Alright, I got this yesterday. Finally! The PSone rev seems to be a beautiful conversion, no slowdown yet. (although holding L1 creates slowdown, very odd) Lovely game.

But now I need help, and lots of it. Can someone point me to some videos? Just something simple like the correct way to chain level 1 would get me started I think. I've become fond of the A-L ship arrangement. And I've been reading your page, Bern-D, very helpful. Thank you. Any other "basic" advice and strategies anyone has would be much appreciated.

Should I be using my laser all the time? Because that's what I seem to be doing, unless I need a little burst of speed. Is it more important to save up for the maximum bonus you get with full bombs, or to squeeze in extra hits at the bosses when the bar turns red with a "laser bomb"? I'd like to get better before I post anything score-wise.

You might want to try and hunt down the Aichi-Ken replay -- you'll need to use an emulator for that, though. It's also fake, but the strategies themselves are otherwise impeccable. Let me know if you want it, and I'll try and assemble everything you'd need for it into a single zip.

And don't use your bombs. What you want to do is stock them for a passive bomb multiplier that runs in the background. This is something that will benefit you more in the long haul, so don't expect anything to instantaneous. Also, careful control of your shot goes a long way toward preserving your chains, so jamming down on your laser all the time isn't the best of ideas. This is a bit more difficult with the A-L, and you're going to have to be all over the screen, but it's entirely possible.

That would be great, I really think seeing the game played properly would help quite a bit. Thanks for the tips too.

Aside from the one video that's on my web site, I found
no other DoDonPachi videos. I did, however, record a solid
chaining performance in level 1 so I'll have that video
prepared for you tomorrow morning at the latest. (My
brother wants to use the computer now and he stays on for
a very long time.)

Edit: Aichi-ken's method is superior to mine, but if you'd
like to see my approach anyway, let me know.

Though you will be using laser often, you need not use it
all the time. Use your laser when you want to clear out a
large group of enemies or a strong enemy. Use your shot

I've managed to complete the chain in Stage 5. As described
by SGL-HOR, this chain begins from the start of the stage
and ends at the sixth blue flyer (the same one found near
the beginning of Stage 3). It's possible to earn over 850
hits using the C-S, but with the C-L, I've only managed to
scrape up 816 hits.

My approach varies somewhat from Aichi-Ken's so if you're
having trouble mimicing his movements, you can try
learning from mine. I will try to describe my approach
later, perhaps in a day or two after I destroy the 5th boss
in one life.

By the way, in my giddiness, I've died shortly after I
completed the chain. But the parts after this chain should
be easy to perform, and I will describe this in my strategy
guide.

One annoying thing I've found when playing in TATE mode is that my TV cuts off the meter on the upper left of the screen. I'm sure I'll get past this but it's making it difficult to gauge exactly when I'll be losing my chain while learning. I'll also check out your movie when I get a chance Bern-D, but on my 56k line that likes to disconnect me that file will be fun to download. I'll try leaving it on tonight when I go to bed. Oh, and thank you for the advice.

Hey Bern

I finally caved in (geddit? hahaha!) and started playing with the popular C-S ship. Managed to score 37,104,390. I played like i was a god on st5. I'll send you the raine demo when the new version comes out or something.

I guess you still have a higher score than me (I don't count my old mame32 lame scores anymore) but I'll soon bap ya!

BAPPED! HAHA!

After playing a bit more with C-S and discovering how to beat those tricky bosses and where to position myself on st5 i managed to pull out this score after surviving all the way to the last boss. I hadn't even seen the last bits of st6 so I didn't have a clue what shot patterns and enemy formations to expect so I just bombed and dodged for all I was worth.

Score: 49,312,960
Ship: C-S
Stage: 6
Max Combo: 403

I've got it all "on tape" I haven't bothered to find the DL for the fixed raine .35b yet so i havent checked if that one runs the demos yet.

To get you started, here's the A-S replay. I don't have the
time right now to create a C-L replay, but I understand
that chaining strategies differ among the different
fighters. So I will provide a C-L one sometime in the
upcoming weekend.

Offhand, I am aware of one point where shot-powered
fighters and laser-powered ones differ in strategy. For
reference:

Check out steps 8 to 16. In the A-S replay, you will see
me destroy the two large tanks on the left side and then
the tank on the right. But the C-L will destroy these tanks
quicker so I would destroy the left one, then the right one,
then the left one, and then the extra right one.

I don't understand this one. Does it mean you should speed through bullet patterns horizontally by luck rather than searching for a gap? Is there a method to find the "right moment" to speed through the patterns? Because i have the same problem, i often die while searching for gaps. Especially at Area 4 Boss attack:[7. Scattering wedge bullets and fast blue bullets] and Area 5 at the two white tanks.

Also i saw the 667 Mill game by Aichi-Ken's. He's speeding through every kind of bullet pattern. I'm wondering if there is a special method for this or is it only training, training and training...

Hi, I'm kind of new to this board, but I've playing DoDonPachi for around a year. Anyway here's my score:

Kewing - 96165650 - C-L - MaxHit 485 - Stage 2-3

I'm still having problems in stage 5 (I had to use a bomb in the madness bit around the middle of the stage :\) and Stage 6(specially the boss). Unfortunately, I couldn't perform the entire stage 4 combo, otherwise I'd have been able to break the 100million barrier :\. If anyone just doesn't believe me because I'm new, just tell me and I'll post a link to my replay movie :). BTW, Bernard, you're doing an excellent job with your webpage. I could improve a lot my scores thanks to your strategy guide. Keep up the great work! :D

hehe so you saw it :D, at first I didn't want to post my scores on there because I thought they weren't good enough but when I got this one I thought it was time I posted it :)

Well I can do quite well the first part of that stage and the 2nd half, but I still have some problems in the green-bullet bees bit. Sometimes I get thorugh well, and some other times either I get killed or my chain gets cut off. I'm working on that these days, but the University doesn't leave me enough free time to practice it as much as I'd want ^^;. And later I have to practice stage 5 and 6 bosses, I still can't get through them without using a bomb. Gotta practice more I guess :D

I'll give an example.

It's the evil bullet barrage that has ended some of my best
games. When I'm nervous, I see bullets from the top and to
the sides. What does the nervous me do? I back down and
wait. What's wrong here?

By backing down, I'm moving with the bullet flow. I'm not
dodging anything--the bullets are still approaching me. By
waiting, I just hope the pattern glides through me. Unlike
a few patterns in Giga Wing 2, there are no safe spots to
glide through in nearly every bullet barrage of DoDonPachi.

My eyes aren't used to seeing vertically, so it's too
difficult to move up. What I should have done is move
horizontally to the right. Now, it doesn't take luck to
dodge this. It takes countless exposures to this pattern
to see what's going on.

In this case, the blue pattern is about to leave so I
shouldn't need to worry about that. I should have started
at the left edge. Because those red bullets are aimed, I
should just move horizontally to the right to quickly lead
them away from me. What I end up in the middle is a few
bullets that I can easily dodge.

Just remember: by backing down, you are either (1) moving
with the flow of bullets and dodging nothing or (2) losing
speed moving horizontally. By moving horizontally, you are
using all of the speed of your ship for evasion, so that
you don't need to do any pixel-perfect dodging as Aichi-Ken
does.

But it takes confidence to just move to the left or right.
You need foresight to know what these patterns look like
and how they move before you can evade them. Learn the
patterns, and with practice, you should be fine.

openings. As long as you keep moving, you don't need to
worry about those blue bullets

Sure :). Here it is : ) It's a Raine 0.34b Replay file. It should work fine on that version, and other versions too, but I haven't tested them by myself.As I said before I could resist without using bombs until the middle of stage 5 and short after that I got killed. I was getting too nervous. Surprisingly, I could perform a quite good combo on the next stage but when I arrived at the boss I decided to go for survival, since I haven't practiced the second loop that much (only the first stage). After getting to the 2nd loop I was too nervous and got killed sequentally like a dumb although I could resist a bit using some bombs :\. Oh yes, please ignore the game after the continue screen. After that I just wanted play for fun until the Bee boss and I forgot to stop the demo :), don't get surprised seeing how many times I get killed; 2nd loop is the HELL @_@. Enjoy it and I hope it helps in any way :)

(I beat the default high score at least..heh)

So, I've played for a day, and thanks to watching Click's hapless maneuvering, I've already broached 14 million, the problem, I won't be able to play for a week, I'm on my way to 100 million, baby! NOT just beating the game 1 cred would be enough for me regardless of score...if only I could remind myself not to think about the score when that nifty combo counter pops up in the left hand corner...

Anyone have some legit tips for taking out the second boss without any bombs? I pretty much always use one... But I want to keep the multiplier going that Kaneda kindly reminded me about... It will help me to reach 20 million and perhaps even the final stage, for once.

I always take out all four of the star-dropping turrets.... Does your proximity to the boss have anything to do with how fast he goes down?

One thing though. Typically, if you fire your laser at the
beginning of the battle, you end up with a certain madness
attack in the end. If you hate dealing with that one, delay
firing your laser for a few seconds in the beginning of the
battle. That way, you force the boss to change attacks when
it turns red later on.

Only if your aura touches the core will you deal extra
damage. But this is dangerous--if you're too close to the
boss, it will fire a long, fast wave of bullets that's
difficult to dodge.

I don't recall ever reading about that holding off on the laser bit... thanks. I'll have to try it out.

I am a goddamn retard. I died twice at the end of stage 4 on an otherwise unscathed run, then died again near the end of 6 because I didn't want to use my last bomb...I then got the final boss with

9 BOMBS!!! 9!!! That's 3 bombs and an extra life. AND DIED WITH 2 BOMBS LEFT IN STOCK and that goddamn boss was IN THE RED because I am a RETARD who thinks he's a SLICK SHIT. So anyway, the only reason I played at all is because Click got a high score, and I can't have him beating me ever...
So Bern-D, Lookout because I was damn close to your score, and now that I'm into the game I'll probably be after your score next.

Ouch, tough luck. But you should be able to surpass my
score sometime. I haven't been playing DDP since late
August, and I'm no longer interested in playing it.

I'm trying to make myself reputable on this server, but so many threads are filled with mindless junk I either get sucked down into it when I post, or try to avoid it completely.... Just want you all to know (if anyone reads this at all) that I'm not really an asshole, I love video games, and I'm looking to make friends, not ostracize X-box fanboys. Think I'll stick to the records board most of the time...

Bern, it seems like your score could easily be a million bajillion points...

Anyway, I could use some videos...Namely chians. I'm having a brain fart right now so I can't remember what I need exactly....I'll ask you later, bleh.

About the stage 2 boss...that thing has slain me too many times to count. It took about 20 games in a row (restarts included) to come up with that score this Tuesday, mostly because I couldn't kill him.

What I found to work the best was I kill the panel on the left, just the one, then move through the pink crud to the right, kill that panel, and the missile-shooting thing (so two big starts come out) If you do this quickly and efficiently, he'll still be shooting blue thin bullets. If you haven't died at all yet, you have enough power-ups enough to take him out before he goes crazy. If you attack him that way, he will shoot his spread shot with LARGE OPEN PATCHES. Do not dodge these to the sides, you can circle in the middle and keep on him at this point. Also, I'm pretty sure the center bit doesn't shoot large streams of bullets if you hit it with your Aura, only the side panels, but I'm not sure. I only did it once in a brash slovenly charge, and lived, so you might want to give it a shot during that wide spread sequence, as it's so easy to stay in the middle. Then he'll shoot blue bullets again, but by having the right missiles gone your laser doesn't get frustratingly stopped, and it makes it easier for me to dodge them. He typically dies before he shoots the fast spread shot if I attack him in this manner.

I do it this way because I HATE the MISSILES, but sometimes I am slow and the fast shot whips out, and while I used to be able to dodge it quite well this Tuesday I got reamed every time. Give it a shot if you like. I'll ask you guys later about chaining the later stages...is there any decent way to chain ANYTHING in Stage 3? Should I just go for all the bees to get a score boost? I always forget the one on the left when the big purple disc shooting crapper comes down...

I also know you can get more points killing stage 2 boss completely, I used to, but it's been tearing me so much..I described the easiest way that I found. And the center part DOES shoot a long line of bullets, so it's not safe to use your aura anywhere.

declining interest for DDP stems from playing other
shooting games in their actual form--in the arcade. I was
always playing DDP on the emulator. But after playing Giga
Wing 2 and Gunbird 2 in their actual forms, it's tough for
me to play seriously on an emulator. All I have left are
my memories...

You can make 3 small chains here. You can get about 110 at
the beginning of the stage to before the midboss, 36 from
the two blue battleships, and over 60 from the big red
battleship at the end. The first and third chains have

The bees aren't worth much. The real score boost here is
your multiplier. Don't use a bomb, don't die, and you can
see your score at around 20 million to 30 million by the

I'd love to see a video of that 110 chain, just to see how it is possible, because I've tried coming up with ways and it's baffled me.
Also, if you can do it, I'm convinced that you can chain the ENTIRE stage 2. I can 134 the beginning and 124 the middle, and there's got to be a way to link the middle part together. I just saw Click chain what would be the end of my 124 to the 160-161 I always end the stage with, so if I can just sew up that beginning part you've got the whole stage chained. Can you do it? Can you make a vid?

And one little tip, maybe, if you don't already use this, to not dying on the Stage 3 boss. Kill only the outer two of the tiny pink bullet turrets, as the big blue circles space a bit more, you get more time on target, and the pink bullets are spaced much farther apart giving you lots more room to dodge...
Or kill them all, and don't worry about preserving your combo. The hardest part is when the center turret spits the blue circle shots in a spiral pattern, right towards the end there's a very tricky bit. Don't be afraid to let go of your laser and dart all the way to the side. Good Luck.

Heh, just noticed you said stage 3 and not stage 3 boss...I think it's one of the rather easier stages...except for 2 bits, when all the little red dart shooting ships appear, i run to the front of the screen (slightly to one side) and use rapid fire shot to clear most of them, and I have room on one side to dodge adequately. The other is the purple turrets on the big red ship, but I deal with that variably, and I've been doing it well lately. It's the boss that kills me the most.

I just got a 149 HIT at the start of Stage 2 but it ended in a with single pink sprite straight through my ship... And then at the mid-boss area I got another 120 or 130+...

As for this blasted game in general, I've settled on the "it's not that hard, it's just hard to be consistent."

WOW! Special thanks for that stage 2 vid, you definitely fixed the problems I had...not that I think I'll be able to do that easily, but that's not the point, is it? :o) I'm terrible with my laser, so trying to hit that pattern you have is going to be good practice. You also hit certain parts from sides that I didn't, I tend to stay in the middle a lot more (which has its advantages on later stages, as enemies hidden on the sides will not fire bullets until you scroll sideways) Thanks a bundle!

Right now, I've switched to C-L and am trying to get a new record for that ship. Once I break that 50M score, you'll see it.

Which bosses does that "hold your fire" rule apply to? I know it applies to the 4th one definitely. Bosses one and two are no problem for me. The 5th boss' nuke attack is a pain in the ass. I know Bern-D has said something about riding the "stinger", but you have to be fast to get up there. If you can ride it carefully so the boss doesn't ram you, the nukes shouldn't hit you.

The 2nd boss might if you want to maintain laser contact
with the boss at all times, but end up with an easier
madness attack in the end. I'm unsure if you'd benefit
anyway by using the rule on the 5th boss, but KEN's replay
does it for some reason--maybe to gain a few extra points
from those bits.

I thought it was too slow at first, but it's lack of speed really helps me out in tight fields of bullets.

Anyway, DDP has been utterly destroying me the past few days I've played it for no real reason. It's like the game decided to get more difficult at random.

I don't know...I made my choice originally after playing with all the fighters and the A-L seems to be right up my alley. Keep in mind that I can't stand slow ships. I'm pretty stubborn when it comes to choosing a ship, regardless of what's popular. Example: I'm really surprised that so many people play MArion in Gunbird 2- she's too slow and the lack of a strong focused shot really bothers me. Given a choice, I always pick a speedy ship with a strong focused shot. And it doesn't get much bigger than the A-L laser.

edit- Well, I gave the old C-S another shot. While I was definitely scoring higher right away due to the almost unfair chaining ability, I found myself dying too many times due to the slow speed. The laser bomb sure is insane though. Short term, it'd be a good choice. But I think in the long run the A-L's better for me.

On a side note...I'm finally starting to understand the game. I was having trouble chaining (well, still am) until I was watching a replay on the emulator and watched the chain meter carefully. (it appears off the screen on my TV) I noticed that peppering small ships with your shot keeps the meter high, while leeching hits from a large enemy with your laser barely keeps it going. This explains why I was always breaking my chain when coming off of a large enemy.

And I finally really saw the max bomb multiplier at work....jesus. If I can just get a good run through stage 3 with it running I'll be set. Now I can see where those enormous scores come from.

Question about the stage 2 boss: Frequently towards the very end it'll shoot the pattern of large pink bullets down the middle with a cluster of blue on either side, but MUCH faster than usual. Often this causes me to die or use a bomb, which I need for that multiplier. Is there anything specific I can due to avoid having to dodge that shot other than just kill the boss asap?

Strange. If you've been firing your laser from the start of
the battle, you should get its other madness attack: a
harsher spray of blue needles. The easiest way is indeed to
damage the boss quicker, so the boss turns red in the
middle of the blue spray attack. I've described another

After a long time of exams and such, I finally could play DDP. After training for a few days in order to remember patterns and such, I decided to go for a run, but not a score one, just for surival, to see how far I could go. It soon became a quite interesting play and actually surpassed my old highscore, very strange 'cause I got killed idiotly a few times and I lost my MAX bonus twice or so. What upsets me a lot about this play is that I got so close to 100 million..... I just can't believe my last life was gone because of such a nonsense; I was in the bottom of the screen and a little grey tank that was close to me was heading towards me, I thought that it wouldn't be any problems but then it shooted just right in front of my face and boom... game over v_v. Anyways here's the score:

I guess I'll have to be morre careful with near-bottom screen enemies... :/

Finally, mission complete. First loop successfully cleared on one credit. Whew. My arms have finally stopped shaking so I can finally type.

And can you believe it? I missed my former high by a good 3 million despite clearing the game and getting a 200+ [261] hit chain on Level 2 for the first time. But I did resort to using a bomb on the Level 2 boss.... and I wasn't keeping track, but I think I missed the 200+ chain on Level 5. So that wasn't too cool.

I'm sure I'll have a clean high score run in the not so distant future.

[DDP is officially my first shooter that I have been able to one credit.]

First round cleared. I didn't reach the loop requirements, but I could care less. I decided to drop scoring and just go for survival, so I switched from C-L to C-S and an hour later it was beat. When I got to the last level with 3 lives I knew this was the one.
