Alright kids, guess what time it is?
Alright, so we all know my tumultuous relationship with Michael Bay. Michael Bay is a hack director who has a lot of skill in action scenes and... jack shit else really. So here's Transformers. And... I liked it. Well, mostly.
My attitude toward the movie is basically in line with Dole and Despair. Needed more fighting robots, less Michael Bay humans. The scenes with the Transformers bantering between one another were awesome for all of the nostalgia and pure awesomeness that they were. There just needed to be more of it really. Whenever it cut away from the robots I found myself thinking AUTOBOTS GO BACK TO THE AUTOBOTS. To be frank, every human plot line could have been cut save Sam, the girl, and Sam's parents. The rest were completely unneeded, bogged the movie down, and gave me something to dislike (the showdown between Frenzy, Turturro, the black guy and company was awful, everyone of those characters needed to go).
BUT. Like I said, What Bay can do right, he can do right. The battle scenes were really great especially (as said before) Starscream fighting off the jets. BUT what Michael Bay does poorly shines through the movie too. His swooping camera movements and shaky action shots drive me insane, it's so hokey. The shots of the cars driving through the desert seemed like an expensive super bowl ad for Chevrolet. Also his squeezing humor into scenes where its not needed made me twinge a few times (I'm speaking of scenes like where the little kid yells COOL before Prime fucks up Bonecrusher (which was awesome btw), the worst was probably when Bumblebee peed on John Turturro).
The film is worth seeing simply for the Transformers. The actual Transformers were done perfectly. The Autobots were likable and kind of silly, and remarkably like how I remember them. The Decepticons needed more fleshing out though, none of them got any significant screen time really. Maybe for a sequel they can get Bay to do the action scenes, and a competent director to handle the human and story elements. I think that would work... right?
I would feel weird fucking a girl on and in front of four sentient cars. Just a thing.
*Edit - The JJ Abrams trailer was really interesting, that man knows how to bait an audience. People were rumbling about the movie into the opening credits of the actual film. I'm not sure about an entire movie shot like that though, it has the set up of being one massive cocktease.
Just got back from it, I think I'm in the Despair/Dole/Mech wagon. Tons of cool stuff, but room for improvement.
Aside from what other people have said, I think the main thing this movie missed was a lot of the character from earlier Transformers incarnations. Granted, it's more realistic for the robots to just start slamming away as soon as they see each other, but there was surprisingly little dialogue between them. With the rash of comic book movies coming out, I hate to say this, but I really the robot confrontations were handled a bit more like a comic book....more spontaneous pauses in the action and verbal exchanges between meaningful skirmishes.
I didn't really care about the product placement, but it was annoying how often the movie reinforced just how great the military is. I think the military's involvement should have only provided a relative scale to how powerful the Transformers were. And when the show the one dude going back home to his wife and daughter at the end, I just about wanted to barf. None of those soldier's "family" scenes did anything for the movie except provide some sappy, awkwardly placed, nationalistic crap.
And WTF with them getting it on right on top of BumbleBee's hood? Creepy.
Prime's face was pretty retarded. He looked like Johnny 5 with those eyelid things, and his mouth was cheesy. Looked fine with his mask on, saw no reason to mess with the original design there...which surprises me because I generally liked the new autobot designs. The decepticons were pretty bland though. Animation was phenomenal regardless.
As for the story and the ramifications thereof, I'm not going to even bother breaking it down because it's just not worth it. But the Sector 7 stuff, the glasses and associated story behind them, and college intern hacker team could all use some major revision.
This movie also lacked any 80's fab, and while I realize the movie can't go that way, some great 80's cartoon moments would have gone a long way for the fans.
edit: Lol, K drops that post in while I'm typing, echoing a lot of my thoughts. I totally forgot to mention the awkward "humor" moments. Actually, I agree with pretty much everything K said.

Remember ... Tyrese's character said that no military jet flies this low. Well that jet that hit Megatron flew real low. Also had blue tracers ... the same blue tracers that SS used to take down the F22's.

The Decepticons are dumped in the deepest part of the ocean. The same area and the same description used to describe where the Decepticons crashed landed in the original cartoon.

Yeah I read that, I really didn't word what I meant very well. It's not references to the old material I want, but the 80's flavor. I'm sitting here trying to decide what that really even means, and I think it's the music mostly. It's just not Transformers without it.Quote:
