Super Princess Peach

I still don't understand the decision to make a Peach game. Is this another part of the damned getting non-gamers to buy a DS strategy that spawned Nintendogs? If so, Nintendo can fuck off. This should have been a Yoshi game or a Mario game. Nintendo doesn't have the bandwidth to produce enough first party games to piss away energy on Peach. I hope this thing sells like shit. 2006 is the year Nintendo finally gets its ass kicked in the portable market, and with decisions like this one, they earned it.

I'm not surprised by that IGN review, but, from the other impressions I read on the game, I don't think it should be taken too seriously. It annoys me how IGN assumes the game is aimed mostly at young girls just becuase the game is easy and stars a female character.

We're getting a new 2d Mario this year and we had an excellent DK platformer last year. I'm sure we haven't seen the last of Yoshi platformers either. I would prefer Nintendo came up with a completely original new franchise but if they're sticking with the Mario universe I don't see what's the problem with using Peach as the main character for once. I wouldn't dismiss a great game based on the look of the sprite you control.

No, Im not going to and I dont need to. The shitty scores and reviews this game are getting tells all - yes they say its "good fun but easy" but thats with the Mario handicap. If it had Dora the Explorer or something instead of Peach it would be getting 5s and 6s. It might be a decent game but its certainly not great. It is, like all of Nintendo's games nowadays, substandard + fanservice.

Easy. The DS was able to get a bunch of quality games out the door in late 2005 for two reasons: 1. The hardware is a little bit older than the PSP. 2. The hardware is less powerful and easier to develop for than the PSP. What was a boon for the DS in late 2005 will be a boon for the PSP in 2006. Go look at the announced games for each for this year. The PSP stomps all over it. Could that change at E3? Sure, but I predict it will get more lopsided. The fact that all you could name were first party games is evidence of it.

I bet if it had Dora in it they would be saying its the best licensed platformer you can get on GameBoy. Because Dora is going to get compared to other Nickelodeon/Cartoon based games, and this is surely 10 times better than any other licencend product on the DS. Nintendo games get compared to Nintendo games.

I actually agree with this. Mario Sunshine was a better game than its scores indicate, because everyone wanted Mario 64 2. If Nintendo would actually figure out what people want instead of trying to tell them, sales and review scores would go up though.

Harris is a good reviewer, his opinion as usual sounds very straightforward: he says it's a fun game but it babies the player with endless life replenishment, tells u where the Toads are (OTOH, if they'd only done this with Sunshine's blue coins, yowza...), easy bosses, ect.

I hope this doesn't bode badly for New SMB. I could see that easily being ruined simply by giving the player non stop opportunities to get the Bonk 3...i mean giant Mario power up. But on system politics, it is a wise move. Peach will make bank just like Nintendogs did and it is over for PSP this gen. It comes in at a decent second to DS thanks to Sony's arrogance and Kaz Hirai dropping the ball. End of story.

Yes and this is the portable market we are discussing which I shouldn't have to tell you is a very different beast than the home front. The very fact that the PSP is a spendy portable PS2 is precisely why it is behind.

Keep in mind even with the PSP's crappy lineup, and it truly has been atrocious for about 9 months, it still has 40-45% of the market in Japan and over 50% here. What do you think may happen once good games start coming down the pike?

Dylan I would'nt get too cocky, PSPs line up this year so far destroys their last year line up, I don't see why you can't imagine it getting better. And there still needs to be a lot more announced for the DS, it does have some juggernauts, but those are the only games announced.

Whatever. Home market does not equal the portable market. Look at the PSP lineup, and you'll see the majority of ports.

Regardless, I'm not a handheld fan anyways. I'd rather all these games come to the home consoles so that I can play them on my 32" screen. At least with the PSP, most of these games can come over.

I honestly don't care which company makes more money. I like my DS games, though.

No doubt about this. One of the reasons I hope the PSP succeeds is because it's at least closer to the console experience. In a perfect world, they'd both croak and a portable PS2 would be born so that companies would not have to make separate handheld games and waste resources that should be used for consoles.

It offers something you don't want elsewhere. The only thing the touchscreen does well is imitate a mouse for strategy games, and I don't see Blizzard salivating to get the goods one on the DS.

Nothing has changed with DS v. PSP. The better gaming experience, in the minds of the wide-ranging handheld market, is with the DS. None of us may play Nintendogs, but the DS lineup is exactly what the mainstream gamers want. It would be a different story if the PSP wasn't so damn expensive, but it is and I don't see that changing any time soon.

Don't get me wrong. I like the concept of the DS. It's just that there really isn't anything that really shows what the touchscreen was put there for. The games are fine, but they have yet to really show why a touch screen or dual screens were needed.

For the PSP, though, I don't like the concept. Here's a system that is supposed to offer the home experience on the go, yet they cripple the system by only having one analog nub. What's the point? Then, they followup with more UMD movies than games, and these movies are at a higher cost than the DVD release even while containing less in terms of special features.

Sorry, mate. It is totally not what the mainstreamers want. Mainstream want games like GTA, Madden, Metal Gear, 50 Cent, NBA Live, and Midnight Club.

DS is trying to get non-gamers, gaming. They want to expand the market and in turn hope that these "new" gamers turn to the Revolution if they are satisfied with the DS library.

I disagree. Kirby CC, Yoshi TnG and Meteos are three random examples which show the touch screen is a good idea and can even reinvigorate old genres (platform, arcade scoring games and puzzlers). And no, I don't think playing Kirby, Meteos or especially Yoshi with a mouse would be anywhere near as comfy let alone as precise as the stylus. :sweat:

Wait, Kirby reinvigorated the platform genre? That game is the one DS purchase I regret. Thankfully I didn't buy Yoshi TNG.

Well IMHO it definitely reinvigorated the Kirby series itself which is no small feat. I didn't even buy Kirby Mirror for the GBA, I was kinda bored with the series before Cursed Canvas. And Yoshi TnG is a fun game, short but it still has a lot of replay value. I just love how open ended the levels are.

Not useful for 3D platformers, better than dual analog for FPS after a short period of adjustment (it essentially functions the same as a mouse), better than a d-pad for strategy games and certain puzzle games, worse for racers, could be well implemented in sports games but it hasn't happened yet, etc.

It's about as useful as a mouse, and can be used for quirky little games like Trauma Center and such. I don't think it would ever serve a purpose on consoles or PCs that can have multiple controllers, but on a portable, self-contained console it's a good, multi-purpose tool.

Fair enough, because I haven't tried Kirby or Yoshi TnG yet. I'll have to look into these two then.

Meteos, on the other hand, I just cannot play with the stylus. At all. I can never get the stylus point onto the block I want it to be on, so I give up. Seems my hand-eye coordination seems to be shot. :lol:

That would be a shame if I knew anyone locally with a DS, which I don't. My sister got one for Christmas, and a high school buddy of mine has one. They live 11 and 13 hours away respectively.

I'm still a little unsure about whether or not I'll like this game, but that IGN review was seriously crap.

Breaking news: the Gamespot review is also, predictably, crap.

At least it had a video to watch while the dude sputtered out the words "kinda, sorta, pretty much pretty such and such blah blah kiddy" for five minutes. The game LOOKS awesome. I love the graphics, they're simple but they look above GBA quality to me, and like there was some effort put into it. The music sounds good too. And Peach's run animation is great. And the umbrella is cool.

The DS was able to get a bunch of quality games out the door in late 2005 for two reasons: 1. The hardware is a little bit older than the PSP. 2. The hardware is less powerful and easier to develop for than the PSP. What was a boon for the DS in late 2005 will be a boon for the PSP in 2006.

The PSP in 2006 is going to have a second screen and a touchscreen for truly unique games, development costs even lower than that of a GBA game, a legion of mascots that sell games all by themselves, and a userbase full of people that don't care what a PSP game's graphics look like? If so then yes, what was a boon for DS is now a boon for PSP.

The reality of the situation is that PSP users want gorgeous and unique PS2 games with low load times that cost $40 or less, which cost hundreds of times as much to develop as a unique 2d DS game that will sell far more copies.

All three EGM reviews praised Super Princess Peach for different reasons. The only resounding "negative" is that it's an easy game. That's not really an entirely bad thing to me, and if it's a well-crafted game, it'll be worth playing regardless of how hard it is to complete. You might even be able to view the EGM reviews on 1UP.

Three fantastic online games in three months is a fine pace. The partnership with McDonalds and lack of any user fees shows a lot more good faith than Sony ever has. People also like Xbox Live (which is what I was comparing Sony to in the first place, not Nintendo) and get annoyed when Sony decides to blatantly rip it off 3 years too late.

The PSP was predicted by everybody to have 99.99% of the market share between DS and PSP worldwide. Anything less than that is shameful for Sony.

It's one thing to get creamed by Gameboy, but for Sony to get creamed by a non-Gameboy handheld like DS says something.

BTW, getting Peach today. It looks like a combo between SMW 1 & 2, how can you not? Nintendo should have included two difficulty settings. Make the last set of levels inaccessible to those on the normal setting, and a "good ending" available on the hard setting. Oh well.

You're comparing apples and oranges here. The PSP can respectfully do 3D. It's hard to blame Sony for taking advantage of their systems specs. Let's instead look at the console market, where both consoles have similar capabilities. Where are Nintendo's 2D games? Has Nintendo bought into the opinion that 2D only works on portables? If so, they're not doing 2D fans any favors. At least the PS2 has a ton of great 2D games, no matter who makes them.

Nintendo invented the d-pad. Sega invented the real and only good one. Sony offers accessories for their customers who are interested in them. I have zero use for a multitap, so if that choice made the PS2 $5 cheaper for me, then I like the decision.

I have casual friends, (3 males and 1 female) who own only a DS. I have casual friends, (2 male and 1 females) who own only a PSP. The only reason I've been specifying their gender is because people many generally feel that DS is more "female friendly", and PSP is more male oriented. To an extent, their right. I'm just sick of people assuming that I own DS because I'm not an "XY".

I just played through the first couple sections and it seems really cool. It is on the very easy side so far, but it's still got that Nintendo charm. If it keeps up at this pace it should turn out to be a very good game.
