Tiger Woods 08 comes out on the same day, and Puzzle Fighter comes out Wednesday, and are you already done with Bioshock?
I want all of those games.

STUNTMAN! ALSO!
The first stuntman was horrible.
What makes this one not horrible?
You're full of shit, the first Stuntman was awesome, it just had horrible load times. Plus play the download the demo.
You don't have to sit at a loading screen longer than you play the game.
Try the demo...it rules.
edit: wtf beat
I will play that demo tonight.
Blue Dragon has one of the most awesome boss battle tunes ever - Eternity, sung by Deep Purple's Ian Gillan.
I do love the boss song, but I wish there was more then just the 1.
Too bad that song is the only good thing about the game.
You know, I enjoyed the demo.
It was good looking and nostalgic enough that while totally linear and crappy in almost every other respect, I know I'm going to end up buying the game. I'm a fucking sucker.
Shame on me.
I'm with you, I liked the demo and will be getting this, but probably not before Metroid Prime 3.
Persona 3 > Blue Dragon.
I'm really liking this game.
It's simple and cookie cutter, but whatever, it's been a long time since I've played something like this; even if a lot of it has come out on PS2 in the last year.
Character design makes me happy, music is cheerful and like the old PS Final Fantasies and the game just looks so damn sharp. I mean, this is the first truly next gen JRPG and somehow that's making up for the lack of innovation.
I'm sure this isn't for everyone, but damn if it's not for me.
Blue dragon isn't a bad game. I'm not much into RPGs anymore, but back in the day I think I would have really enjoyed this. With that said, I did play about 20 hours of it before I sold it (and my JP X360), but the game got gradually more interesting as I played it. That's always a good quality for a game.
The Honeymoon phase won't last long.
That sounds good to me.
What's happened so far is interesting as far as I'm concerned. It's not omfgbeststoryevar but it's been better than what everyone here had set me up to expect.
Everyone here over-exaggerates the crappiness of every J-RPG. Who goes into these at this point not knowing even the best usually turn into a bit of a grind/snooze/cliche-fest?
But actually, wait, Opaque, weren't you the guy who bought Enchanted Arms, and then were shocked that it was <gasp!> a traditional J-RPG complete with all the expected shortcomings?
[eM]'s developers said that only players who had MMO backgrounds would be familure with a world as large and open as theirs. Then they made a world so closed and so narrow that not one single fucking house had an interior; shit, the casino was nothing more than a menu.
Enchanted Arms wasn't bad because it was a traditional JRPG, it was just a complete piece of shit.
Blue Dragon on the other hand is fun.
It's just frustrating because there's no reason for it. This genre has so many possibilities open to it with next gen technology, and every time they squander than on conventions that were only born in the first place because of the limits of 8-bit consoles.
If every racing game to this day still played like Pole Position, you'd be goddamned sick of it no matter how much you like Pole Position.
No, there is a reason for it. Games following this strict formula have proven time and again to be decent to incredible sellers -- especially in Japan. Where's the incentive to innovate?
And my point was that none of this should surprise people anymore. Anyone going into Blue Dragon expecting anything but exactly what it is, and as a result ends up disappointed, is a moron. Oh my god, an overworld with dungeons and random battles?! Oh my god, scrappy characters saving the world in a convoluted storyline?! I've been duped! My outrage demands I warn everyone not to buy this terrible game!
Also, this "conventions only borne out of 8 bit's limitations" thing gets thrown around a lot on here, but I'm calling bullshit. There will always be a place for more comtemplative (read: turn-based) combat. If it's just random battles appearing out of thin air you're referring to (and by the way, I don't buy that it was too difficult for Enix to add a couple more sprites to DW's overworld; I'd bet more on laziness), is the game really going to turn amazing for you if you can see the enemy before it attacks? I agree this is a better design all around, but if an RPG doesn't have it, the game isn't ruined for me.
Would I like to see developers try new things with the genre? You're goddamn right I would. Does this mean I don't enjoy the games that decide not to, and instead stick closely to tradition, while still being fun, polished, enjoyable and familiar RPG romps? No, it does not.
Enix didn't make Ultima, they only remade it.
And yes, there were technical reasons why Ultima needed random encounters.
You're also missing the point completely. The issue is not turn based this or random that. It's that there's nothing new. It's that we can now make living breathing worlds, dynamic progression, TRUE role-playing, and unprecedented interactivity, and we don't. They don't build on the same formula, they just regurgitate it.
Akalabeth came before Ultima, Mr. History. And nobody in Japan cared about those games anyway. If they're all stuck in a cycle of imitation, it started with Dragon Quest (which could have had sprites in the overworld, even if it was imitating Ultima [not confirmed]).
And what the hell are you talking about. "Breathing worlds"? "TRUE role-playing"? "Unprecedented interactivity"? These are like the taglines for Oblivion -- which, oh yeah, is not trying to be a J-RPG, and J-RPGs are not trying to be Oblivion.
That's not the one Enix copied. Ultima is.
And Oblivion's not trying to be a J-RPG, but it's also not trying to be Treasure of Tarmin either. They're finding ways to use the technology to expand the gameplay in a way that makes their game more fun. Japanese RPGs don't try to make things better. They act like shit's been perfect all along and technology is just for the paint job.
P.S. Don't call Dragon Quest's battle system thoughtful. There is no thought needed. Turn based is fine, but if you want to make me wait, for the love of god give me something to think about while I do.
This argument is tired.
Blue Dragon sucked, and ya know what so did Oblivion, so both sides of the RPG world have fucked up so far on the 360.
There are no random battles on the overworld in any Ultima game.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Dragon Quest guys at Enix never played Ultima. It's just as likely they were influenced by the tons of existing RPGs on Japanese computers that were inspired by Western RPGs. I have tried but haven't been able to pinpoint the exact birth of RPGs in Japan. The book Game Over claims Henk Rogers (of Bullet Proof Software) introduced the genre with Black Onyx but there other games like Danchizuma no Yuwaku by Koei which I have seen dated as 1983.
Monster Battles justify this game, imo.
You start a fight with a really strong fire and ice monster and the first they do is turn each other into super weak monsters that give you the same exp and sp, even though they now take only one hit to kill and cause no damage. It's fucking awesome.
This will get bought tomorrow, just trying look for a decent deal on it. Anyone know anything about this being maybe 50 bucks somewhere?
Playing Blue Dragon is like watching old Nicktoons.
Yeah you've seen it all before, but it's so fucking solid and well designed that it's still enjoyable if (and this is the important part) you like the kind of game it is in the first place.
I'm having a better time with this than I've had with any RPG since DQ8 and honestly I'm having a hard time understanding why nobody else enjoyed it so far.
I picked it up today at lunch. I should be able to play for an hour or so when I get home late tonight. I'm excited.
p.s. God, Gamestop is so sucky. They refused to sell me MHF2 PSP because I didn't pre-order it. Do they really think they'll scare me into pre-ordering in the future instead of just going to another store, or buying online? I guess I shouldn't expect anything else from them at this point. My fault for going in there in the first place, but their location is just so convenient sometimes.
Yeah, I was actually abnormally bored with that game, too. It really doesn't make sense since I loved all the other DQs I played, and all of Level 5's other games.
The first 2 hours of DQ8 bored the hell out of me and I stopped playing, good thing I hadn't bought it.
I'm pretty sure Yuji Horii is on record as saying he was influenced by both Ultima and Wizardry.

I loved DQ8 because of the boomerang. That shit was badass.
This game is sugoi.
DQ8 is better than Blue Dragon. DQ8 was the best RPG last generation.
It just took 5 or 6 hours to start up, but after that it was fucking awesome. Please believe.
EDIT: wait, you played for thirty hours and still didn't like where it was going? The fuck? Did you start catching monsters and shit?
I liked Jessica, but she wasn't "cute."
I think I figured this out awhile ago, and then forgot: if an RPG has a cute girl, I like it. If it doesn't, I don't.
Blue Dragon = Kluke = I like it.
I think the building design is awesome in this game.
DQ8 had Dragon Ball characters but that's where the connection ended. Blue Dragon has homes and hospitals right out of Dragon Ball and that is awesome shit.
Yep, I did, and that just wasn't fun. The boring/nearly non existent story line, the cookie cutter "we did this in 1989" battle system, and random battles every 10 seconds up the ass were what killed the experience for me. I can say that the characters and visuals were nice, but that's about where my positive thinking ends. The game didn't bring a single thing new to the RPG genre, and I still to this day cannot understand all the praise it was getting.
The only thing Dragon Quest VIII did that I think was really cool, is having the bonus dungeon actually connected to the story.
Blue Dragon is the most abusable game I've ever seen.
You can make a barrier that lets you instantly kill things and still be rewarded with SP and have your classes level up. I'm running around killing enemies with the barrier to level up a class that has no stat upgrades but give you a skill that allows you to equip extra skill slots.
So basically I do nothing and after an hour of this I'll be able to equip ten abilities instead if 3 and my guys will all be monsters crazy early.
I love this game.
It's not really fun.
Somehow though, I love getting new abilities every few minutes and just mowing through enemies on the field. You absolutely don't need to do this to play the game, I just figured since I could I would, since I love being overpowered in RPGs.
I never had the urge to overlevel in RPGs. Sucks all the fun out of the game.

I need Kluke merchandise. Can't find any dolls...

Face plate is actually pretty classy. Play-asia's sold out, though.
I'm not sure what you by this, of course there were. The very first one was a pain-filled gauntlet of enemies chasing you down like a dog the second you left town, killing your whole party and leaving you stranded without enough money to resurrect anyone. Great stuff.
Actually, yeah you could.
Your class levels and abilities can be more important then your level. If you overlevel your classes and get the good skills early the game is a joke.
Also be aware that the difference between being the right level for a dungeon and being over leveled is usually just one level. A dungeon can be tough at 10, but instantly become a joke at 11. So if you're in the habit of fighting everything like I am you get extremely overleveled quickly and it sucks.
This sounds like a game that would benefit from enemies leveling with you.
See, but I love being overpowered. It rocks.
You still haven't made a convincing argument as to why completely removing all challenge from a game is fun.
He just likes crushing things.
my <3 for you is like CRUSH........

I think I have to get this game now because everything that Opaque likes about the game agrees what I would like about a traditional JRPG. I'm also a sucker.
I'm a couple hours in and already pretty bored of the battles.:sweat::sweat::sweat::sweat::sweat::sweat::sweat::sweat:
I'm trying to sneak past the enemies now. :red:
Someone go buy Wild Arms 5 instead and tell me how it is.
The review I read pretty much said every other game was shit, but 5 fixes all the problems with the other game.
The Hex system is in there but supposedly is a crap load better.
But that fact you liked 4 may be a bad sign.
I thought 4 was a very entertaining game... mostly because of the platforming and hex battle system. The characters were also cheerful, in that Skies of Arcadia type of way...not all "doom and gloom its the end of the world as we know it" like most other main characters in RPGs.
I'll be checking out part 5 to see if its any better or worse than 4.
Mural Town completely justifies Blue Dragon.
I just got there this afternoon.
After about 11 hours, I can honestly say that this game rocks. I know everyone here expects every RPG released to push the genre forward, but I'm content to play a traditional JRPG, old school style. I loved DQ 8, and this is as close as there is on the 360. Great stuff!
Then the answer's simple: Don't buy it. :)
I don't mind playing a traditional RPG, and I really don't care if the game is a SNES RPG with modern presentation. I'm enjoying it.
Hear hear!
Just finished disk one.
This game is great and I love it.
After playing through the demo, I cant get that damn boss music out of my head.
The presentation and design on a lot of the enemies is really good, but the repetition of the usual jrpg grind got under my skin. The Barrier thing seemed like a good way to counter that repetition though. Ill give the full game a shot later when I have more patience...maybe by then a patch will come out that replaces the boss music....with anything...Id settle for it being muted but sound effects on...
I love the Boss theme.
The first time I heard it I couldn't understand what the big deal was. But after the second time I was hooked.
i'm watching my boy play it now...and it's smooth as hell and no way Xbox could run it this smooth...edges are polished well and very fluid..nice game and with the mega 60+ hours of gameplay, what a great experience lies ahead..
