Unlike most hex grid strategy games Nectaris focuses on strategy and tactics rather than unit stats and realism. Realism is, in fact, eschewed in favour of a fanciful plot, with tanks and planes fighting for dominance on the surface of Earth's moon.

It's much easier to learn than Nintendo's popular Advance Wars, not being bogged down with frivolous features like commanders with different skills and special attacks. Nectaris is also very hard on the player, with the odds stacked against the player on every map. Unlike Advance Wars' endless battles of attrition, Nectaris demands that players use strategy and terrain to their advantage from the very first stage. Playing your units against the CPU head-on is the quickest way to end the game. Players must instead use field effects, called "Zone of Control", to surround and weaken enemies, and boost the offensive and defensive capabilities of allies. (See NFG Nectaris Guide)

Nectaris is a game that cries out for a DS release. It could make especially good use of the DS' dual screen architecture. I imagine being able to tap a unit on the bottom screen and seeing its details on the top, or scrolling around the zoomed-in map on the bottom and seeing the whole battlefield on top.

And the wireless capabilities! Nectaris has always had a two-player option, but hinking about wireless or (dare I say it) internet multiplayer makes me weak in the knees.

And then the extras. The virtually unlimited storage afforded by the DS carts could easily see all the maps from the PC Engine and Playstation versions as well as the extra units from the incredible Neo Nectaris bundled into one package. The DS is such an ideal platform for this game that it is nigh criminal for Hudson to not release this game. It's easy on the resources and there's a guaranteed audience of old fans, and the success of Advance Wars has created an awareness of the genre, with new fans looking to scratch an itch.

Come on, Hudson, how about it?

but NEITHER AW:DS nor Daisenryaku DS can satisfy my craving for a Nectaris ~ Military Madness game.

with the recent announcements of Hudsons PC-Engine ~ TurboGrafx-16 and CD-ROM2 games being playable on Revolution, which will include the original Nectaris ~ Military Madness (and perhaps the sequel Neo Nectaris) I hope this sparks enough interest to do a NEW game for the series on DS or even Revolution.

when did they say cd-rom 2 games will be on the rev? i thought it was only hu-card games?

I loved Nectaris. Never played the PS one, though. Always been curious about it. Was it any good?

I dunno, I fondly remember Military Madness, but it really is a pretty simple game. They'd really have to add complexity for it to stand up to the other strategy games in the DS lineup.

I didn't get Neo Nectaris either, but I remember it getting alot of 7/10s at the time. Nobody was blown away by it.

Advance Wars made Nectaris obsolete.

Nectaris is fun, in fact, the PS1 is pretty good too. But Dual Strike is hard to beat, I would love to see Daisenryaku translated for here. I doubt it though, but heck, if Xbox can get one, maybe it is a possibility!

not sure about SUPER CD-ROM2 or Arcade Card CD games, but on pcenginefx board someone said that CD-ROM2 is a brand and it should include all the CD games. not certain about that, but at least normal CD-ROM2 games will be playable on Revolution somehow (download or using the actual CDs).


the original Necaris ~ Miliatary Madness was by far the best.

Neo Nectaris was good, but not as good as the original.

Playstation Military Madness: Nectaris was okay. but the loading times were hell and the 3D battle animations were crap.

but still I'm glad to own all of the Nectaris games.

The DS is just *BEGGING* for one.

Yeah, I agree. And I really like Advance Wars (all of 'em). PS1 Nectaris got to be insanely difficult through the course of the campaign and Nectaris'/MM's greatest weakness might be the fact that at the end of the campaigns there ends up being only one way to win.

The Xbox version was just so plain and hard to get into. The Saturn version (Iron Storm-US) was much better.

I strongly disagree. If you're into hex based WWII games, this game is incredible.

While we're talking about these kinds of games, PSP owners might want to keep an eye on Field Commander. It's almost a total rip off of Advance Wars, but hey, at least they picked a good game to copy. Unlike AW, though, this can be played online, even to the point of playing a game via e-mail.

I just got done reviewing it for the next issue, and it's a really good game. Though, the entire time I was playing, the game (presentation wise) totally felt like G.I. Joe - they should have gotten the liscence for the game. I guess, though, it would have been impossible to actually hit each other when your units fired, and you'd always win by default in the end.

Iron Storm was terrible.

There's so many good turn-based strategy games on the PC that you AW fans would love but you ignore because they're on the PC. I dug AW more than any GBA game I bought (not saying much) but honestly Ive played better.

Now, the turn-based wargame genre has descended into the same circle of hell that rhythm games, shmups, and fighters have - making them exclusively for the hardcore, that is.

But there are tons of old games that would rock your face off.

Most of the stuff from the SSI Five Star Generals series is aces (the exceptions being faggy Fantasy General and Star General). My personal favorite is People's General.

Steel Panthers is another great, and you can D/L the full game off FilePlanet. Combat Mission and Strategic Command are other good ones.

One that gets a lot of praise that I haven't played are the Operational Art of War series.

There are others, just go to the Wargamer website and look around.

Outside of what g0zen mentioned (all good), there are obviously the Civ games (4 is amazing), HOMM2/3, Jagged Alliance 2, Sid Meier's Gettysburg! (its real time, but w/e), Ur-Quan Masters (free remake of Star Control 2 based on the 3DO rev: http://sc2.sourceforge.net/), et. al. The Warlords series has high praise, I never got into it. Moonbase Commander rules and needs to be on XBLA multi (I would consider buying a 360 for it), TOAW is great as are most of Talonsoft's games.

Space Rangers 2 is finally coming out here, I think it looks awesome (a lot like a modern SC2), but with Oblivion + Civ4 + so much other shit Im just gonna wait.

Not all of these games are like, "war games", but neither is AW really, theyre just intensely addictive and awesome turn-based strategy games (like AW).

Ah, yeah, it's pure wargames that I have the least experience in. I've been eating up the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series recently, and Civ2 is a favorite.

I have been meaning to play JA2 for years and years. I should go order a copy.

I have read that Hearts of Iron is a great Hex/wargame, but I have not tried it myself. I like simple wargames, like Nectaris and AW/Iron Storm. I know there are better on the PeeCee, but I just can't get into them like I could with the console counterparts.

If you're going to play Hearts of Iron, get part II. It's far better.

FYI, the Cold War expansion of HoI2 is coming out soon.

This is officially my favourite TNL thread ever. <--turn based strat game whore.

X-Com is incredible by the way, though it's not a pure turn-based strat game. If you haven't played the original, please please go do so.

I agree that Military Madness (the original) was more fun than advance wars, even though all the AW's are indeed great.

Now I'm off to purchase/DL all the games mentioned in this thread!

I could not disagree with you more. Advance Wars does not have the more 'advanced' hex-based movement, and more importantly, the ZOC ~ zone of control, where you can surround enemey units, making them weaker, and your own forces stronger. your units next to each other supports their defence and offense, making them more powerful.

I nearly had a freaking heart-attack and sh|t my underwear when I saw his page, thinking that this was coming out on DS~ Sigh!

but he has the right idea, thus the reason I made this thread.

I also agree that Nectaris ~ Militar6y Madness was better than AW. I love AW and I love AW 2, but MM was so much simpler. The similarities are there. Own a base, create soldiers and weapons from said base, own the map. But MM has Zone of Control. If you surround a base or vehicle, your chances of winning that battle increase. I remember surrounding a base with two tanks, a plane, and a soldier. I took it over in one shot. Not four turns. Sadly at the same time I left my main base alone and they took it over ... and it was GAME over. Yes it was stupid, but when I had a shot the next time I didn't make that same mistake. My point is that with ONE move in MM you could screw it all up. In AW it was a bit more leniant. You can mess up, but if your Commander is powered up. You can change the course you were headed and if you make the right decision ...win the map. MM that would not happen. You f up, YOUR F'ED!
