It's not like there's even a shortage of "blue sky games". They generally aren't the most popular but there are still a lot of them being made.

I think it was probably more of a reaction to the rift in popularity between games like GTA and um.."nicer" games. A lot of my favorite games don't have a blue sky for their duration, but I still kind of agree with the basic principal behind it.
I liked the blue sky in BoF:Dragon Quarter. Such nice contrast to the rest of the game.
I loved the blue sky in OutRun and OutRun 2 turning into different colors. Beyond that, I've rarely taken note of sky colors in a game.
