jesus fucking christ.
Fucking Fox News.
I really need to stop paying attention to mainstream coverage of games. From "Wii redefines gaming" to "Mass Effect will turn children into sex-crazed monsters", all it does is make me angry and frustrated.
I really need to buy this game......
That's some funny shit.
It's awesome to watch someone talk about something they obviously know absolutely nothing about. Granderoho on TNL.
God those people are idiots. Did they not just hear that stupid bitch author say she has never played the game yet she is running her damn mouth as if she knows everything about it? It just blows my mind how retarded these people are and makes me want to let my kids play M rated games as soon as they can pick up a controller... whenever I have kids that is. Sorry, but this just pisses me, so forgive my ranting.
Maybe*
Maybe.
Not Maby.
Not May be.
Maybe.
Though May Be is technically correct, it looks silly.
No, it isn't even technically correct. They have 2 completely different usages. You learn this in 8th grade.
He will hit 8th grade in about 3 years.
Maby,
You'll think of me,
when your all alone,
Maby, the one whose
weighting for you,
will prove untrue,
than what will you do?
Maby,
You'll sit and sigh,
wishing that I where near,
Maby, Maby, Maby...
I <3 Fox News. Shit. I wish I had the money and resources to create a product tailored to a demographic that lives in an acute state of paranoia and requires constant reassurance, guidance, and unbiased information, all of which just happens to reaffirm what they believed in the first place.
Genius, sheer fucking.
Also. Mass Effect is on my gamefly list. I guess it'll be more popular than ever.
Also, posta=maby
Libel lawsuit, please! Fox went beyond simple error and all the way to outright lying, and I'd love to see them get smacked down hard for it.
James
Taking FOX News to court for lying is an exercise in futility. Believe it or not, people have actually been fool-hardy enough to try it.
Oh man imagine if it wasn't a satellite interview, and the guy in the studio instead.
Bitch: Darling, I'm going have to go with the facts, and it shows teenage boys can't tell the difference between videogames and reality
Keighley: I've had enough of your snide insinuations. *punch*
It's cool the guy didn't lose it though. It makes us look a bit better I suppose. I don't know how I would react after she called me darling.
If EA posted on this board. I would give it rep.
I commend EA for doing that, as a company that main revenue come from sports franchises, they are really stepping outside the box with this one. It's only going to make them even more popular now that there calling BS on fox when others ran away from the issue. It's nice to see the bigger companies stick up for the smaller companies that are trying something new, even with a competive gaming atmospere they can still find ways to defend each other when right winger want to bring them down.
WTF are you talking about?
EA is calling bullshit on Fox News, and I commend them for it. It's not even there product and there going agianst one of the top news reporting companies. I just thought for a company like EA, you think they would be the last to do something like this since they sell mostly sports games and the fact that there games are so popular.
EA now owns BioWare you asstard. They aren't defending a competitor you moron, they are defending themselves. Learn to read noob!
Also, while they pretty much strictly sold sports games a maybe a decade ago, they have swallowed up so many smaller developers that I'd say they almost release more non sports games then the other way around, unless I am mistaken.
I had a hunch, but I Wiki'd it and it came up as bioware so I then wiki'd bioware and saw nothing that said they were bought out by EA. Next time I'll just say "good job EA" and play it safe, I set myself up for failure by posting long posts.
The trolling of Granderoho has actually gotten worse than the poster himself. From now on, if this annoying shit goes on, he's not going to be the one banned.
You guys are all better than this. Ignore him, and stop being part of the problem.
lol.

Jack Thompson defends Mass Effect
The one thing that bugs me about this game is how small it is. They hide it well, but there is really only one town, a couple different planet palettes, and a couple enemy bunker types. The main quest is really good and unique though. I'd like to see more towns and unique locations.
I guess Noveria counts as a town too, but there isn't that much to do there. Maybe there will be more as I get further in the main quest.
You're right, but they kind of make sense of it, to the point where I came to understood why it was that way. But at the same time the way they put it, you realize there is going to be no city even remotely close to the Citadel throughout the entire series if they finish it. Or at least that's what I fear :(
I was happy with the number of cities and levels.
Me too. But you know you would have been happier with more.
It doesn't ruin the game or anything, but when you start the game it looks so huge. Then by the time you're 15 hours in you've seen everything. It's a little bit of a let down. I don't think people are supposed to do every side quest like i am though. If you go through the main story and a couple side quests i bet the illusion would be preserved. I was expecting Morrowind, but it's not that.
I just rented this game, got through the first mission and then deleted my save, now I got to go through all the shitastic cutscenes.
You can skip through them. Dialog anyway.
Wow............I really thought I would like this game, but I really don't. I'm really thinking about taking it back tomorrow for a different game, and telling them the disc is scratched. I was really into Oblivion, but this games combat system is really fuck lame.
I can't remember if it works for cut scenes, but with dialog sections hit X and it skips forward through dialog blocks to get to the next tree faster.
My only problem with this games combat system was that it never lasted for a long period of time until the very end. It was more like "Alright, kill these 4 guys, stop, and here come another 4 or so in the next room." the few times there were awesomely large battles I was really into it.
They sure stole heavily from Frederic Pohl's Gateway series.
"Stole" lol. Almost every concept has been taken nowadays, what it comes down to is can you take these elements and craft them well into an enjoyable experience. Everytime there is an elite group of people it's like "LOL THEY STOLE THAT FROM STAR WARS" it gets old. Shit's been done, most of it has, get over it.
true true, I wasn't trying to start an argument. Just made an observation. This game is too KOTOR for me. Also, the driving sequences were unnecessary. I'm going back to Two Worlds.
First Mass Effect DLC has been announced and it'll be release on March 10th for 400ms points.
Mass Effect DLC announcementQuote:
To date, over 1.6 million gamers have explored the engaging sci-fi universe of Mass Effect. Beginning on March 10, fans everywhere will be able to expand the “Mass Effect” experience with the release of the first ever downloadable content for the award-winning saga.
The Bring Down the Sky downloadable content pack will be released to Xbox LIVE Marketplace on Monday, March 10 at 2 a.m. PST, and will be available for 400 MS points. This is the first in a series of planned downloadable content that further expands the Mass Effect universe and continues the adventures of Commander Shepard and the Normandy crew.
Bring Down the Sky includes a new uncharted world that introduces the notorious and feared alien race of the Batarians. A Batarian extremist group has hijacked a mobile asteroid station in the Asgard system, setting it on a collision course with the nearby colony world of Terra Nova. Only Commander Shepard can save the millions of innocent civilians before the asteroid completes its deadly descent.
Bring Down the Sky contains approximately 90 minutes of heart-pounding action and a new Achievement worth 50 Gamerscore points.
400pts for 90 min, no thanks
Makes me wish they allowed for full-evil choices so that you could take over the asteroid and pilot it yourself into the planet.
I'll probably purchase this at some point because I'm a sucker for more ME content.
Its all about how this is presented. Will it be like one of the main missions with story, new voices..etc? Or will it be like one of those awful palette swap empty planet side missions with those cookie cutter labs that you can run through in a minute? I'll wait until more DLC comes out and see if its enough to make it look like a legit expansion pack when I'm ready to go for a second playthrough (this time as a full on renegade).
400 points and I'm betting it's another one of the same dungeons we ran over and over again.
Pass.
Filet Mignon? Hardly. ME is more like a really good hamburger. Bioware are masters of presentation and storytelling, but they are some of the sloppiest coders I've seen. The texture pop-ins, glitches, and general bugginess of it all became so very much more apparent on the second playthrough that it actually pissed me off.
Mass Effect to pc this spring according to this press release.
Mass Effect to pc, published by EAQuote:
Award-Winning Epic Will Be Published By EA
REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--Leading video game developer, BioWare™, an Electronic Arts Inc. company, has announced that the award-winning space epic Mass Effect™ will be released for the PC in May 2008. Published by EA and re-designed for the PC, Mass Effect invites players to take the role of Commander Shepard as they set out on an adventure to save the galaxy from imminent destruction. Wrought with treachery, heroism, difficult decisions and a universe filled with unique and colorful species, Mass Effect delivers a truly compelling storyline.
Optimized for the PC, Mass Effect for the PC incorporates the following features:
* Optimized controls designed specifically for the PC.
* High resolution visuals – Mass Effect for the PC features highly detailed textures, characters and environments.
* Fully customizable controls – PC gamers can re-map the control scheme any way they like.
* Run & Gun Control – Players can assign biotic powers or skills to ‘hot keys’ allowing them to play Mass Effect with a heavier focus on action.
* New decryption mini-game.
* New inventory screen GUI and functionality – The enhanced inventory system makes it easier for players to equip and modify their weapons and armor.
“Mass Effect serves as a powerful example of video games as an art form, delivering new levels of emotional intensity, realistic characters and a gripping storyline – all set in a compelling new universe,” said Ray Muzyka, General Manager, BioWare and Vice President, Electronic Arts. Frank Gibeau, President of EA’s Games Label added, “EA has struck an agreement with Microsoft to handle future publishing for Mass Effect. We are looking forward to releasing Mass Effect on the PC this Spring and brand new titles in the future.”
Originally released for the Xbox 360™ videogame and entertainment system, Mass Effect has received critical acclaim throughout the world with more than 70 awards including Game of the Year, Console Game of the Year and Role-Playing Game of the Year. Mass Effect combines a deep story with intense combat and challenges the player to make difficult decisions that can significantly impact the course of events. An innovative conversation system allows for lifelike interaction with some of the most realistic digital actors, voiced by Hollywood actors such as Seth Green, Marina Sirtis, Lance Henriksen and Keith David. Mass Effect for the PC has not yet been rated by the Entertainment Software Rating Board.
I would expect all the tech issues in the 360 version to be totally ironed out with this version providing your pc is good enough. If there is a big enough difference and there is mod support I will surely get this version and sell my 360 version.
Good luck with that. I'm sure your PC game will arrive bug-free.
Considering the 360 game wasn't bugged enough for me to care I doubt this will be. I haven't purchased it for the 360 yet, so I'd probably go ahead and buy this for the PC.
No, they BSOD
And they're not free to fix.
However this wasn't a snipe at PC gamers, it was a snipe at lazy developers.
So them reworking the entire inventory system, adding in hot keys and changing how the game controls for the sake of porting it to the PC doesn't help deter the idea that they're lazy?
This. I can't imagine they'd rework elements of the game without making it somewhat stable and clean.Quote:

Some screens. Notice the quickslot stuff in the upper left portion of the screen.

The next question is, is DLC free and can users add shit ^.^
Is the game worth playing over again as the opposite alignment? I put 40 hours in as a good guy already. Not sure if I should consider it done.
You've beaten the game once. I enjoyed playing it again as the opposite, but you could definitely consider it done.
Did you save the council? Did you let them die? Did you take control of the galaxy (FIST OF DOOM SHAKE!!)? Did you save or kill Krogan boy? Did you mercilessly belittle Ashley until she dropped her pants for you? These questions are what you must answer before you consider Mass Effect done.
Uh...ya, probably. Its still enjoyable though.

EA and BioWare are employing SecuROM for the PC release of Mass Effect, a copy protection scheme you may recall from its universally loathed inclusion in 2K's BioShock. The Mass Effect SecuROM annoyance factor may be much more extreme, as the game requires that the owner authenticate the copy every ten days, meaning that an internet connection is required to play the game from the get-go and until eternity. In other words, if you paid for your copy of Mass Effect, expect to remind EA's authentication servers every week and a half that you aren't stealing it. The official Mass Effect FAQ explains it all.
For instance, you can install your copy of Mass Effect on three separate machines, but all must be internet enabled if you expect to play the game you paid for, as SecuROM will check every time you run MassEffect.exe. This sort of overprotection is nothing new, as "Neverwinter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, and Mass Effect all use SecuROM in some manner" says the FAQ.
Concerned?

Spore is similarly planned to take advantage of the SecuROM copy protection system, one that we're sure is going to eliminate every illegitimate copy of the game from appearing on torrent trackers for at least 48 hours. Take that, piracy! RIP! Owned! Etc!
Superior platform FTW.
Just play the cracked version before release FTW
Me too with Spore. Except also during and after release.
I don't find that nearly as obnoxious as limiting the number of installs like Bioshock, honestly. If it does it quietly in the background, then what does it matter to me? When am I going to go more than 10 days without internet?
PC Gamers really need to stop flipping out about every piece of copy protection software. At some point developers really do need to fight piracy or PC gaming will go away. There are copy protection solutions that are a major inconvenience, but the game requiring you to be online at some point every now and then when you play isn't a big deal even if you're on 56k.
There is a certain futility to it, but there are solutions that are starting to kind of work. Gears of War PC is pretty fucked up if you try to pirate it, I understand. If they can make a solution that works that isn't a practical inconvenience, then it's the first step to getting devs back on board with PC exclusives.
The thing is this solution isn't going to do shit to stop piracy. Pirates will crack it in no time.
As always the only thing it actually accomplishes is annoying the legitimate consumers.
Fuck SecuROM. I've had to resort to piracy just to install at least 3 SecuROM games because my DVD drive couldn't read through the bullshit copy protection.
It'd be nice if every publisher released their stuff on Steam. I can live with a single online activation during installation (and maybe patches), but anything beyond that is pushing it.
Also, the publishers need to worry more about zero-day piracy than anything beyond the first week or two. Steam fixes that too. Even if a Steam-dependent release is pirated ahead of time, there's no way to play it until the files are decrypted.
Pirates will pirate stuff regardless of protection. Invasive copy protection will only drive people who would prefer to stay legit to piracy in order to play games.
Stardock seems to have no revenue problems despite releasing games lacking any sort of copy protection whatsoever.
Stardock is a small company that doesn't expect big money, but yeah this copy protection will probably be cracked on release, if not before.
I'd just like to return for a moment to say FUCK BIOWARE! and FUCK WILL WRIGHT if he goes along with this for spore. that is all.
Two issues with that -- the first is that this (or any passive protection system, really) is going to get completely bypassed by pirates anyway. The reason people get so pissy with copy protection is that the only people it inconveniences are real customers.
[I remembered my other point -- when the copy protection servers are taken offline (and they will be taken offline at some point), you are shit out of luck... unless you crack the game.]
I remember reading a report in Gamasutra where some small independent developer actually ran an experiment on a game they had released where they added copy protection to the game as they developed it -- it had no effect on the number of active users in the game. Given the number of sales they were converting, it was not worth doing at all (just from a financial standpoint, never mind what kind of social equity you lose from your userbase).
(To be fair, they did say that implementing any copy protection at all did them a bump big enough to justify its implementation. But the difference between the various severities of copy protection were effectively zero.)
Bioshock's pirate versions weren't cracked right for like a good month. Which is when 75% of your sales are going to happen. Even longer for most Starforce games. They just want to hold off the pirates for a while, they know they can't thrwart them entirely short of subscription-based services.Yeah, that's sort of a pisser, but much like all the old floppy disk games I no longer have the manual for to find out what word is on page 3, paragraph 2, this isn't really a big deal. 10 years down the line, I'll download a crack. Big deal.

"Heh...you guys thought we were serious? Heh......heh...."
Fucking EA. STEAM. STEAMMMMMMMMQuote:
Q: What happens when I’ve reached the maximum #(3) of computers for my game and I need more, say due to theft of computer, computer crashes, etc?
A: EA customer service is on hand to supply any additional authorizations that are warranted. This will be done on a case-by-case basis by contacting customer support.
edit: It's not quite as bad as Bioshock. You're limited to three hardware profiles, not installs. So installing to a different hard drive or motherboard or whatever will use up an activation, but a simple re-installation won't.
Hardware profiles == bleh. That means you lose an activation if you ever upgrade. I'd actually take online re-authentication over that.
I now rescind both my "fuck bioware" and "fuck Will Wright" comments. good show.
Is there anyway to momentarily steady your aim when you zoom in with the sniper rifle?
no, you have to just up the sniper skill, which i always found useless in the long run.
Focus on your pistols and your shotguns. If your a biotic, focus on those too (i was the weapons class, but only those 2 ended up being useful, and i ended up spamming my biotic NPCs moves.)
Yeah, you just gotta either sweep snipe or upgrade it quite a bit. The pistol and shotgun are the best weapons in the game though so there's really no need to upgrade the sniper.
