Yep, the pistol is incredibly powerful actually.

Shotgun on an Adept rapes faces. Especially if you get the ability to do damage when enemies are in stasis. You just stasis em, walk right up to their face and tear em to shreds.

I've played for about 7 hours so far (about half of which is logged...the other half is me dying and restarting) and I just realized the assault rifle is a worthless piece of trash despite all the points I've pumped into it. (also, does the sniper stop moving around so much when you throw points at it? I'm going to just start leveling my pistol and shotgun.)
Yeaaaaah, the Assault Rifle is pretty fucking terrible. Sniper does get pretty decent when you fully level it up, but the Pistol gets my vote for best overall gun definitely. Shotgun's not too shabby though.
I am only 7 hours in (mostly talking, and just left that giant base) and I have used nothing but sniper and shotty.
I have the exact opposite exp with the assault rifle. I've been using nothing but the shotty up till I got to drive my first Mako. I got inside this snow base and was getting owned. I switched to the assault rifle and raped bitches.
