Official Thread Of The 2006 NBA Playoffs

Holy crap, Mark Cuban just gave every single person at the last Mavs game free airline tickets. That's 19 000 tickets. All people got at the last Raptors game was to watch their team get lambasted by Jeff Foster.

Anyway, playoffs start this weekend, and in honor of this event, here is a very special link:

My 1st round predictions:

Detroit-Milwaukee: The Bucks have basically been playing like they don't give a fuck for the last two months. If they win a single game they can call it a moral victory. I'm not predicting any moral victories.

Miami-Chicago: Bulls are tougher than people give them credit for, but Dwayne Wade is totally going to melt their freaking faces off. Eastern Conference belongs to the Chicago next few years, though.

New Jersey-Indiana: Screw you, Vince Carter! Pacers just because nobody with a soul can ever cheer for the Nets. Except Jay-Z

Cleveland-Washington: LebronLebronLebronLebron

San Antonio-sacramento: This series hinges on how many San Antonio players Ron Artest can eat.

Phoenix-Los Angeles Lakers: Kobe goes off for 60 in every game, and the Lakers get swept.

Denver-Los Angeles Clippers: E.T.-Phone-Home is gonna have 12 assists a game passing to Brand alone, and the Thuggets will head off to a summer of drive bys and turf wars (or 4 months in a hyperbaric chamber for Cotton Camby).

Dallas-Memphis: Memphis makes it 28 years in a row of getting knocked out in the first round. That plan of putting together a team of nice-guy college stars who make mediocre NBA players sure is paying off in spades.

As always I'm rooting for the Lakers (except for last year when they didn't even make it). Realistically, though, once they lose to the Suns, I'm hoping the Suns will take it all.

The Suns are going to run the Lakers off the court. LA doesn't have the shooters to keep up with them, and they aren't strong enough defensively to slow the tempo.

I expect the refs to give Kobe every call an then some, though. He'll be taking like 30 free throws a game, it'll be disgusting. But even if Amare and Kurt Thomas aren't playing, I don't see the Lakers pulling this one out.

But...they don't have anybody with a reliable post-up game. Somehow I don't see the Lakers outscoring the Suns by running the offence through Kwame Brown and Chris Mihm. They'll stick with the triangle like they always have, imo.

Maybe it's not actual attendance but just tickets sold. That would be gay IMO. If it WAS that then the relevant stat, as Yoshi's pointed out a bunch, would be total revenue.

The attendance is how many people actually care to show up to the game. Which is what I find interesting.

I don't even think it's tickets sold. The NBA is known for inflating attendance figures. If you watch an average Hawks game, it's just empty. And it's not like 10 000 people just decide not to show up every single night.

Nash should repeat as mvp, imo. He had a better season with a worse team.

Man, that Chicago-Miami game was alot of fun. Shaquille looked like it was 1998 again, except now he can hit free throws. I think my prediction of Wade killing them is gonna be off, though. I read yesterday they held him to 24% during the season, and Duhon was awesome on him tonight.

My Lebron prediction was right on though - triple double in his first playoff game? Nice! Can't wait for Lakers-Suns tomorrow.

As much as I dislike Ginobili, that situation made me dislike him even more (which I didn't think was possible). He's one of the dirtiest players in the NBA, throwing his elbows into people on a regular basis, but is never sanctioned whatsoever. Artest shouldn't have been suspended, but since he did, Ginobili should have been too.

Another year, another NBA playoffs, another person whining about San Antonio having the dirtiest players in the league. Go figure.

And you know something, I know you guys don't watch the Spurs play during the regular season, you only see highlights of them on your hometown sportshow where whether you live in a big market or a small market you probably are in an NBA market where your hometown team is talked up.

Then the majority of what else you see and hear is about the other big markets and then the teams with the best records. Since SA is a small market but they have good records, most places media shits on them. They're a/the team to beat from nowheresville with a bunch of either a) boring "stars" or b) dirty underlings. What a crock of shit.

That so many people buy into it never ceases to amaze me.

As proof of this b.s. the first two rounds of last years playoffs where serious hard fouls were being committed left and right against the Spurs, and opposing coaches were crying to the media to try to get some favor with the officials while the Spurs just took it steamrolled ahead anyway.

The reason Ron Artest got penalized a game (imo) is because the Sacramento Bee came out and asked for the Kings to go into enforcer mode and bang the Spurs up as much as possible like in last years first couple of rounds the Spurs went through. Ron Artest is a loose cannon and that was exactly the type of sanction the league didn't want for him to have.

Ron Artest made his own bed on this one, so fuck him.

The Kings will be lucky to win one game with or without Artest. With that said, I hate watching the NBA playoffs because it seems like the refs determine the outcome of the games more than any other sport. One night they'll call everything, and the next they'll let players get rough without calling anything. People can say this is just part of the game all they want, but I think the lack of consistency sucks.

NBA officiating is atrocious all year long and the calls are generally for higher stakes in the playoffs. It's never going to change but I think it generally evens out so specific teams or players don't have a straight ahead advantage because of it.

I was watching some hockey in the week leading up to the playoffs and they were talking about hockey officiating and how they were really starting to tighten up calls because they were heading into the playoffs and officials are expected to be on point and correct and fair, even moreso than in the regular season. I swear the same day I was watching some basketball and the commentators were talking about how the officials were starting to get into playoff mode by not calling certain types of fouls and stuff. I think it's ridiculous, but I do think it evens out.

What I think is really, really shitty is when it doesn't even out, a call was obviously bad, the officials don't ever own up to it, they get called out by a coach or player in the press and then the coach or player gets fined for saying that the obviously shitty and disastrous call by the ref that DID make a difference in the game was shitty and disastrous and made a difference.

One thing else, basketball officials are particularly bad at all levels of the sport from junior high to NBA compared to officials in other sports. I don't know if the rules leave too much subjective room or what, but it's just not like football or hockey or whatever when it comes to enforcing the rules across the boards. The officials have to interpret what they see way too often and their opinions of what they see can be swayed depending on each circumstance, player, heat from the bench, venue, etc. It sucks.

Artest didn't deserve that suspension, it's total BS. If he's suspended, Manu should too for taking the first shot.

And that article's right. I hate Bruce Bowen, and I hate Greg Popovich for sending him out to play like that. It's why I can't root for the Spurs even though I love Tim Duncan's game. Bowen should be kicked out of the league, but because he's on a championship team the league looks the other way.

Iguodala only had two good dunks in that competition, and the only one that was really impressive was the one where Iverson helped out. People are only upset that Nate Robinson won because he took so many tries.

I don't care how they set up the rules, if it takes you 16 tries to get the ball in the basket, you aren't the NBA dunk champ. The crowd started off cheering for him, by the end when he won they were booing. Even in that gif, you can see all the players are like "wtf!?"

It was totally rigged so they could have Spud Webb part II playing in New York. Kenny Smith is a Knicks announcer and he gave Nate 9.9 like every single time. Iggy's behind the backboard dunk was the best since VC was in the contest.

The dunk contest was absolutely, 100% rigged. Everyone knew Nate was going to win it before it even started.

But why are we still talking about it? Its a fucking dunk contest, who cares? The sad thing is it will probably follow Nate his entire career, even if he goes on to have a good career (not in New York, presumably).

I love watching Shaq and the Heat get owned. Shaq had worst playoff performance of his career, and I loved every minute of it. Also, LAUGH at the Nets. I'm liking these playoffs this year. It's tough to predict.

Artest, by all accounts, is actually a very decent human being 95% of the time; he spends his spare time building up his old community in Queens, and gives back more money than anyone. Seriously though, I'd have no problem with the Lakers if it weren't for Kobe - Phil Jackson's an incredible coach, he's running circles around D'Antoni. But man, if I were in LA Bryant would have sent me to being a Clippers fan pretty quick. Brand, Livingston, Kaman, that team kicks ass.

Dude, even if you're the biggest Laker homer in the world, you've gotta know that jump ball at the end was an unbelievably horrible call. I'm still shaking my head in disbelief, the refs 100%, completely blew that one.

It sucks, because this series has been unbelievably well coached and played, I hate to see it decided on total bullshit like that. I mean whatever, Lakers still hit the clutch shots, Phoenix could've put it away and they didn't, but man, the Lakers were trying to foul Nash to get the ball back and the refs let them manhandle him, and completely ignored him calling a time out.

I don't think there was a foul on Nash since everyone kind of figure he would call a timeout. When they realized there was no whistle, they went for the ball since they had him trapped. I do admit that the refs should have given Nash the timeout (Boris Diaw, who was right there, should have helped out with calling the timeout). Although, the refs did let one go in the first game when Kobe got smacked in the face at the end of the game, so I guess things sort of evened out. There series is far from over, and I don't expect the Lakers to win the next one.

I was out with my friends and I would've made it home to watch the Kings/Spurs game, but I checked with my cell and saw the Kings were killing the Spurs, so I didn't bother to make it home to watch the game.

Bonzi Wells is BEASTLY.

Okay, I've just got to say, I don't even care who wins game 7, Suns/Lakers has been the best first round series EVER. The intensity is crazy, it feels like a finals series. You can tell the Suns players just hate Kobe's guts, you can tell Kobe's royally pissed he didn't get mvp. I can't believe how many big shots there have been - enough to fill a whole playoffs.

Reigning coach of the year vs. GCOAT Jackson, the adjustments back & forth have been marvellous. The way a bunch of nobodies/castoffs like Smush (except for last night) & Tim Thomas are outplaying half the NBA right now is nuts, nobody could have seen this coming.

I now interrupt your regularly scheduled playoff discussion to bring you one of the greatest selfish-athlete interviews of all time, starring Darius "10 points per game career average" Miles. Highlights:

I don't care if you come to practice and take shower, once you go to practice and start sweating, its going to come out. That doesn't mean you aren’t focused or ready to practice. Like you might go out, you might get drunk, and come to the gym higher than a mother, and you sweating, you smell like liquor, and you interviewing everybody. What does that mean? You still 100 percent focused. That's just ridiculous. Ask any other team, little petty stuff like that, if you ask any other coach in the NBA if they smell liquor on a player, any coach would say, every year. Some players go out in every city they go to.

That last part doesn't make any sense, but that's what you get for skipping college. "Dang, I don't have no bobble head?" is officially my new favourite phrase. Some guys care about having a career high better than 14 ppg, some guys care about being in "those little things with players talking on big screen." It's all about priorites, yo.

QFT. I don't give a flying shit about the NBA but what I've seen in this series is riveting. I will be watching Saturday.

Kobe's biggest accomplishment this year might be getting me to root for him. What a shocking face turn. This guy was universally hated before this season...just a notch below Barry Bonds and anyone who plays for the Yankees.

What the heck was that? The Lakers just flat-out laid down in game 7. Steve Nash has a bad back and a bad ankle, and he was just running around a bunch of purple pylons standing stock-still. No battle of LA, but hey, whatever, show up next time. Later, Mamba.

Well, I went 7 for 8 in the first round (although I was way off on the Lakers getting swept thing), and if I were being sensible I would've picked the Nets, but hey, I have my ethics. Predictions for the second round:

San Antonio-Dallas: Tim Duncan's hurt, this is an all-new Mavs team that plays defence, Dirk's playing like an MVP....whatever. The Spurs are a machine. Should be a good series, and I look forward to Josh Howard dunking all over cousin Balki,but San Antonio takes the battle o' Texas.

Detroit-Cleveland: Prepare to watch Lebron James chew off whatever finger nails he has left. It was fun while it lasted, 'Bron.

Miami-New Jersey: Shaq vs. Nenad round 2! Is it just me, or do Jason Kidd's knees not bend anymore? Watching him get lit up by Anthony "9 ppg career journeyman" Johnson was ugly. Heat win this going away.

Phoenix-LA Part II: Amare Stoudemire & Kurt Thomas are still out. Nash has a bad back & a bad ankle. The whole team has to be drained and exhausted after the Laker ordeal. For the Clippers, they have a more complete, well rested team. And you can never, ever underestimate ET Phone Home Cassell.

But screw it, I'm taking the Suns anyway.

Isiah's Pacer teams always underachieved, they got bounced in the first round every time. Of course, it didn't help that the team president was Larry Bird, Isiah's arch enemy. But as soon as Bird ditched him and brought in Rick Carlisle, they became perennial conference contenders.

Personally, if the Knicks do turf Brown, I expect Zeke to get them up to around the 35-38 win range and challenge for one of the bottom seeds. They have enough talent for that if he just lets the players freelance and play no D like they want. But he's going to totally undo any progress Larry made towards changing the culture of that franchise.

And if James Dolan really pays a Hall of Fame coach $40 million to go away, however psychotically awful he was this season, I honestly can't think of a worse businessman in sports. If he were in Salt Lake City instead of getting fat off New York, I've got to believe he would be penniless by now.

Today's game was not fantastic. Lebron almost took out my finals pick until the Pistons woke up and held the Cavs to like -3 in the second half. It was brutal. But man, Lebron is going to be really freaking good in two years.

Well, there goes my finals pick. The Pistons sure turned old in a hurry. Heat are in the finals.

I picked the Mavs to beat the Suns, so at least one of my picks for this round look solid, though I'd rather see the Suns win.

I picked the Mavs Vs. Heat from the beginning.

Detroit lacked the offensive firepower and the Mavs have really turned up their defense this year. Phoenix has a short rotation and their run and gun offense will lead to their demise, as it did in game 5. They were dog tired by the 4th period.
