I didn't even see this shit my first year of college. I commuted, so I didn't partake in campus life. But after I moved into the dorm, I had some serious culture shock. There is a group of black guys, something like 15 or 20 of them (prob more) that are some of the meanest bastards I've ever met.
They openly stare, sneer and talk shit about you for just being there. I've had them breath down my neck and call me racial slurs just for taking out my garbage. They do this shit all over campus, tormenting and belittling anyone that they come across. They hate most white people (they love white women) and belittle and intimidate other black kids that dress nice and try hard in their classes. They are shitty shitty people.
Some of the kids that these guys treat like this don't react as well to it as I have. I know that it is just those guys and it doesn't say anything about other people. However a few of the more sheltered kids who live in mostly white towns are letting these assholes shape their initial opinion of poor black people.
But like you ask, most Mississippi kids are not racist. Southern white kids like the black kids just as much as they do anyone else. They love rap music, and all that other “urban” stuff that mtv says is “black” these days. In another thirty years the average white Mississippian won’t be anymore racist than a white person anywhere else.
