Thanks.
There really wasn't anything wrong with combat in KOTOR. It was turned based and very shallow, but it got the job done. Jade Empire's combat was really more a disappointment than anything. I expected fast, fluid martial arts action and what I got was stilted, awkward movements with a rock, paper, scissors fight mechanic.
Still, as long as the combat in Mass Effect is tolerable I'm not going to base my purchasing decision on it. Not when it looks so fucking good and has the possibility of being a great space opera RPG without all the fan service baggage of the Star Wars license.
I never really thought of combat as being the vehicle of entertainment in an RPG. It certainly wasn't in Torment, Fallout, Final Fantasy games, etc.
EDIT: Even in the Elder Scrolls games the combat was nothing to rave about. I'm not saying that we shouldn't wish for better combat in RPGs, but let's not pretend that Bioware is missing some mark in terms of a level of quality for that mechanic in the genre.
I'm curious, what would you change without turning it into an ARPG? It doesn't seem very flawed to me. Your guys would do as they're commanded to and you had to keep alert as to what to do so it wasn't mindless like most JRPGs are. If they made it completely turn-based, it would probably be less exciting.
I am really fuckin excited about this game. I hate to admit it, but I couldn't stand to play KOTOR, and I never bothered with 2. The combat just runied the game for me after playing games like Fable and Jade Empire. I will also admit that I never really gave them a chance. I am very happy to see that they are using real time combat in this. BTW, those pics are amazing. I can see myself just spending hours running around random planets. I hope there is someway to take screenshots of cool places built into the game.
I hope I have a fresh cumrag ready on November 20. Blv.
I love how im so excited about this game. And my xbox doesnt have a video signal anymore. All i see is a black screen with squigly linees....Im so happy.
Shouldn't everything in a game be there to enrich the experience? It seems like in too many RPGs it's just there because it has to be, and there's no thought or love put into it. Including those other examples you mentioned.
Combat in RPGs shouldn't be a minor chore I put up with in order to enjoy the rest of the game. If it's turn based it should challenge my intellect, if it's real-time it should challenge my reflexes, and either way it should be a rewarding experience.
