'm also apparently underleveled and taking too long. About 74 hours in, My characters are 34, 33, 33 and 31, just before Empyrea. I spent a lot of time doing alchemy, and I'd run into a wall while I changed the channel, until the commercial. Aside from the first time I fought dhoulmagus, I haven't had any troubles.
Yeah, I used that team for Rank A and destroyed it.
Rank S is a totally different monster though. You're up against teams with smart healing and in the final match a metal monster that you're team will waist many, many turns trying to kill before they finally do. If you don't have a smart healer, and someone to take a beating, you're going to get destroyed. Octurion is a strong healer, but he doesn't heal often enough (or in my case, almost at all) so you'll want to get someone different.
If I pop the game back in to take down Rank S and suceed, I'll tell you guys who I used. I most likely won't though, because I'm not even going to bother untill I get Hev and I'd have to beat another form of the Dragon Lord to do that..
Opaque, i'm at Empyre at level 34,34,32,31(or something like that). for some reason when i battle monsters in that area, i'm still damage in the 40 and 60 range...and that one eyed orc or whatever he is gives me 100 points in damage! WTF? am i not equiped well enough? i bought the bandit mail for Yagnus and still he gets alot of damage(his defence went from 139 ->150. Also, last i checked the Casino at baccarat is still closed....i need some cash dammit! :(
baccarat won't get you money, it only gets you casino tokens. It won't matter though, because the armor you get there will be the best you'll ever need, and you can even make one set of a better armor from it with alchemy.
What you need to start doing is casting kabuff three times when you fight bosses and other strong fights. It'll make your defense really high, and against many monsters, make them cause little to no damage with physical attacks. Also, build a good monster team and let them do the fighting for you. When you get Hero's courage up enough, he can call them wtih 5mp, and in many cases they'll win the whole battle for you. It's a lot better than spending a bunch of mp healing everyone after fights.

you have to get high enough in the ranking that morrie grants the ability to you.
Seriously, you need to do it. It's really good damage on bosses and you don't have to worry about healing the damage you're monsters take.

It can work 3 times before it stops, but then again I was kinda late in the game when I started using it, so maybe you have to pass a level barrier or something.
When I fight bosses, the first round I would have Hero use tension, Yungus would us Kabuff, Jessica would cast accelerate and Angelo would use Kabuff. The second round Hero would use tension, Yungus would use tension, jessica would cast oomph and Aneglo would either heal or use multi arrow. Third round Hero would use tension, Yungus would use tension and Jessica would cast oomph on herself and Angelo would again heal or use multi arrow.
From that point on, everytime Jessica, Yungus or Hero hit 50 they would attack (You should really have Jessica equiped with a Whip and ahve her use Twin Dragon Lash, towards the end of the game I could cause 3,000 pts of damage with it this way, more than twice the damage I could cause with any other character through any other meanas) and Angelo would just keep healing or using multi arrow. And yeah, it's worth using Tension in every boss fight, it took me a while to realise it, but at 50 you can do somewhere between 5 and 6 times the damage your attacks normally do, but it only takes 4 turns to pull it off. Really a good timesaver and a great way to conserve your MP.
especially after you get the tension item thingy whose name I forget, becuase you can get to 50 in 2 turns for Jessica and Hero if you have Yungus use it. Meaning in essence you deal damage in 1/3 the time you would if you never used tension.
Once you get the ability to have two monster teams, you can send them both into battle for you. That's always the first thing I do with boss battles. Even cooler is that they completely heal between battles (providing they don't die), so you can use them in those really tough dungeon battles without having to worry about them dying before the boss.
Opaque with most bosses, they do this thing where they remove your tension and it's really annoying.
what tension thing you were refering to? and which character gets it?
man how do you do damage with 3000 points? i like jessican double whip ability, i use it all the time, but the most o have gotten out of it(without tension of Oomph) is 120-130 points(60-60 or 65-65)....and my characters are at level 37,37,34,33. :(
oh and im at the entrace of the Godbird cave(the place where the bird carries you to)
When jessica hit 50 tension for me in the final battle, and she was level 42, and she had the best whip, and she had oomph on her she did that 3,000 damage.

No it's an item, it's like a tamborine and it raises everyone's tension one level. So if Hero and Jessica raise their tension, and yungus uses the item, after one round Hero and Jessica are at 20 tesnion and Yungus and Angelo are at 5. It's awesome and quick.

No, you can use it over and over.
You make it by puting a Sun Crown (the second best helmet in the game) with a tough guy tattoo and a magical beast hide. It's only after you have the ability to make the second Sun Crown that you should bother making the Tamborine, because only Jessica can equip the Sun Crown, but you really, really want to put her in the first one.
It's the Timbrel of Tension. It allows you to increase the tension of your entire party all at once. I posted the recipe for this earlier in the thread. Ignored once again. :(Quote:

I also recommend creating a "sages stone" once you get the ingredients by mixing a Gold Nugget, Orichalcum, and Yggdrasil Dew. This gives you a free, unlimited use Multiheal when used as an item. Healing spells are also affected by tension, btw.

also, a while back i got the key to open all those cells with treasure chests, i did some back tracking to the ones i remember. but can someone point out the rest of the cells i can open? i did ordain, pickham and some other place.
and last, i came across a tiny island which has a red door, i opened it, then i came across another cell like door, opene that too, then i found a cage with a doog, but it wont open. what is that place?
where do i get Orichalcum from? i have the rest of the ingredients.

You get one as a prize for turning in medals to Princess Minnie (forgot how many, though). There's also one in a chest in the God Bird's cave..forgot if it was light world or dark world, though. There's also 3 in the final dungeon which you can't miss.Quote:

Well, I'm finally close to the end. I think there's a dis-proportionate # of items to make in the alchemy pot at the end. All the best stuff is made with the pot. Some things take alot longer than others. My timbre of tension is taking much longer than, say medicine did.
im very impatient with this game and keep getting my ass handed to me in the waterfall dungeon.

i finally got to lv 6 and the bastard got a lucky hit in before my healing herb. killed my main character in the 3rd round of combat. grrrr.....

I get my ass handed to me by every boss. It is kinda frustrating but I enjoy the challenge. I played this game for 7 hours straight yesterday. It's awesome. We need to have a post your stats thread for this game. I've only played 20 hours so far cause I've been super busy this month, but so far no deaths and lots of kills. Plus I've walked 80+ miles.
I walked like 400 miles or something.
Finished! 88 hours at level 43.
I fucking owned Raphthorne. Yangus handled the Timbrel of Tension while both the hero and Angelo had Sage Stones and multiheal. Jessica cast Insulate and Oomph! in between double slashes, which allowed me to win without anyone dying or ever having to use any other healing items (did anyone use anything other than healing magic and Sage Stones?). When tension was at 20 or maxed out, the hero used Gigaslash (about 700 dmg), Yangus used big banga (1000+ dmg) and Jessica's double slash did almost 1000 dmg each hit. Angelo only cured the whole time and cast Kabuff.
The ending rocks too.
You should have been able to milk closer to 3000 damage out of Jessica's double slash.
Did you have the whip from Baccaratt?

Yeah, but he kept taking away my status effects, and I just had her using insulate and oomph to keep from having anyone get critical. Yangus's big banga and the gigaslash did more than enough damage. Thing is, Raphthorne was a real weak last boss IMO, and never caused more than 100 dmg with anything but his arm slash.Quote:

This is what you should have one each character:
Hero: Liquid Metal Sword, Metal King Armor, Metal King Shield, Metal King Helm and a Ruby of Protection.
Yungus: Megaton Hammer, Liquid Metal Armor, Big Boss Shield, Great Helm and a Ruby of Protection.
Jessica: Gringham Whip, Divine Buster, Saintless Shield, Sun Crown and a Ruby of Protection.
Angelo: Odin's Bow, Liquid Metal Armor, Silver Shield, Phantom Mask and a Ruby of Protection.
This is literally the best equipment possible untill after you beat the game and do the bonus shit. It's not the most balanced, becuase you could put some of teh Metal King shit on other people, but it's important to have Hero with the highest defense possible.
If you need to know how to get any of that, just ask.
The Conquerer's Axe is better for Yangus, and it's free. It's on the hills North of Rayden Tower. Lots of metal slimes there too.
The Megaton Hammer has 5 more base attack points and it Increases the odds of a critical hit.
Also, if marwan has been puting skill points into hammers like I suggested the Megaton will add 133 attack instead of the Conquerer's Axe 103.
Seriously, Opaque is a god at this game. I didn't even need to buy the guide with this awesome thread!

The orbs are found where each of the sage heirs died.
so far im stacking yangus with hammer and humility, the hero with swords and courage and jessica with sex appeal and wands. should i vary from this? (at lv 12 currently)
also i just got the alchemy pot and the king keeps telling me to find more recepies in the port. all ive found is two bookshelves in the inn one of which contains the herb recipe. where the hell else am i supposed to find them?

Yep. I fit into this camp too. This game just keeps on giving. Im 20 hours in, and with just about every RPG for me - im done with it and have moved on. Not with DQ8. Great pacing, solid dialouge, and perfect sense of exploration and discovery - when most others turned into a snooze fest by now. sometimes the pause from the end of battle to the world map seem longer than they should be. the characters aren't even celebrating, they just sit there.

I started playing this game, and I just can't get into it :/ the beginning sucks.
the beginning is really difficult for the unpatient. after that first dungeon it really feels more balanced. i almost gave up myself.
I don't think it ever gets more balanced. I think you just get into the groove of it, but the game doesn't really ease you into things like most modern RPGs do.

You can't walk to Godbird's Eyrie right? You have to fly and land in front of it; that's because it's on a very large raised area. Land on that raised area but go west instead of into the Eyrie.
Also, cheese is always a one time thing becuase munchie eats it.
And I beat Rapthorne the first time when all my guys were level 40 and I didn't use tension at all. It was only when I started doing the bonus stuff that I used tension; then when I beat Rapthorne again for the good ending I destroyed him.
how do you get the good ending? if you finish the extra dungeon?
also are you refering to light or dark godbird eyrie?
EDIT: i didint know that that dungeon(the one the bird takes you too) is called godbird eyrie.
In the light world.
If you do the extra dungeon up to a certain point you find out who Hero really is and you'll get the good ending if you beat Rapthorne again.

btw i hit 104 hours. i have been taking my time with this game, plus i'm not so grea with RPGs in general, but shit this game got me hooked from begining to end!!!
In the guide it says that Hero learns a skill called "Dragon Soul" at level 65. I looked on every FAQ on GameFAQs and I haven't seen any mention of it. I'm inclined to believe that the guide authors either just made it up, or have some bad information. Does anyone know if this skill exists?
eeek level 65? that would take forever.....i'm sure Opaque would know! :P
EDIT: the amount of time it's taking to cook up powerfull items in the alchemy pot is fucking rediculous!!! i'm making a sun crown and it's well over an hour already and shit isnt done yet. same happend with a buncha other items! :curse:
I finally finished it :) what a game, hands down the best experience i have ever had in an RPG! ...off to finish the bonus dungeon. and btw, i'm at 112 hours lol, sorry im just not as good as you guys when it comes to RPGs :)
Beat it after 93 hours. Most characters were level 43.
I regret not lvling sword for hero, since I didn't really have any strong attacks to use against Rhapthorne. I had yangus on healing duty most of the time using the sage's stone, Jessica doing buffs and occassional dragon lash, and angelo healing when necessary or multihit bow attack.
I don't think I'll play anymore. I'm kind of burnt out by this game. It was fun for the first 30 hours, it kind of lost it in the middle, and then it picked up toward the end when you got lemia and the ability to fly. I had more fun with DQ VII, but that was largely because I didn't play any DQ games since IV on the NES. Well, let's hope they bring 5-6 on the GBA or DS. We won't be seeing another DQ game until the end of the PS3's life with the way the DQ timetable has been.

i fucking lost to that big dragovian dragon after collecting tons of shit and crap, im so furious!!!!! ....and WTF timbrel of tension took 6 hours to cook in the alchemy pot! lol
i'm gettnig big damage from that dragovian place, i hope i can finish it today to see the better ending and end this game once and for all.
