Being that I'm getting one of these funny graphic design degrees, I figured I'd start posting random garbage in here, too. It's going to start really shitty, though.

This is why I've been using imageshack for a while. TNL likes to eat attachments.Quote:

And, before you ask, purple and gold are also regal colors.
I'm just starting with this whole "art" thing. Honestly, given it's what I really wanted to do, I should've been doing this all along. Too bad my parents were so set in their ways to know how to set me on the right track for it as I was growing up. While these here may not necessarily be "art," I'm really looking for critique and suggestionaries on whatever else I may post here.
With practice at Photoshop comes proficiency... and then Ninja Skills.
I don't know of any pointers other than "keep it up".
This is what you want to do with your life?
I would disown you.
Better than the Art Ed. major in my class that was animating pictures of people hanging themselves.Quote:

Learn shortcut keys for your programs. Your teachers tell you it increases efficiency and you have no idea how right they are. There aren't many functions in Illustrator which have a command shortcut that I can't get to.
The only thing I hate about Photoshop is that some of their menu options like image size and crop don't have a shortcut command attached to them, but I'm more of an indesign, illustrator and quark designer.
If you're in your first year he's probably trying to get you used to working with the program itself. What kind of course are you taking, graphic design? Just note that if you aren't in a major city (Chicago, New York and Toronto are the three big ones in the east for design) then you'll have a hard time getting any meaningful work.Quote:

Don't take advice from Andrew, unless you want to end up with a shitty webcomic.
Like Robobo.
Or a great graphic design job like Andrew has with a shitty webcomic on the side. You could, of course, take advice from g0zen, who has by all accounts accomplished nothing.
Don't throw away what could quite possibly be a highly profitable career with Zoobooks.

...but, yeah. I'm going to finish my original design. I liked it better.
I think they're awesome, I'd like to see more in this series. The "lion" type-face is great, once you get better at cutting out the images smoothly you'll be well on your way.
...
Panda *_*
I like everything about the panda except the top one coming down. It's just too zany. Center is boring too.
The lion makes me laugh.
make a childrens webcomic called "when animals flip out". It will sell millions.
INSTANT EDIT: .....yes over the internet. Its that good of an idea.
Some new stuff coming:

Hey, Chao, I want to send you a PM about something but your box is full. Empty that shit, dude.
You're getting better.
I just need to know who's trolling who here.
This is true.Quote:

Chao- Looks nice. At the risk of looking like an ignoramus, is that Illustrator work?
Yes. :D
http://www.joesartgoeshere.com/
Still under construction, but whadayathink?
Also, I linked to Comet7 (at least, I will when I fix the link lol) so that Kidnemo would be slightly less likely to fight me.
Looks nice.
The type setting (or whatever it's called) on the about page looks boogy in Firefox. Or... MAYBE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO LOOK THAT WAY, AND IN ITS BOOGYNESS, IT IS NOT BOOGY.
IT'S MY STANCE ON CONFORMITY AND IF YOU DON'T GET IT YOU'RE DUM GTFO
I know, I was told about it already. It looks fine in my Mac Firefox, though. I've been told to set the font size of the page to, like, next to nothing and reposition it.
Website's got some shit on it. PEOPLE TELL ME IF THERE ARE PROBLEMS KAY
What exactly is that "Most expensive abstract Photo I've ever taken"?
The hood of my crashed car.
OUCH.
I thought it was like, water droplets and you dropped your camera into the water after the picture.
lol I wish.
Yeah. Get rid of the fucking glowing edges.
Agreed.
I just thought the text needed something else... I still don't know what, though.
It needs a better font, for starters.
Your drawing isn't very good. You'd be better off just using the original photo and making it all lame & high-contrasty.
Why is the rising sun purple? Keep it red & white, and maybe incorporate that color scheme into the text.
You're going color crazy. Keep it simple until you actually learn what works & what doesn't.
[/shotgun critique]
I like shotguns.
They're more educational than fucking school.
C.W. Post: It's like a boarding pass to grad school.

Yeah, I might be doing a comic here, but just 'cause I like drawing cartoony. If i'm going to succeed, I've gotta do it a lot. here's an excuse!
Comment on site design, please. that's what I'm most concerned about.
Shitty AfterEffects assignment. Laugh at it, as it's awful.
Thanks for showing us The Snowman, Frogacuda.

I burn the DVDs for my anime club, therefore, I make the intro, dammit.
Youtube did some funny shit to it, though... wacky warping...
i have one too :X
HAY HAY This is my thread. No viral marketing allowed.
I just finished this fake event poster for class. I'm not all too happy with where I had to place the information, but I think the giant Astro Boy head brings in a lot of the attention, and I really didn't want to detract so much from it.
Click for full size
Another poster I made for submissions to the school's creative magazine:
Click for full size
o man! i-con is on my birthday! I gotta go!
DO IT
Come watch my AMV Contest!
The background on the anime poster is amazingly cute. I think the overall layout turned out pretty well too.
The lettering on your posters needs work. There are holes in your type between the letters I could drive a wideload through man. TRACK AND KERN THAT SHIT! I like the first one better. It has a lot of vibrance to it. The second one kind of looks like an attempt at the typical grungy college designer layout (which isn't an insult, btw. grungy can be awesome).
I think the typography is the only thing really bothering me about both of those.
I banged that second poster out really quickly, but I'm surprised none of my professors noticed. Maybe they didn't look hard enough at the lettering. It was supposed to be more of an old, comic book ad. Y'know, the ones that say, "HAY DRAW THIS BEAR AND YOU COULD WIN!"
Regardless, thanks for noticing. I usually do kern, but I suppose not enough.
Good job on the logo, but becareful with the text. The words at the top are too close to each other so the drop shadows are overlapping (look at the exclamation point).
Also, no mock magazine cover is complete with out a upc!
Rolling Stone doesn't have one! HAH!
Honestly I was concentrating so hard on getting the text to pop that I didn't even notice that. thanks, man, I'll keep it in mind.

I made a flash! :O
Also, could a mod kill the stupid, highway replacement images in one of my first posts? It won't let me edit them and my original host crapped out on me.
Hey, check it out, I do actual awesome work now. Just me and the person on the desk on the staff page. S'it.
It's my school's art & literature annual:
www.joesartgoeshere.com/things/loomings.pdf
You guys should put what media the person used to create their stuff.
P.S. Alee Farohi is good.
We were going to put a lot of info, but barely anyone submitted anything but their name. They were also really difficult to get ahold of. Keep in mind, this thing was mostly put together by myself, the shaggy-haired fellow with the glasses on the staff page, and the girl crawling on the table behind me.
...and, yeah, that Alee fellow is frigging amazing.
I really hate that typeface you have on the Rollingstones cover. Cool choice of photo, I like it. It's bold and it would get my attention on the rack.
Your flash movie is very entertaining and educational. What music is that? Its weird and fits the flash movie to a T.
Cats on Mars from Cowboy Bebop.
I couldn't find any other typeface I liked for my cover. I mulled over choices for weeks.
I like flash movie quite a bit yea.
I just finished paginating a 85 page hand held glossary. Try paginating a magazine like rolling stone. It will drive you fucking insane.
Hey, have a Flash-based site i'm working on:
www.joesartgoeshere.com/wcwp
I don't know how far along you are but that website is kind of... ugly. I'm not trying to be a dick or anything (I think you're a pretty good designer) but the green fading in to the house, the overall layout and the pastel green mouseovers have very little style. And I'm not sure but pages only load up once every 2 or 3 tries when I click on their links. Inline frames are also kind of difficult for users to manage (I know it sounds lame but its true).
And the typography on the rotating banners on the right hand side is pixellated and unlegible.
My advice to you would be to buy some nice web design annuals and check out some truly innovative and wacky websites and get inspired by them. And then go back and try some of it.
A rule of thumb in the design industry (and I've only been in it for 2 years) is that your very first draft should be insane. Like... the client won't understand it. Then you scale yourself back and get something thats functional for the client AND represents your skill.
All the text looks weird to me.
Only the first two links under "info" work right now. I should have mentioned that. And, yeah, I need to change that green and outline text those buttons so the font I chose comes through.
Green and yellow are the school's colors and, generally, what they like everything to incorporate.
Yeah, those aren't mine. They're awful, I just didn't have the time to design my own, yet. That's the remnants of my predecessor's version of the site.Quote:

Nice advice, thanks. I'll use it when I'm not following what I posted above (she knows HTML, but little else. It's honestly not bad for a political science major, but GAHHH that yellow!)Quote:

I feel somewhat accomplished today.
...but I'd be far more accomplished if I had actually finished all of my work in time for the end of the semester instead of, well, none of it.

Huge image. Must click.
