Jury Duty

Jury Duty is aggravating. My case was obviously guilty but these assholes wanted to talk it out for SIX HOURS. You get exposed to so much faulty logic and shitty thinking on the part of other jurors, and I feel like someone always tries to be a Henry Fonda superhero. One woman cried when the guilty verdict was read. I was just stoked to get out of there.

Not everywhere.

In a specific state in New England, since they send the notices regular mail, and have no way to prove you actually recieved anything, they can't do shit other than put a bunch of threats they legally cannot persue on the notices.

I was called for jury duty in 2002. I was never selected and spent the entire time playing Advance Wars on my GBA while everyone else waited bored out of their minds. Good times.

May as well talk about my trial now.

As I said before I got called twice in a very short amount of time. State I missed out on, but Federal I got on the jury.

It was awful. A case about police abuse of power. Not like some crack dealer, but a mother of two and shit. Trial took us about a week and half, and we deliberated about two days.

I wish it was something cut and dry I could have just slapped a guilty or not guilty vote on. But this shit was complicated as fuck, involving more than one officer, and spanning several incidents.

In the end, two of the cops were guilty, and one wasn't as he was off-duty at the time of his incident and there was substantial evidence it wasn't him but another off-duty cop, the woman's lawyer simply accused this guy out of spite. The other incidents though, were caught on tape one audio and one video, and really as normal people, their actions bothered the shit out of all of us. Even the elderly woman whose son was a police officer. Though I will admit the women herself was not exactly a stellar human being either.

In the end we awarded her punitive damages of about $200,000. Far short of the ridiculous sum she was asking, but still justified for shit the cops did to her.

I would hate civil trial jury duty. Yuck.

Just for clarification, guilty or not guilty is the verdict in criminal cases. In civil cases, it's liable or not liable.

They let me go after a few hours yesterday as they didn't need anyone anymore.

All in all it wasn't that bad, but I'm glad I didn't get selected for trial. It was still annoying going to a part of town I have NO interest in for a process I have NO interst in.
