I think one of the other problems with stand-up comedy, is that it really doesn't get much respect on its own, so a "big-name" comic, generally speaking, is one who made his name doing something other than stand-up comedy. There are rare exceptions, like Dane Cook, or Andrew Dice Clay, but by and large a "famous comedian" means "a famous actor who does comedy". Which stinks.
