Vonage

My family is thinking of switching to Vonage, because we're sick of Comcast reaming us up the ass each month. Vonage has everything we have right now, but also has a much better international calling rates (I want to hear Comcast's excuse for charging .40c/m to Iceland when Vonage can get away with .07).

The thing is, I've heard next to nothing about Vonage except for their commercials. I don't know anyone who uses it, I haven't seen any articles in any newspaper or magazine praising or criticizing it, and I can't find any websites online that have first hand accounts with Vonage (except for people bitching about deactivation fees).

I'm also worried that this might fuck up my upload/download speeds a lot. I ues torrents quite often and most of the time I upload files and seed them. I don't think a broadband phone line could really use that much upload speed, but it could happen.

I've mainly heard that their customer service sucks dick and mixed feelings over the service itself. Have you tried a google search? I remember reading reviews when I was looking up Optimum Voice.

I did production work on their television commercials with the weird talking mascots. I haven't tried it, but isn't there a case pending by regular phone companies that may make the service illegal if it is successful?

I have a friend that uses some offshoot of Vonage. It's supposedly based in Germany or something and caters to mac users. It's funny as hell when you call him. He never answers his phone, so you always get his voice mail with a recording of a girl with a heavy german accent. He gets billed in Euros LoL.

We used it at the CvC house for about 6 months, and didn't have any problems to speak of. It wasn't in my name so I'm not sure if there was billing problems or bad customer service, but the service itself was just fine. And the price is right if you need to do lots of long distance calling.

Yes there were billing problems and customer service issues that linger to this day.
