So um, i'm not proficient or anything with InDesign (though i do lie about being so on my resumé and cover letters!), but i figure i can take anything it throws at me. Quark feels so outdated, even compared to InDesign CS2! I can't import .ai files? How am i supposed to use this garbage? Convert to jpeg and not be able to use bezier curves? Fizzle on that!

comments and criticism wanted! i had drop shadow on it, but i thought it looked silly, like a guy who just discovered drop shadow put a drop shadow on it because it looked neat. Drop shadow is the new lens flare, maybe!
i think i might do the rest of the pic in illu too, i just wanted to make a card-type for now. or i might get some transfer paper and transfer it to water color paper and watuh coluh it, since it's been years and years since i've water colored. I don't know yet!
Needs maybe a little grey oval shadow to anchor her to the sidewalk, other than that, neat!
Maybe keep it stuck to the concrete? It feels like it should be warping as it hits the grass. Or, just trace her outline onto the fence and draw back a shadow onto that! Whatever looks right to you, ultimately. :D

She still kind of looks like she's hovering above the ground. Some of her shadow is below her feet, which adds to the fact she looks like she's floating.
I like that last one, Finch. Looks cute! Kind of like a pop-up book!
I almost feel like you should print her out seperately now and rig up a little folded up piece of paper or tiny spring to attach it to the cart, so it pops out when opened. It's fine as is though!
If you put it that way I agree actually. But you still may want to try messing around with it some more to make it look like she's actually connected to the sidewalk for the sake of learning technique.
i made the last one as a joke! It's drop shadow and what better way to be a 21st century graphic artist than use drop shadow! but... i like the way it looks. The pop up idea is splendid! I might do that!

And I'd put it off center, to her left/behind her (camera right), with the front edge at the front edge of her right foot and the back edge extending out from her a bit.

What type of freelance stuff are you usually doing, Finch?
graphic design stuffs. I did some concept boards for a movie company last year, and now i'm making greeting cards. Nothing too fancy, mostly making silhouettes out of vectors. i think they're catered to old peeps. There's nothing like rushing to meet a deadline, though, best feeling in the world when you actually make it.
Just save it as an EPS file. It converts the data in to a format that's more easily read by post script files printers use to compile data in to their processes. In illustrator when you first save a file you can choose EPS, too, in the drop down selection box. PDF, AI and EPS, etc are all there (PDF files are perfect for sending proofs to clients).Quote:

Me, like most people, came out of school as a designer who could make something look pretty but couldn't send it to the printer without issues coming up because I ignored the bare-bones of design behind the aesthetics. Through practical experience I've become very good at both and it works out. When I make a mock-up on the computer of how I want something to look in the end I can get it there and troubleshoot issues if something goes wrong. When you master this you will be an incredibly useful illustrator. Creative skill + technical know-how and application = win. You'll never be unsure if you can produce a piece again because you'll have the confidence to do it.
If you need to know something just PM me and I'll try to help you out as best I can. Dyne also knows a lot about it. He's a prepress guy professionally, I believe.
Thanks for the offer, Drew. I'll be sure to take you up on it when i need it. They don't teach you any of this in a Sequential Art major, but then they really don't teach you much of anything. I've learned a lot this week in printing and Illustrator simply by working for this guy. This job was about 5 years beyond my experience level so i had to learn fast!

Wah. So i fixed the issues with the frog mostly. Thinking that since it was drawn in vectors it'd be easy to work with, i tried dropping it on a black bg to go with the rest of my site, which left some ugly white lines. Then i tried saving it as a transparent gif, which promptly shat on me. Guess i should have thought about that earlier, but come on, shouldn't this kind of thing be easier to do in 2008? I'm debating whether it would be easier to just convert everything to a white color scheme and redo everything entirely or to manually go in and get rid of that shit.
Fireworks CS3, btw, is a real dog. It runs great unless you try to open, preview, save, or close, at which point it just seems like my compy will burst into flames. Is this bullshit even intel native? Fuck you Adobe, for releasing something that i would have been annoyed with in 1999.
