OKAY!
Side quests are called assignments. There are a lot of ways to get them; you can pick up distress signals while exploring the galaxy, command can radio in developing events that they need you to check out, talking to people at the major city, etc. Some of them are really cool.
Here's a short summary of one, spoiler tagged in case you want NOTHING spoiled, but it has absolutely nothing to do with the main plot:
We came across a frigate, floating through space, so we board it. It seems empty. We decrypt a few of the computers - and eventually piece together that a guy was dying - brain dead - and his lover was going a tad insane. When we finally make it to the ship's control room and play back the captains log, we learn that the lover has killed everyone on the ship. It's now I notice the small red dot on my scanner hammering towards us. The doors burst open and there's the lover, an adept, and she's spewing dark energy at my squad. We attack, then go back to our ship and report on the tragic events that took place on the frigate.
There's also these mini-quest things that are completely handled through dialogue. Like, 2 people might be arguing as you walk past them, so you stick your nose in and can try to mediate it. Depending on how you go about that, you're awarded exp, credits and alignment points. These little conversations are pretty entertaining, and you actually have to dig a bit to find a 'fair' resolution.
Oh, lets talk about alignment. Now I'm pretty sure this is class-dependent, I'm a soldier and my alignment shifts can be blue, to Paragon, or red, to Renegade. I'm assuming these are like master-classes that you can eventually switch to. It's cool - you're not really acting 'good' or 'evil' - it's much more subtle than that (as Shepherd is fundamentally a good character), so these alignment shifts are more related to your personality. They're also linked to your 2 conversational stats which you can choose to put points into - Charm and Intimidation.
Just talking about this damn game makes me want to play it more, so that's exactly what I'm going to do.
LOL SEEYA.
Fuck you man. I want to play this so much. Also those impressions are great you're a hero to me this day. But fuck you srsly. I had to go out and buy 300 dollars worth of pots today instead of getting me one of these, didn't I? Fuck. Damn you Detour. God this game looks awesome thanks for the info. fuck you now i have to buy this too
OMG I want this game. Screw Rock Band.
Hopefully I'll be picking this up tomorrow. If I were better with my money i'd already have it, but i have to wait until payday :p
No spoilers:
So the 'side quests' are sometimes extremely meaty. i did one today that had me hopping between 5 planets, and took me about 4 hours to complete.
I've clocked close to 20 hours, and have hardly touched the main storyline. What I have played of it has been rather great too. I honestly don't think I can go back to RPGs with mannequin protagonists.
As you would expect, as you level up, combat becomes much tighter. It feels much more like a 'proper' 3rd person shooter now (as a Soldier). There's also a point in the game where simple 'run in and shoot shit' stops working. You really need to use that R Bumper to pause the action, strategise, then act. One of my Adepts recently unlocked a skill that creates a gravity well which has an AoE effect. Lob it into a room and watch all the mobs float out from cover, helpless. I charge in, Assault rifle blazing, while my Tech casts AoE debuffs into the shitstorm. It's really, really fun.
I'm still not sure how they balance encounters with your current level, as you can pretty much do shit (outside of the main storyline) at any time. I can confirm that each encounter so far has been challenging, so there's obviously some kind of balancing going on.
Gear has a major impact on your character's usefulness. You'll notice a huge difference once you start getting better armor and weapons. All items are upgradeable, too. Weapons have 2 slots - one for actual weapon upgrades, such as heatsinks, recoil dampers etc, and another for ammo - armor piercing, chemical rounds, anti-personnel etc. These also have a pretty huge bearing on your effectiveness, and can be swapped out at any time, even mid combat.
The vehicle sections are probably the worst part of the game - but they're still fun. The controls of the ATV thing are kinda hard to get used to - a few times I've been stuck and unable to turn around. I think I'm still getting over Warthog controls.
I talked about how real the characters look when they converse. Well, a recent addition to my team has completely solidified that observation. Without giving anything away, I'm talking about the blue chick. The way she moves and emotes is fucking unreal.
Also, Lesbians. That's my spunky bitch Serra, picking up chix.
This is easily my GOTY so far, and I've played just about everything that could be considered. Except Mario Galaxy, and AU doesn't get it till the 29th. It's gonna have to be something amazing to top this shit.
Yeah, it's been scaling pretty well. Each major encounter has been relatively hectic. And one of the side missions I attempted was just retarded-difficult to the point where I decided to return later, so maybe some encounters are fixed.Quote:

Agreed about, well, both. The ATV is cool, but they could've done with slightly shorter segments since they're not as fun as on-foot combat. And the conversations really are something else. It's almost always a joy compared to the typical RPG conversational torture.Quote:

And you're twenty hours in and just now got the blue chick? Damn, it seems like ages since she joined. I'm at 13 or 14 hours so far, with plenty of side missions to do. There were times where I felt like I was unlocking a new faraway side mission every few steps.
Also, Achievements in this are awesome if only because some of them reward you in-game, too. I got the pistol expert (150 pistol kills) or whatever achievement, for example, and as a reward, my Marksman (pistol-specific) ability lasts significantly longer. Awesome.
I love this game.
Yeah, I'm honestly nowhere through the main story, hehe.
I was explaining this to my wife this afternoon. Normally I'm mashing through text or avoiding most ancillary dialogue to progress my character further. Not only are the conversations actually a joy to watch, they're interesting, and you are rewarded for most of them. It's amazing.
Me too :portalhug:
