Looks like something is stirring over on pandemic's website.
Fucking A!
I can't tell where that map is though. It looks like the top part of South America, perhaps even Venezuela? LOL, look out Chavez I'm going to BUST YO ASS!
Mercenaries was a fun game, but kind of shallow. If this game turns out as good as the last I may rent it. If it's not on a next-gen system I pass completely.
You're a moron, Andrew. Mercenaries was better than 90% of the games that came out that year, and that was a big year. Shallow? Ugh, Robobo is shallow. Mercenaries was everything it needed to be. You want stupid depth? Go play Kingdom Hearts and enjoy the heartwarming tale of some faggy looking 12 year old wearing clown shoes and his adventures with Disney characters.

Hey, maybe they'll send me to Venezuela! (WOOO BACK ON TOPIC!)
It'll be interesting to see how they do a lush setting like that, but they were able to do the variety of North Korean biomes pretty well. My only hope is that the theater of battle gets upped a lot more in this one.
EDIT: And really, even if I was a factory worker I'd still be happy knowing that no matter what atleast I'm not a shitty webcomic artist with no taste.
I still go back to Mercenaries when I want to blow shit up. If this plays and looks as well as the first but just gives me more shit to detonate, it's a day-one purchase.
And I want to hear them die screaming in Spanish!
DIIOSSS MIOOOOO, PORQUUUUUEEEEEEEEEE!
The way I see it, at the very worst it'll play the same except be in a more lush environment. I can't see this being a bad game.
there's another photo up on that site. i can't wait.
I would have enjoyed mercenaries more if the shit you blew up actually stayed blown up. It was fun demolishing propaganda village, but not so fun upon discovering that it magically rebuilt itself. Hope the new one fixes that.
An offshore drilling platform? Man I hope I get to blow that fucker up.Quote:

GIVE IT TO ME PANDEMIC. GIVE IT TO ME HARD.
edit: I hope Pat Robertson is a playable character.
You say that perminantly destructable buildings would be better, but you could very easily fuck up the story line if they did that. I took great pleasure in blowing up a great deal of buildings which later turned out to be integral to missions.
You want an improvement? Destructable trees and the ability to swim for fucks sake.
Good point but I GOTTA believe that Pandemic knows people want shit to be blown up all the time, at least some of it. Maybe just make the integral buildings come back (or if not making them broken forever, show guys rebuilding them and shit), thats what happens when you kill a crownded dude in Oblivion right? He just gets knocked "unconscious". Its sort of weird but it works.Quote:

This is outstanding news. I really should pick up and play the first one again, nothing was like the feeling of when you blew up your first building with an air strike.
How about driving through fences? Your tank can drive over absolutly everything, but you can't go through fences easily!?!Quote:

WOOT! Been waiting for this since finishing the first one. Instant purchase. hell, might even get an HDTV for this sucker. Just fix the damned steering.
Edit: Looks like theres a countdown on those pics if you scroll down. Right now its on 16. Days maybe? Whens E3?

This better come out on 360...
It will...
...it must.
One of the big titles they showed at Sony's conference last year was Fight Night 3. I think they're just implying that's where footage will first be seen, not that it's exclusive.

Quote:
May 3, 2006 - Pandemic Studios today announced Mercenaries 2: World in Flames, the sequel to its smash-hit sandbox shooter from early last year, Mercenaries. For the sequel, Pandemic has reconstructed its "playground of destruction" from the ground up for "next-gen technology", though the developer is remaining tight-lipped about exactly what platforms the game will appear on. The only solid bit of info that Pandemic is sharing today is that the game will take place in a new locale.
"While the original Mercenaries' high-octane, go anywhere, do anything and blow the crap out of everything style was a hit with gamers, the whole experience was screaming to run on next-generation game systems," explains Pandemic CEO Andrew Goldman. "And while we're building on the core mercenary experience we created for the original, we've taken full advantage of next-gen technology to offer a more richly detailed, reactive, living world than gamers have ever seen before."
Mercenaries 2: World in Flames will make an appearance at E3 where Pandemic promises fully reveal the title, so hold your breath.
Fuck yes. GotY.

pc? im there.

There's two mini-gameplay videos in the vehicles section that are probably from a hella early build. Still, the lush jungle atmosphere and especially the density and detail in the small urban environment is worth seeing.

gahhhhh.
I still have to play the first one, so that's fine with me... I can take my time getting to it now since I won't own a PS3.
Looks like Ill be playing Mercs 2 in 2009, then.
Most dissapointing news of show, by far.

Yay! I'll be able to play Mercernaries 2 on an Xbox 360 after all (maybe).
Quite. I wonder why this is the only game this E3 that is so up in the air as to where we'll be able to play it.Quote:

I'm honestly super excited about the game, but kind of put off if I have to drop 600 bucks on a PS3 to play it.
Fingers crossed for a 360 release.
Pandemic address some of the more persistant questions.
edit: Scott is also answering fan questions: one and two .Quote:
Is Mercenaries 2 exclusive to the PS3?
We have not made any final decisions concerning the various platforms for Mercenaries 2.
Can I still blow everything up?!
Of course you can! Some key destruction features:
- Many structures come down in sections:
- Use your rocket to take down a balcony and have it drop down on unsuspecting enemies below!
- Destroy one support pylon of a massive oil rig and watch part of the structure come down dynamically on the side of the pylon you destroyed!
- Buildings can become occupied by enemies who will then use the structure to assault you! Destroy that building and you'll get rid of those pesky units!
- Use oil and other flammable material to set structures on fire!
- Use a Daisy Cutter bomb to clear out sections of forests and jungles so that you can have support delivered to your location!
- Yes, you can destroy trees!
What's the story of Mercenaries 2?
A power hungry tyrant has siezed control of Venezuela and her oil supply, throwing the country into chaos and creating an international crisis. As his whereabouts are unknown, his network is vast and the loyalty of the Venezulean army to his cause is fierce, a massive bounty for his head has done little to deter his continued destablization of the country.
But this guy has a big problem: you. Right before he became infamous around the globe, he contracted your services for a little job with a huge payday. Trouble is, once you completed your task, he tried to snuff you out.
And, more importantly, he tried to get away without paying.
So you're going to get together some money, some weapons and some tough as nails mercs, and you're going to hunt this joker down.
Because in the end, there's only one thing to remember:
EVERYBODY PAYS.
What happened to ExOps?
In Mercenaries 2 you are your own boss! One of the key game features of the sequel is your ability to create your own private military company. As you progress through the game you will meet other mercenaries in the game who will be willing to join your PMC, provided you meet their conditions. Each mercenary you recruit unlocks key support classes that help you expand the capabilities of your PMC.
Another cool aspect to the PMC is that the PMC will actually be headquartered within the game world. You will be able to enter your PMC and talk to your recruits!
Does this mean Fiona Taylor is not featured in Mercenaries 2?
Nope! Fiona Taylor will return as your key support operative. However, this time around you not only hear Fiona as you operate in the field, but she'll also be a real, physical character that you can see and talk to when you return to your PMC!
Which playable mercenaries can we choose from?
At the moment we have only announced the return of Mattias Nilsson from the original Mercenaries and a new mercenary, Eva Navarro. We'll be talking about the other mercenaries in the near future.
Does Peter Stormare still provide the voice of Mattias?
Indeed he does!
Does Mercenaries 2 still feature the Deck of 52?
Mercenaries 2 will again feature the capture or kill mechanic for bounties issued by clients in the game. However, this time around all clients (not just the Allies!) will be putting prices on people's heads and as such each client has different ways in which they list their most wanted bounties.
How long will it take to complete Mercenaries 2?
We estimate that the time it takes to complete the critical path of Mercenaries 2 will be roughly equivalent to that of the original Mercenaries. However, the total amount of game play content in the world of Mercenaries 2 has been vastly expanded over the original, so experiences with the game can be much, much longer depending on each gamer's experience.
Can I swim in the water in Mercenaries 2?
Yes you can! You can swim in the water, drive/hijack/blow-up water vehicles, dive underneath the water to plant C4 on structural weakpoints, use the water to lose enemies looking for you, and many, many other possibilities! Nearly 1/3 of the world of Mercenaries 2 is covered with water.
Can I destroy trees in Mercenaries 2?
Yes! And you can light them on fire, too.
How large is the world of Mercenaries 2?
The world of Mercenaries 2 is larger than all of the maps of the original Mercenaries combined.
One cool aspect of the new game is that the world is one contiguous map. You will no longer load between maps in Mercenaries.
What kind of environments are featured in Mercenaries 2?
Mercenaries 2 will feature many cool environments, including:
- Massive, densely-packed urban environments with incredibly tall skyscrapers and bustling city-life down below
- Oceans, lakes and rivers that you can travel over and under
- The sprawling expanse of the Amazon jungle, a region that conceals many enemies, traps and unknowns
- Islands in the ocean that house various clients and secret activities
What is the balance of critical content to freeplay in the game?
Roughly 50/50. It's important to point out that these two modes are not divorced in Mercenaries 2: game play within the freeplay side of the game is critical to acquiring the money and resources necessary to build up your PMC, as well as affecting your reputation with the various clients in the world. Many contracts (missions) that you complete for the various clients in the game will change the landscape of what is available to you in free play.
Will the game feature Online Co-op?
Currently we have only talked about and demonstrated our split-screen cooperative play. Online co-op is certainly within the realm of possibilities for the final game.
Do both players have to stay near one another in Co-op?
Each player can travel about the entirety of the game world, take jobs and engage in game play independent of the other player.
How many clients (factions) are there in the game?
We have not announced the nature or total numbers of clients in the game.
Is Mercenaries 2 being developed by the same team that created the original?
The vast majority of the original development team has returned to create Mercenaries 2, including the director of the project, Cameron Brown. We have also doubled the size of original team to include many new very talented, highly enthusiastic programmers, designers and artists.
Does Pandemic own the rights to the Mercenaries intellectual property?
The Mercenaries property is owned by Pandemic Studios.
Where is Mercenaries 2 being developed?
Mercenaries 2 is under development at Pandemic Studios, Los Angeles.
How has the new arrangement with Elevation Partners and Bioware Studios affected the development of Mercenaries 2?
The creation of Bioware / Pandemic Studios has provided all projects at the respective studios unprecedented creative and financial support. Specific to Mercenaries 2, the arrangement has provided the team with the time and resources necessary to develop a brand new engine from scratch, custom built for open world games on next generation gaming platforms.
The new partnership has also fostered communication between the two studios. The developers at Bioware have seen various iterations of the tech and design documentation in progress. The Mercs team will using some of Bioware's very robust tools for the creation of content in Mercenaries 2.
Is Bono involved in the development of Mercenaries 2?
Bono is partner in Elevation Partners and as such has visibility into all projects at Pandemic and Bioware.
Will Mercenaries 2 take advantage of the new features of the PS3 controller?
The new features of the PS3 controller are very cool but we are not at the point yet where we can discuss how we might take advantage of them.
I really hope they can deliver the goods.
Splitscreen co-op would be fricking awesome. Just hope it does end up on 360.

lolololololololololol
Pat Robertson preordered. his exact words were, "the bitch is going down"
Pat Robertson can leg-press 2000 pounds.
I'm surprised Chavez has his fingers on the pulse of videogaming, it took North Korea years before they got pissy about all the Tom Clancy games in their rathole, and they didn't even mention the original Mercs.
I bet Chavez has shares in BioPandemic.
Can't wait for this. Too bad that, currently, it's a PS3 title only.
Supposedly, it's the DVD-9 vs Blu-Ray that is holding back a X360 version of this. Not enough space to create a seamless experience. Problem is, it isn't just Pandemic saying this, as Starbreeze (Riddick, Darkness) also have stated that this is a problem for the X360.
The only thing I can see happening, is they put this on HD-DVD for the 360. Then, I can either buy the HD-DVD drive for my 360 or buy the PS3. Hmm...
In those videos you also see them playing Halo and various other Xbox/360 games. So sadly I'm not going to look at those pics as being proof.
This games simply MUST be on 360. MS could ease my pain a little though by at least making the first one backward compatible.
If this stays exclusive to the PS3, Sony just locked down my purchase of the system(well that, tekken 6, and silent hill pretty much guaranteed it awhile ago)
if it does stay exclusive i will probably be forced to pick up the ps3, but not anytime soon. it will be the first game i get when the system drops in price.
I just can't see this staying exclusive to PS3. Biggest market for game: North Amercia; biggest installed base in N.A. for the foreseeable future: 360 (don't even mention Wii, thank you). Also, as much I liked the original, I don't recall it garnering the kind of sales that would lead to Sony to do a cash-for-exclusivity deal. It's just doesn't have that kind of mind-share.
I fully expect this to be 360 bound, which is fine by me.
It's going to be on the 360, I guarantee it.
Mercs 2 to be published by EA.
Quote:
Today, though, BioWare/Pandemic revealed it has struck a deal with one of the most traditional publishers of all, Electronic Arts. The agreement will see EA distribute, sell, and market Mercenaries 2 worldwide through its EA Partners program much like it does Valve Software's hit shooter Half-Life 2. According to a press release from the publisher, the game is set for a holiday 2007 release, and is still exclusive to the PS3.
does pandemic not want money? 360, morons!
When was the last time an EA published game was an exclusive? During the Dreamcast era?
It's not so bad. At least this time around they'll get some marketing.
They had plenty of marketing for the first game, I saw commercials on ESPN all the time. As a result, Mercs was the top selling multiplatform game in the month it released, by a fair margin IIRC.
Oddworld: Strangers Wrath. You'd think they'd have learned their lesson.Quote:

Ah. Well there was virtually none over here.
I hope they include the Burnout 3 DJ.
It's official! Mercenaries 2 on PS3, XB360, PC, and...PS2!?!
SourceQuote:
“Mercenaries 2: World in Flames delivers the next evolution in explosive open world gameplay – regardless of the system you play it on,” said Pandemic Studios CEO Andrew Goldman. “All four platforms are incredible gaming machines, and from the beginning we designed an experience that accentuates their individual strengths and delivers the interactive freedom and explosive action Mercenaries fans demand.”
I wonder what strengths individual to the PS2 will be accentuated by PS2 Mercenaries 2.
The interesting thing about the EA deal, according to the IGN interview, is that Pandemic was able to keep the IP rights to Mercenaries. Pandemic definitely got the better end of the deal (excellent distribution system, no ass rape).
I just hope to Xenu they don't put the goddamn EA Trax in the game.
I didn't know that. It seems I'll have to update my S-16 article on the series.Quote:

Jonathan Zamkoff: Obviously, in a world that offers so much choice in a single-player game, you can imagine the permutations when you add a second player who can jump in and out of the game at any time and help player one complete his or her missions at any time. You know, you add a game with so many levels and so many things to do, and you add in a second player, and that's a major advancement over Mercenaries 1.
DAY FUCKING 1!
About time. This is good news. Very good news.
Awesome news!
Good news. I kinda liked Mercenaries, but got bored with it after the first ace contract. I found the attention to detail pretty impressive, though. I just wish the terrain was more varied. That shouldn't be as much of a problem with the south american setting. Hopefully this is what Just Cause should have been.
Now that gaming's worst-kept secret has been revealed, here's hoping for a confirmation of MGS4 on 360 even though Splinter Cell stomps it flat.
I had read earlier that we were only going to get to play with the Swede, but that interview there gives the impression that we'll have 4 players to play with instead of the previous 3 last game. I hope this is true. I wasn't a big fan of the Swede.
Such a pleasant surprise. One less reason to buy a PS3...where is that checklist?
BTW, it's funny that there is a PS2 version but no Wii port from it. lolz...Everybody pays.
They probably have no idea how to incorporate the motion sensing into the game and dont want to have to listen to people moan about the lack of it in a Wii game.
Taking down Hugo Chavez on 360 with online co-op? I'm there!
This game will be the ducks nuts. Blowing the shit out of everything in co-op will be delightful.
