Boardgamegeek is an excellent source for info. I've used it several times to research gifts and it's never failed me.
anyone plays Age of Empires 3? It is 30% off at B&N, and eyeing that retro looking Risk too...
Yeah. I've ran into Boardgamegeek a lot searching through Google. Great site. Got the Fishermen of Catan and the Event Card Deck in the mail the other day. Using the Event cards slows the game down and definitely not as exciting when you're not rolling the dice. I like the effects that comes with the cards though so currently, we took out all the non-effect cards and we'd draw an event card whenever a 2 or 12 is rolled which works pretty nicely thus far. The Fishermen of Catan is definitely my favorite of the two micro-expansions. It makes building a starting settlement at the ports more worthwhile and it speeds the game up nicely.
I have never played catan. I've always wanted to try a game though.
Stopped by my favorite game store today, Greenfield Games in Greenfield, Mass. Picked up Trailer Park Wars and Pandemic (I think I can get my girlfriend to play Pandemic since it's co-op). Pandemic is a game where the players are fighting plague outbreaks across the globe, trying to contain them before the entire population is wiped out. Trailer Park Wars is made by the same people that did Redneck Life (which is a blast at parties) so I took the plunge. The goal is to collect the most plastic pink flamingos by building the trashiest trailer park while blowing up neighboring trailer parks.
I saw some interesting-looking new games that I'm going to research on BGG. Apparently there's now a Munchkin board game called Munchkin Quest (I'm sure it'll get spammed to death with expansions, just like the card game) and a really cool looking Bladerunneresque game called Android. I'd buy Android in a heartbeat, but supposedly each game takes 4 hours and it's incredibly complicated. Those aren't dealbreakers for me, but they are for everyone I play games with, which I guess makes them dealbreakers for me.
I love to see people getting into Pandemic. I really like that game, because sometimes co-op is a good way to keep game-playing friends happy. Starcraft games can run a long-ass time like that Android game apparently does, and when you're playing by ear while someone else has a good strategy, you'll basically get your ass kicked around the board for hours. While it's a fun game when everyone's operating on the same level, it can definitely get frustrating for those on the receiving end of it and I prefer much shorter games generally.
Catan is wonderful and very easy to pick up. I need to get a copy of it, I haven't played it in a while. Also great for quick play, and I don't know if I mentioned it here, is the revised Risk that came out last year. Objectives make it possible to play a relatively quick yet satisfying game. I still like 2210 better, but this is far more reasonable without planning a game ahead of time.
I need more co-op gaming suggestions. My friend's wife is really whiny and a sore loser so, since he has always been the lynchpin of my boardgaming, I need to find more co-op shit so we can get her to play.
Boo @ marriage btw.
Not a boardgame, but I love playing fluxx. There have been some intense games that I have played.
