It is, it gets better as you go along through the game. Some of the town and level design is quite gorgeous, and there is a huge variety. I was, however, disappointed that some towns with many roaming characters suffer from extreme slowdown/frame-dropping sometimes, making the game choppy to play at those times. That's inexcusable for an X360 game (but maybe they fixed this for the US release?).
It's a fun game (nothing spectacular), but it's very traditional JRPG. Like Dragon Quest. If you like that stuff, you'll probably like this.
