I agree. The problem isn't really that stand up comedy is bad, it's that there are so many people doing bad stand up comedy. In that sense, bad standup can be excruciating, because there isn't something else, like a plot, that could recover someone's interest.

There's a lot of people out there working as comics on cruise ships and in bars, or working as middle acts warming up for real comics. These guys don't count.

I think one of the other problems with stand-up comedy, is that it really doesn't get much respect on its own, so a "big-name" comic, generally speaking, is one who made his name doing something other than stand-up comedy. There are rare exceptions, like Dane Cook, or Andrew Dice Clay, but by and large a "famous comedian" means "a famous actor who does comedy". Which stinks.
