Curiously, only Sega Genesis games were mentioned as planned for the Virtual Console system in the deal with Sega (um, hello? Master System? Saturn? Game Gear? 32X?!?), but the partnership promises that many of the best out of the Genesis' 1,000+ gaming library will be available for the Revolution. Individual deals will have to be worked out with publishers for titles to be released on the Revolution, but with a growing interest in classic gaming, publishers and license owners will hopefully be fast to get on-board with Genesis support. And considering that most of the TurboGrafx-16's games released were published and/or developed by Hudson and NEC, it seems that the vast majority of games for the system will automatically fall into that partnership without much more licensing work from the company.

With NES, SNES, N64, and now Genesis and TG-16 on-board, the Revolution has got years of gaming already ready to play as soon as it launches later this year. Look for more news on supported systems and licensed games for the Nintendo Virtual Console as things develop.

Nowhere does it say that 1,000 Genesis games are coming to the Revolution, before anybody decides to think that. It says some of the "best" of the Genesis' 1000+ library will be coming to the Revolution.

I don't believe the Genesis ever had that many games to begin with. Maybe if you include every MD, hack, bootleg, and homebrew game.

It's a pretty phenomenal feature if you can pretend to be a normal human who would just like the option to play an old game when the mood strikes, rather then someone who posts on TNL and has twelve consoles hooked up to three RGB monitors.

I think people who post on TNL are far more likely than "normal people" to want to play a bunch of really old games. And far more likely to spend actual money on them as well.

I think you're right. I overlooked that.

however between the Megadrive, Genesis, PC-Engine, TurboGrafx-16
(not even counting the NEC and SEGA CD formats) there are well over 1,000 games

Because they outgrew gaming. They might fuck around with emulators for nostalgia, but they aren't going to drop $200 on a system to play SNES and Genesis games.

yeah but to get to play them on my tv means either modding my Xbox or building a small PC with a good tv out card dedicated to just mame and such
which is doable but I'm really lazy at times so to beable to download them sounds good specially if theres stuff like Drac X or other rare games on it but that's me

For me the old games don't hold much appeal without something "new" added to them.

I setup a number of emulators on my PSP because I thought I'd be playing the classics that I used to love years ago and I think this would be true if I were stuck in a time warp.

The reality for me is I now have a hot rod PC that can play anything, an Xbox 360 w/ 50 HDTV and a PSP. These are all current generation meaning they all get current generation games which even with EA in the mix, are better than games I played 10 years ago.

The only exception to this for me is the Live Arcade games like Smash TV and I really only want to play that multiplayer over Live since that's something I was never able to do before.

If they can do vintage games with a current gen twist of some sort, then I'm interested ... if not I have better current gen games to spend my time and money on.

This won't interest me any unless it includes turbo duo games. I can already play sega and TG-16 games on my comp or the original console. Plus on my PC I can sprite rip, record music/sounds and use save states.

Are you kidding me? How could SMW get easier? I'm seriously curious. It was never a very difficult game to begin with. I found getting 100% on every level in Yoshi's Island to be far more difficult, and from what I recall, that didn't get messed with on GBA.

I remember reading in a Reggie Joystiq interview that he commented that people would like to play the classics without any enhancements, so even if Nintendo was stupid enough to add voices to Super Mario Bros., there should be an option to play the game in its original state.

You know what would seal the deal for the Revolution classic games download? Ape the Xbox LIVE concept and provide Co-op and Vs. online gamplay for these old games. That would give the Revolution the strongest advantage over emulation. I'd pay money to play Double Dragon 2, Super Spike V-Ball, and Gunstar Heroes online with other TNL people.

Yeah that's the worst analogy I've ever heard. You're right that it was changed from the original...but this is also the way it worked in SMB3. Of course, SMW always had the item boxes, too.

Maybe like Arthur in SGNG getting hit with special armor and going down to regular armor. I don't think it's bad to scale back one level of powerup per hit, but it will make the game easier.
