Radiant Silvergun in an upcoming MAME.

I know that there's a lot of fans of this game here, so I thought I'd give a little heads up that Radiant Silvergun will soon be working. Unfortunately about 95% will not be able to even play the game at an acceptable frame rate as you need a enormous CPU to run it. I've always heard about this game but have never had a chance to play it, so I guess everyone will see what all the talk is about.

I have the Saturn ROM of the game, but I haven't taken the time to download a Saturn emulator. I wouldn't think you'd need more than a 1.5 Ghz processor to run something like that.

Lol, you'd think wrong. Saturn is brutal as far as emulation goes. Any P4 or Athlon64 class processer will get the job done with SSF (by far the fastest Saturn emu), but if you want 60fps you better have a beast.

There does not exist a computer that can play ST-V games full-speed in MAME (except Shienryu which is not very demanding).

Well it's not so much that they are individually (well, not enough to explain it entirely), but getting them to sync up and work together properly is the real bitch.

The reason why I like RS so much is that it's a shooter, but it has the length, story, and cinemas to make it a real game.

I don't replay 5 level long games for score day after day.

You heard from an idiot. The only reason old games ever get (temporarily) removed is because they're in the process of re-writing and improving a driver (often re-doing it from scratch), and sometimes it means games that once worked will be broken while they finish it (for an extreme example, Moonwalker was nixed for almost 2 years while they re-wrote all of the 16 bit Sega drivers). But this is always temporary, and always ends up with better emulation for those old games in the end (a ton of fantastic 16 bit Sega stuff is now supported that couldn't work before, as well as improved Moonwalker)

Believe me, MAME is all about getting as many games supported as accurately as possible. They'd never "abandon" a game to "make room".

I liked the cutscenes too. Even though I had absolutely no idea what the hell was going on in them, it still created some kind of context for you to be flying your little ship around in. I wish they had bothered to translate Ikaruga's pre-level poem things for the same reason.

Wait, does this mean I'm not going to be able to sell my copy for 240 dollars anymore?

Are you complaining about performance or accuracy? I never said it got faster. But yeah, in the newest MAME (0.102), Moonwalker works great, as does Thunderblade, Galaxy Force 2, Power Drift, Gain Ground, AB Cop and all the other 16 bit Sega classics that never used to work. System 32 has been much improved, also, though a few games are still buggy or not working.

Not anymore. Mariusz got to improve the driver recently and the latest MAME update runs many games at full speed.

Rabbit is not ST-V-based but I agree. Home versions of these sucked a bit.

Real games have to have story, length, and cinemas? I have been playing Ketsui for the past 6 months and it is a five level long shooter. The best part is that those 5 levels are fucking 100% gameplay and fun the ENTIRE TIME. I fucking hate loading times and listening to stupid ass stories (MGS). Funny thing is, I consider the story of Ikaruga to be one of the best, and it does it in a such a way that doesn't get in the way of PLAYING.

In SSF, Radiant Silvergun is obscenely slow if you don't use frame skip. My Dell's CPU is 3.2 GHz.

Here are some other results I've had with some games:
Chase HQ - Slow BGM tempo.
Daytona USA Circuit Edition- Somewhat slow.
Hyper Duel- Perfect.
Galaxy Force II- Perfect.
Galactic Attack (USA)- Perfect.
Tempest 2000 (USA)- You can't get past the title screen. SSF will crash when you try to start a game or if it tries to get to the demo.

Music played through the Saturn sound hardware (i.e. Chase HQ, Radiant Silvergun) seems to slow it down. Redbook BGM is no problem.

It perdorms better on Athlon 64s for whatever reason. I have an Athlon64 3200 and, while I still need frame skipping, the framerate is very healthy and on most games I don't notice the skipping. If I were running it under XP 64-bit edition, I'd probably get full frames.

The sound emulation is the roughest part of SSF, but even that has improved by leaps and bounds laterly, to the point where it sounds very good in all the games I have.

I doubt he was saying that shooters aren't real games as much as he was saying that he enjoyed having elements not traditionally in a shooter present, or something like that.

This game is the freaking ultimate of ultimates. There is no shooter even in the same league. Im all for everyone getting their chance to play it - cause treasure sure aint getting off their asses to port it somewhere. They could have been billionaires if they released this godsend on a popular system. I need to fire this badboy back up...

Yes, it is, because it didn't put me into a coma. That's a bit of a stretch, but I like the weapon variety and slightly more open chaining RS has going.

It isn't that great, though. DoDonPachi kicks the shit out of it in my book, and even as far as Treasure's go, I prefer Gradius V.

My favorite shooters are Mars Matrix and Strikers 1945. When I play them, it's only for like 2 days in between other games. I got them at about $15 each and I would never spend more than that on them.

Another GREAT thing about Radiant Silvergun: all the bosses are actually possible. You get some crazy but manageable (and VERY imaginative compared to the coma-inducing standard of the genre) bullet patterns that are actually (gasp) fun to play. Your ship's hit box is insanely small, as are the boxes on all bullets, so it's not as bad as it looks (there's a time-unlocked option to view all hit boxes in-game, very nice touch).

The ability to level up your ship, save, the bonuses you get, getting credits from your performance in Arcade Mode (no cinemas, branching path) to play in Saturn Mode (every single stage), etc. I could really go on and on. It's not just some shitty shooter they pooped in out in a week that 3 people will replay for years and everybody else ignores; it's the total fucking package.

There is no set formula - the level design changes often mid stage - bosses pop up left and right (and im not talking some wimpy short mini boss fights either - each boss is tough and lengthy - and each one is different). So RS's formula is more like Level. boss, boss, boss, more level, boss, even more level, end boss, end of level.

As soon as i fought the first 3 bosses - All within 15 minutes of playtime, all totally different bullet patterns which change frequently (no 2 pattern and its memorized bosses here), all took a considerable amount of time to kill, all with different ways to fight and win against them (due to being able to destory them piece by piece - which is optional i might add) - All which didnt feel cheap in the slightest - And all this happened just about HALFWAY thru the first level. Right then, I knew this game kicked serious ass. Now times that by like the 50 other bosses and you're good to go.

Its way way more epic than other shooters - and it actually feels like they spent some time on it rather than busting out a 5 or 6 level breeze thru of a shooter like every other shooter made in the past 20 years. Now I love me a traditional shooter - I could play Battle Garregga all day, but to me, Radiant Silvergun is the next evolution of shooters. I really hope treasure goes back to that formula on their next one.

PS: I love Radiant Silvergun.

It's different than Ikaruga. I personally like Ikaruga better, because of it's stronger level design (Radian is almost all boss fights, like Alien Soldier), shorter length, and better pacing, but Radiant is no slouch in terms of level design, and its system is much, much more flexible, which a lot of people enjoy. I'm gonna have to dissagree with you here. RS is NOT mostly boss fights. There are a lot of them, but stages have lots of normal shmupness too. Alien Soldier is like 5 seconds of a stage, then boss fight. RS isn't like that at all.

Anyway, I like Soukyugurentai maybe just a tiny bit more than Silvergun.

Yeah, I was exaggerating a bit, but when you compare the amount of boss fighting in RS to Ikaruga, I think my point still stand.

I still don't get the fuss about Soukyugurentai, but I like Dodonpachi more thain either of them

I'm not sure why I like it either. I just know that I have a lot of fun playing it. I never played the Donpachi games, I need to track them down; or at least Dodonpachi.

Thanks for the impressions, Destro. Now Should I just be happy to play it on Mame or does the Saturn version do something special like sing you a song or something that the arcade version doesn't. Keep in mind that I don't have a Saturn and I don't usually Ebay for games. I don't think that this or any game is worth the 150 + dollars that people charge for it. I wish Treasure would just rerelease this damn game already so I could buy it.

I paid somewhere in the neighboorhood of $100 for my copy and have gotten well more than $100 worth of enjoyment out of it.

I love the weapon vareity (6 different attacks plus a sword wtf)

The music is fantastic.

I'd suggest getting a modchip and downloading the game though. I certainly would if I could do it over again... its not like Treasure is getting the money for sales of the game.

I mean, I don't put the soundtrack in my cd player and rock out or anything, but it really helped the game I thought.

Unless there has been a new release that I missed recently, it doesn't work for any of the current versions, and is for an upcoming release.

While I love shooters, I don't get to play them often. I've only really been exposed to the Cave shooters, and the Raiden series (dissapointed in Raiden 3,btw :( ) I really need to track down Soukyugurentai somehow.

It's got it's equivelent of VGS, at least. It's out of the bleem! dark ages. It's not too far off now. I think it's up to playing 85% of games with no serious bugs.

Oh, and on my Athlon64 3200, I get 20fps in RSG. Woof. Even for ST-V, that's slow. Even with the best system out there, SSF is going to be the way to go.

Runs pretty well. 60% speed on this 1.6ghz Turion. Should run great on my desktop when vacation's over.

Thanks for the info. I got it and played Radiant. It doesn't run full speed by a long shot. I'm running an Athlon 64 3500 and 1.5 gigs of ram. Boo. I like the game, though.

Anime cutscenes and an additional different level layout or some such (it's been a while). If you really like the arcade version I'd say pick it up, it's got a number of nice little things added to it.

Well

Glad more people get to play it without spending $200+.

It's not my type of game though, too slow-paced and chains are absolutely required to make any sort of progress. At least in Ikaruga chains are only for score, but in RS you need to chain to build up your weapon levels.

The Saturn version adds a handful of bosses as well.

Go here for some kickass RS vids. Although you'd have to put an MMO number of hours into this game to get to be that good at it.

Goofy. What build of MAME are you using? Because I was getting about 45-55 fps during gameplay, which, with frameskipping set to 1, will give you full speed.

Cool. I had Mame drawing every frame. Once I switched it, it ran alot better. Very weird indeed.

Yeah, got it. I've had it for years but I just downloaded the 0.103 and it keeps saying "epr19730.ic8 NOT FOUND".

You need the ST-V bios rom set in addition to the Radiant ROMs. The set is called stvbios.

Yes. Do a search for Mame Bios and I'm sure you'll find what you need. Put them in your roms folder unzipped.

Shit, I had unzip the S-TV BIOS, copy it, then unzip whatever S-TV ROMs I had, paste said BIOS into the folder with the ROM, then rezip it all back up to get it to work properly.

Nice to know there was an easier way.

Yeah, that's because changeling lies. just put stvbios.zip in your rom folder along with rsgun.zip.

edit: Yup, that did it. Almost full speed too (Athlon 64 3200+). I've wanted to play this game since it came out, thank god for emulation.

Yeah, I liked Iridion II quite a bit. I'll probaly pick up Nanostray eventually.

I just hooked up the old Saturn yesterday and gave this a go again. I don't know... Honestly: I haven't quite been able to get back into the game since I completed it the first time. I had some major fun with Dodonpachi afterwards though.

I'm getting ready to dump this damn onboard audio and get a real (Creative Labs etc.) sound card. Onboard audio can steal CPU cycles. When I run Shienryu, Soukyugurentai, or Chase HQ in SSF- the music tempo is a tad slow and the whole emulation is laggard. These games don't use redbook music but rather play the BGM on the fly.

I think that its more of an issue with Mame, rather than issues with your on-board sound. I may be wrong, though.

Actually onboard audio isn't going to make that kind of stuff lag, since that stuff eats CPU cycles to emulate regardless. What will be slower than it would otherwise is stuff that maps MIDI through windows (Dosbox is the only emulator I can think of that does this).

Say, RS runs quite well on my slowass imac g5 (1.5ghz) via macmame. They have come a long way.

yeah. both Cotton 2 and Cotton Boomerang work.
