How is this popular? How are they "presenting" some crazy-ass, convention center-filling LAN party? I just don't get it. At all.

You think the comic is bad? Go stroll the forums, its fans are scariest bunch of people on the net. God forbid you mention that its just a rip-off of Penny-Arcade and PVP.
Then there is the whole "premium content" crap..
http://www.checkerboardnightmare.com.../20051201.html
At least it looks like crap so the discerning can get away unscathed without reading it.
I try to read it, but it just doesn't take off.
Along with CAD I would toss in PvP, Sinfest, and, well, 90% of the webcomics out there. It's probably easier making a list of the ones that are actually worth reading, to be honest.
That latest comic was a biggest load of shit ever.
I didn't even notice a punchline in it.
Perry Bible Fellowship is the best.Quote:

Good call. I'm pretty fond of http://www.overcompensating.com/ , http://www.qwantz.com , and http://www.dieselsweeties.com myself.
I liked early 8-bit theater, but I stopped reading it after it got some sort of story or some such nonsense.
The thing I dislike about CAD is how he slanders and abuses his fans. Some kid made his comics in to a video for a class project and he threatened to sue him if he didn't pack it away. The video wasn't good or anything, but if a fan likes you enough and appreciates your comic enough to do that you should encourage him.
I think his comic gets a lot of unnecessary hate lobbed on it, but in a world where Penny Arcade exists I don't see how his comic is so popular.
Perry Bible Fellowship is the best comic online (although the latest 3 haven't been that hot).
Oh and also www.robobo.com
Really I keep up with three webcomics: Achewood, Perry Bible Fellowship and Penny-Arcade. Achewood is my favorite but PBF wins for funniest comic I've seen in a while:

It was bound to happen.

Actually, they're both right up there for me. Difficlt to say which I like better.
whiteninjacomics is teh funny
whiteninja is hit or miss, but when it hits oh my does it hit.
Is it VG-Cats? I can't imagine anything worse than that.Quote:

I would fathom to guess Megatokyo -- just thinking of it makes me want to peel the skin from my body. People here go on about bad webcomics, but that is the worst and I am somewhat surprised no one has mentioned it. The TNL collective is probably traumatized from their f-chan days when they actually read it.Quote:

I read about 13 webcomics on a semi daily basis. CAD is not one of them (shit art, not funny). Nor is SluggyFreelance (I'm left confused/angry), nor Megatokyo (omg the art sucks. How can you even tell people apart?), though I used to read all three.
I love Dominic Deegan, for humor Diesal sweeties, MacHall, Goats, AlienlovesPredator. bunch others. Waspi Square and Zebra Girl for some excellent art, very distint styles. MacHall also.
Also, I'm not linking because I dont care and I need to run out the door. I'm sure you guys are bright enough to use google. :D
I read about six or seven White Ninja comics. They were so devoid of humor I may never laugh again.
Dr. McNinja is awesome though.
I didnt even know what VG-cats was... but man... shitty comic + furry art = death.
MegaTokyo... not read that in years (but it was lame).
I was referring to Robobo FYI.
Dinosaur Comics remains my favorite.
I read Megatokyo just out of habit now. It's never been funny (don't think anyone reads it for a laugh) and I'm not sure of what the story is any more, but I like the art. I stopped reading the rants a long time ago and never went near the forums. VG Cats will do a good game parody here and there, Applegeeks and MacHall are some of the best out there in terms of art and coloring (fun read too). Other (non web)comic I read is Get Fuzzy. PvP is alright and Penny Arcade is hit or miss, but I like his art style. Skimming the rants on PA is about all you need to do, there can be some good links and game impressions buried underneith the Wachowski Brothers style babble.
mcdonalds vs mcninja is fucking amazing.
I'd also like to submit the following as finalists for Worst Webcomic Ever:
Pokey the Goddamned Penguin
Striptease
User Friendly
Others mentioned like qwantz, VGCats, and MT are certainly contenders, though. I have qwantz.com adblocked, and diesel sweeties will probably be next if I ever get back to wasting time on toothpaste-for-dinner's LJ image page again.

As for Megatokyo, I read it for a while when it was more of a jokey comic and not this big faggy story that it developed into. I also hate. hate Megatokyo fans with a passion.
Yeah, if they would update more than twice a month.Quote:

I've never read MegaTokyo and don't intend to. I do have On The Rocks, White Ninja, Penny Arcade and PVP on my bookmarks list. They are my favorite. I check the Perry Bible Fellowship once in awhile but it's so hit and miss lately I've started to get out of the habit.
PVP is probably one of my favorites because it continues on every day, but his humour starts to get a bit obvious. The earlier (year 1, 2 and 3) PVPs were the best, and what got him noticed in the first place.

I honestly think people on TNL and a lot of people in general just don't get web comics. Some people bash PVP, PA, VG Cats and even Ctrl Alt Del but they provide quick entertainment. They aren't meant to have you rolling in laughs on the floor. They are ALL super popular. Maybe just maybe some people around here need to lighten up and realize that so many things should just be enjoyed rather than 'critiqued' and 'skewed for opinion!'.
I dunno, I think most people come to realize this. Tons of people say this movie sucks or that movie sucks... but most of the time a lot of other people completely enjoy those movies for what they are and the movies make money.
If you take the 1/4 negatives and ignore them, the 3/4 positive sound so much better.
Sadly, ignorance is a hard thing to do unless you don't mean to.
That "On the Rocks" is terrible. It's like a less-focused Family Circus, and I mean that in the worst way possible.
I think Dinosaur Comics has elicited more laughs from me than any other, and the quality ratio is extremely high. I don't even notice he uses the same images every time...he's really pretty brilliant working within those limitations. White Ninja is either brilliant or terrible, but at least that's something.
Found this one checking the links at qwantz.com. Mostly bizarre or lighthearted but some gold in there. http://www.hingos.com/patches/
I like PVP a lot, I don't think it should be lumped with trash like PA and Ctrl-Alt-Del.
Dinosaur Comics is really good, too. And Sam and Fuzzy =D

Edit: Also, I think you misunderstand web comics. They are just comics on the web. Most comics are fucking horrible. You want to write the Garfield of webcomics, knock yourself out but when you post it on these forums and ask for opinions people are going to shit on it. Myself, I'll stick to reading Get Fuzzy, Boondocks, Pearls Before Swine, and the other few comics that are actually worth reading. These comics and stuff like Calvin and Hobbes have proven that you can provide quick entertainment that isn't fucking awful.
Also, I looked at a few On the Rocks strips and it was actually painful to read.
You had a pretty good argument till you mentioned these.Quote:

What speaks is volume, and whether we think CAD is good or not is irrelevent. A lot of the CAD hate IS from the fact that he's so successful at what he does. If he didn't people would just never go back there. Is it a measure of quality content? Probably not, but he provides a service to people who enjoy it and that's all you can say about it aside from "I don't like it, it's shit."Quote:

What they provide is a quick bit of "hey, I recognize what they're discussing!" self-affirmation. Penny Arcade can sometimes do something funny with a videogame (though they've been pretty bad lately), but most of them think that mentioning a videogame in and of itself is all that's needed.Quote:

I like PVP a lot.
I'm just going to come out and say this:
I enjoyed Calvin and Hobbes quite a bit, but going back and re-reading it shows that it too was not funny. At all.
It is still a great story of a boy, his imagination and his pet tiger, but it is never, ever, funny.
Fuck you, his snowmen are still, and always will be, hilarious.
That said, it always seemed more charming than funny to me.
I will give you the snowmen, but yes, charming is the word.Quote:

Wait that's a bad example... give me a few minutes. Maybe a few hours. Days, give me a few days to find one Master.
Okay there is nothing good about CAD.
That pretty much sums up how I see all videogame webcomics.
I agree, PVP is pretty good. Good charactizations generally. His style is clean and attractive. Most are just above-average amusing, but never seems to have a total stinker which I think is pretty commendable.Quote:

The blog on the PA site is interesting; the one guy is definitely a skilled writer, and seems to enjoy working with the language. I think he tries too hard sometimes though, and ladles his point with so much verbosity it comes off as pretentious. All the imitators don't help either.
If I were in a room with Master I would wait a few minutes after his C&H comment and then slap him.
That's a dirty damn lie!Quote:

The problem with most web-comics is they are more like a re-telling of an inside joke two lamers thought was hilarious.
C&H is timeless, and will be remembered long after CAD is forgotten. PA may be the only game-related web comic that actually hits now and then, but you sure as hell can't count on it.
If you don't laugh at Calvin & Hobbes' antics, comic strips may not be for you.
That's a clever idea for a strip, but the delivery draws out and makes me want to die. If that strip was 3 panels long and just ended with "Dude, lay off the Fight Night." it would be fine.Quote:

Seriously though, get off it. Calvin & Hobbes is pretty much the only daily strip that matters.
T-Rexes in F-14's, people. T-Rexes in F-14's.
Having to be the onion in the nutrition play at school is funny. Asking Susie what she is and having her reply, "Fat" is funny. Getting the zipper of the onion costume jammed and having to shout your one line from the bathroom is funny. I'm laughing right now thinking about it.
Some people like Calvin and Hobbes and some people like Garfield. We all know who we'd rather associate with.
I'm a Peanuts man myself.
I knew some of you guys had neither hearts or souls.
