DS or PSP?

The age old question has risen...

I'm going back to school in the fall and that means hour-ish train rides everyday... each way (so really 2 hours a day of train rides).

That being said, I want to get a PSP or DS to pass the time. DS has a lot of great classic games coming out for it. The new Megaman game looks great and that new Super Mario Brothers game coming out later this year makes me almost settle for a DS right now. The thing is the touchscreen seems odd.

The one great thing about the PSP is that it can be modded to play TV shows and such... which would be great to watch on a train. Can the DS do that? I honestly know little about each system.

Mostly I don't really care about what system I get, I want to get the one that is going to give me the best options in games and the best options all around (TV shows, movies or similar)

What do you say?

You can watch TV shows or movies on the DS, you just have to buy one of those flash cart hacking thing.... and you have to convert it.

I would suggest DS for now because it is cheaper, has more interesting games and a backlog of awesome GBA games.

I want to know about the DS or the PSP.

If I can get TV shows and such on the DS I might go that route as most of the games on it seem really interesting.

You made Robobo cry. Jonas, the PSP lacks the gaming library of the DS (and GBA), but it has the movie edge. If you want a gaming system, get the DS. If you want a portable multimedia device, get the PSP.

Any chance they plan on doing those 30 games in 1 type releases that were found on SNES and NES? Those things rocked.

Do you mean the ones with a bunch of terrible knock-off games? Um, I hope not. Maybe the homebrew community for the PSP will do something like that, but I doubt you'll see anything beyond that for those things.

Sorry I was confused with the Mega Man Powered Up for PSP (which has a level editor!)

I don't think it really matters which one you get at this point.
Both systems can easily handle 2 hours of use without a recharge, and both can play games, music, videos, etc.

Don't let the touchscreen scare you off the DS. There are plenty of games that don't really use it, and the ones that do will make you glad it's there.

Personally, I'd get the DSlite because it's small, the screen won't get scratched to shit, and the GBA movie player with 1GB Compact Flash card is cheaper than a 1GB MSProDuo.

Fuck it, you don't need it until fall, so why are you asking us now?

Well yeah most of the 30 games sucked but sometimes you'd get 3 or 4 which were awesome. I remember this one for SNES where you fought in the street and the cops would drive by and if you were fighting you'd get arrested. People from windows tried to drop pots on your and stuff.

The flash carts are 100% badass illegal awesomeness, but the GBA movie player (not the Play Yan) is a legit 3rd party product that uses CF flash memory to store movies, music, and NES ROMs.

Buy a DS and an $80 7" portable DVD player at Wal-Mart.

I just bought a PSP yesterday, and I really like it so far, but the DS is still the shit. Meteos, Castlevania, Mario Kart, Phoenix Wright plus Super Princess Peach, New Super Mario Bros and an incredible looking onlineTetris coming soon? Yeah. If I could only have one, it'd be the DS.
My reason for getting the PSP was the new Mega Man stuff, Tokobot, and the fact that it is a pretty badass media player. But, DS still for the win.

The DS is the greatest handheld ever. You might as well wait and get the DS Lite redesign. It has awesome games and you can play tons of awesome GBA games. Some games I recommend:

Castlevania DS
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Trama Center: Under the Knife
Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time (playing this now, it rocks)
Kirby Canvas Curse
Metos
Animal Crossing: Wild World
Nintendogs

I will have to look into the flashcart thing, I would love some NES rom action. The PSP is OK, my boyfriend has one but the games on it suck right now. His is modded and all we ever play are SNES games. He has been playing that Popocroploiosos game which looks kinda cool. All the really good games on PSP are stuck in Japan.

The DS has so much more to offer. Plus you can definitely try before you buy, if you know how to.

The PSP is good for emulation but I don't know how good Mame runs on it. What games run flawlessly and what games don't. I'm kind of ignorant on the subject. I'm sure Radiant Silvergun isn't running on it, but I am curious about different 2D fighting games from Capcom and SNK.

Ok, I read that link that Jeremy provided and I am still confused. If I want to play NES roms on my DS then I need a flash card that can connect to my DS and then directly to the computer. Can anybody who has NES roms running on their DS help me out? This has really piqued my interest.

The emulation on PSP, from what I've seen, is blah, at best. The smoothest emulation I saw on it was the NES which, really, come on.
As for playing fighting games on the PSP... Umm... Don't. :-P Even Alpha 3, which is made for the PSP and runs fantastic on the system plays like shit because of the control setup. No handheld has come even close to being a portable fighter dream like the Neo Geo Pocket was.

I'd go for the PSP because of the multi media functions. It sounds like your going to be on the train a lot and there just isnt enough games on either handheld to keep me interested for a long time. Yes the DS does have a better game selection but do your really want to play games on every trip? At least with the PSP you can just put whatever movies, music and roms on it you want.
If you dont think you'd get sick of only playing games on the train, get the DS. If you'd want other stuff to do and dont want to carry a DVD player, Ipod and a DS with you, get a PSP.

Id go with the Nintendo DS. Its cheaper than the PSP. You don't need to buy any memory sticks or whatever to save the games. It has a better library of games already, and the games on the horizon are all going to be top notch titles.

I bought an Xbox 360 and a DS within a week of each other. Since then, I have played the DS more than the 360 or any other video game console that I own. So, if you want a handheld that plays games then get the DS.

Jonas: Ask yourself these 4 questions:

1)Do you have an mp3 player?

2)Do you have a lot of movies/tv shows you want to watch on the go that you own on DVD?

3)Do you care at all about playing good games?

4)Are you on a fairly tight budget?

If you answered yes to 2 or more of these questions, get a DS Lite and a cheap portable DVD player as Roletroll suggested. Between DS and GBA games you will never run out of great games to play for 2 hours a day.

well it depends, some people wear the viel, and some don't. and i mean the viel as in cover the hear sort of thing, not the whole face and shit where you can't see anything. there are different type, some people are more extreme than others, luckily here in the UAE it's very laid back, and no one is forced to cover up like they do in SA or iran.
