NEED HELP!!! Graphic Design Internship!!!

Finally, after being in college for 6 years (4 yrs full time and 2 years part time..fucking Fashion Institute of Tech), I'll be graduating this year. Before I can do that, I need to do an internship. Internship is for 18 credits and lasts 14 weeks and need to work 35-40 hours a week. Heres the thing. St. Johns list of companies is crap considering the list they gave me either had outdated numbers, no numbers at all, no longer there, or moved out of New York.

I emailed pratically all ad agencies, publications and some either havent responded yet, or have and stated that they arent either looking for interns, moved, or are filled.

I have to register mid-March, setup interviews, sign contracts and stuff.

Anyone have suggestions as to what other companies I can apply for? I'm running out of places to think of. Anyone in NY that works in advertising or publications? Anyone knows of someone that can help me out?

Does New York have an arts district you can walk around and hand resume's out in? Toronto does and that's what I did and I landed one of the best internships in my entire class.

Do you have any "in's" anywhere? Just knowing somebody at a company is a huge resource. They can put you in touch with who you need to talk to -- HR departments are useless for what you're trying to do, they'll just be in the way.

Nope, dont have any network connections. Thats where hopefully TNLers will come in..

As I posted on my first post, I sent emails with my resume to 30-50 companies. I'm not sitting on my ass waiting for a internship to be handed to me. Cuz obviously, it wont happen.

Thats why I'm asking TNLers for any suggestions as to companies that is related to Graphic Design as I have run out of companies that I can think of. Or if better, someone knows of someone within the field (aka networking).

If I had the opportunity to go out of NY for internship I would. But finding housing for only 14 weeks is a hassle plus, I dont know if the university would allow it. Not to mention transportation and all that stuff.

BTW, thats a very nice site.

Call all of those bastards back, stating how eager you are to get the position, SEVERAL TIMES (you can usually weed out the flaky ones you would rather not do in this process also, based on the attitudes of the people you get in contact with). Plus keep hitting back the ones that have already turned you down, as you never know when an intern might not work out for them, and they want someone NOW. Interns are really a dime a dozen, so you have to be the most eager of the bunch to get in. I'm not saying you weren't, just putting in my 2 cents.

Thats what I thought. Having an extra person to help out with no pay would be easy but its actually harder than you think. Some places I applied to either have fulfilled their spots, havent responded until mid-March/April or not looking for one at all.

Nope nothing yet. None from the companies I emailed from. I did get an email from a network thanks to cowdisease. They want to set up an interview. Unfortunately, I am on vacation and wont be back till next week.

If anyone has any other suggestions or networks, feel free to hit me up. The more the merrier!

I'm not looking for anything while I'm away. I'm on Spring break. I have a separate email for job searching and it has a auto-responder saying that I'm out of town. This vacation thing has been planned for over a month or two.

Any company that gets that auto-respond will throw your resume in the trash. There's so many people exactly like you looking for jobs they dont need to wait a week for you to get back. You really dont know how job searches work do you?

That is my concern. You've probably just made the worst first impression you could have made. That company took the time to respond to the e-mail and resume you sent them and you weren't even there waiting for it. I'd say your chances of entry in to that job at slim to none.

I agree with diff and Andrew, bandit. Setting an auto-responder for your job email was a bad move and you should turn it off immediately.

Not even about the auto-responder (though that is laughably ridiculous), companies expect you to get back to them *NOW*. Like I said there are hundreds if not thousands of graphic design students in the city of New York looking for internships, they have no time to waste on someone on vacation. They dont give a shit if you are on spring break and its your vacation because a lot of those other students are spending their spring break *looking for internships*. It is cutthroat. Not to mention whoever hooked you up looks like an asshole when they get your auto-response or no response.

They have the job, you are at their mercy. I was having phone problems during my job search and companies generally blew me off if I called a day late even if it wasnt my fault.

This isnt a job where I'll be working to get paid. This is an internship but I should still treat this as a real job. Considering all the jobs I had, I never had to wait. So yes, this is sort of new to me.

Technically, I never contacted them or emailed them. Cowdisease was nice enough to talk to them to see if they were in need of an intern. Again, this is internship as stated in the topic title. I'm not looking for pay or an actual full-time position.

Awesome, break a leg man.

It's been my experience in the design field to dress up but don't wear a suit and tie either. Creative types, depending on the disposition of the job and boss of course, don't really like suits and ties. Don't dress like a slob either.

I didn't put the two together at first. I did a search thinking it was a design studio or something. I don't know, Time Magazine may appreciate if you dressed up. I don't know about that it's a tough one. They don't dress up at Toro Magazine up here, or Canadian Living or conservative ones like that, but I'm not sure. Time is much bigger and much much more conservative. Bring a tie with you just in case and wear a blazer.

There's a few ways to look at it.

Generally accepted knowledge nowadays is that its best to dress similar to what is standard dress at the office. Im not sure this is the case in my experience. Myself and all other candidates I saw wore suits. I wore a suit to the interviews for the job I have now, and the dress is business casual there. But I work in the financial sector.

As such I disagree with the generally accepted knowledge today and agree with you. This stuff changes so often anyway.

Yes. The problem is that you can have a job interview at a design studio where people are wearing torn jeans and t-shirts and be a complete fish out of water by wearing a suit and tie. I don't contend that he should wear ripped jeans and a t-shirt, but something middle of the line (dressy casual) will probably be best for this studio.

Then the next interview he has could be at a very conservative magazine where people do wear ties and fancy overcoats. Time Magazine is probably in this category.

Bandit, wear a suit to your Urban Latino interview. Although the dress code is casual, it's better to present yourself in a professional manner.

Yea, thats what I'm going to do for both. I need to present myself in a well manner regardless of environment and how their dress code is.

I agree, I was just pointing out how in some studio environments a tie is a turn off (dressing professionally without a tie isn't impossible). Obviously not the case here.

Well, I had my first interview with the hookup from cowdisease. Everything went well and I was there for only like 20mins. I got the internship. Need to talk to chairperson about it.

I have interview with Time Inc. this Wednesday. Hopefully it works out. Regardless, I have an internship for the summer.

Time to register for it and be even more broke with this high as tuition.

Thanks to cowdisease, this is the coolest internship and most interesting. They had a photoshoot for the next issue (music theme) and a bunch of artists came..NORE, Pitbull, Notch and some upcoming stars or current stars (just never heard of them), Chingo Bling, Julius Cesar, Tres Coronas, Latin Fresh, Otto Sanchez. I started at 10:30am and didnt finish till 9pm. I had to run a errand to get a charger that was left behind at the last photoshoot for Aventura so I didnt get a chance to take a pic with NORE but I did get Pitbulls, Notchs and Chingo Bling (w/auto). I got sick too. Came home and had a 101 degree fever, couldnt breathe or anything but well worth it.

I'll post pictures when I get home.

Urban Latino Magazine gave me a bunch of stuff to do already..logos, I had to do a invitation flyer for Nina Sky but Heinekin canned it since they only want a venue that carries Heinekin Light, I'll probably be working on a 6-8 page spread on underground artists in other countries.

Thanks again cowdisease.

I cant wait for MAD Magazine. I should be starting that on July 17-August 25.

Chingo was mad cool. He was the last person and since hes repping for Texas, we needed him. His missed his flight and he was put on standby so he didnt get into the studio till like 8:00pm. The interviews will be on the website. I'll see when they'll be up. I think the website is being reworked.

You mean the ones they gave me for free? If so, no not yet. Why?

Jorge and everyone is mad cool. Since there is no workspace for me, they put me downstairs with Thrust360. Fritz is a pretty cool guy also. Dont talk to him much.
