So there you go. Go Yanks.Quote:
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the last five-game sweep in the majors was Boston over Toronto at Fenway Park in 2002.
The Red Sox hadn't been swept in a five-game series since the Cleveland Indians did it in 1954. The Yankees swept Boston in five games in New York in 1951 and at Fenway in '43.
I have to say...I'm usually partial to the Sox over the Yanks but I couldn't help myself from enjoying the raw awesomeness of such a season-killing beatdown.
I've never watched snuff but I'd imagine it would feel a lot like this series.
There seem to be quite a few Mets fans on this board, and I acknowledge the fact that they are probably the best team in the National League...even after losing a few key players. Honestly, I think losing Duaner Sanchez is probably one of the biggest losses for you guys because he was awesome for the Dodgers. So, I just had a question for all the Mets fans: Who do you think would be the toughest team to face off against in the playoffs? Do you see the Dodgers posing any sort of threat whatsoever?
I'm a Dodger fan, and I have seen every game so far this year. I would like to think that they have the best shot at beating the Mets. However, I have to admit that they are just way too streaky and I worry that they will go into some sort of prolonged losing streak again. Also, I think the main weakness of the Dodgers is their power. Even though they are close to the top of the league in every offensive category they are DEAD LAST in HOME RUNS with only 102. I just don't think the Dodgers would stand a chance if they have to out slug a team that can hit tons of home runs. They can only seem to score through manufacturing runs with their speed and blooping teams to death with singles and gap doubles. So, if they get in some kind of home run hitting contest they will be in trouble.
I really hope my Dodgers make the playoffs though, and I have to say that I am looking forward to playing the Mets the most :)
I think if the Mets get Pedro and Glavine back and they pitch well and the offense is clicking, they won't lose a series in the NL at least. Take away an effective Pedro or Glavine or if the offense lulls a little and while I still think the Mets are the class of the NL they're certainly beatable. In the worst case scenario the Dodgers could have the edge over the Mets but I still think they'd be competitive. I definitely think they're the two best in the NL.
Don't know if you remember 1988 but the Mets were prohibitive favorites over the Dodgers after winning 10 of 11 in the regular season. The Dodgers won in 7.
Yeah, I agree, if the Mets get Pedro and Glavine back then they are going to be really tough for the Dodgers to beat. I just think the Mets might have too much power for the Dodgers to contend with...especially if the Mets get some quality starts from there pitchers. If Glavine and Pedro return then the Dodgers may exit the playoffs early like in 2004 against the Cards, 95 against the Reds, and 96 against the Braves. The only thing is that this 2006 Dodger team just seems to be built much stronger from top to bottom than the teams in 95 and 96. In that era, they relied too much on Piazza, Karros, and Mondesi in the middle of the lineup. With this years Dodger team, just about anybody in the lineup can hurt you in a variety of different ways.Quote:

The 1988 season was also the first year I started watching the Dodgers on a regular basis. Unfortunately I was only seven years old at the time though so I remember very little about the actual season. Its been a long time since 1988 though, and I can't wait for the Dodgers to get back to the World Series. Either way though, I have a feeling we may see some great games between the Dodgers and Mets come playoff time :)

Look at the Astros and White Sox last season. Excellent pitching all around with the White Sox pen barely being used as the starters went all the way most of the time.
I'm still crossing my fingers for Tom Glavine. He finally started to pitch really well lately and now this whole blood clot thing happened. I miss Dirty! :(
The Dodgers also have a great chance of passing the Cards for the #2 seed.

As a Dodger fan, I am actually crossing my fingers that Tom Glavine comes back as well. Basically, as a baseball fan in general, if the Dodgers do end up winning it all I want them to win it while they face the best possible competition. If they win the World Series I don't want to look back and say "Well, the Dodgers might have only won because Glavine and Martinez were hurt." Plus, its just more exciting when they face off against some of the elite players in the game.Quote:
