Yes, I'm aware that 90% of the board has already watched this movie a long time ago.
This thread is for the domestic US release.
I and some friends rented it yesterday. That was the worst best thing I've ever seen. The only thing that could have made it cheesier was if Rhapsody was who they got to redo One Winged Angel.
I dl'd the english dub last week, I got the dvd today, the english dub is really, really bad.
aw shit, i take it they didn't go back and redo mouth animations for the english dialouge eh? Is the voice acting that bad as well?

Technical differences. In the end it's an overly dramatic and juvenile story culminating in long (although well staged, I give this movie its due for putting out some great action sequences), drawn out battles riddled with sloganeering and posturing. I love the 'EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE OKAY' looking up at the sun Cloud does before being shot through the chest in a melodramatic sequence befitting of any poorly conceived anime. I didn't completely hate it, but it's unmistakingly Hong Kong material at best. I think the scene with Kadaj holding the container and toiling over mother was one of the most cringe-worthy bad acting moments, and has to be one of the worst things to put on a resume since Anne Sellors' only screen portrayal of a woman urinating herself (She has one of the most impressive resume's in all of movies).Quote:

Modern Japanese movies, live action or animated, simply cannot tell anything resembling a non-cheesy, coherent story. FF: Spirits Within was a giant piece of shit. I don't know why you clowns expected more out of this movie.

You guys are way to harsh. It's a fanservice movie that accomplished what it wanted to do. Be a fast paced ACTION movie to please longtime fans. That's exzactly what they did. They were not trying to be the Movie of the Year.
The dub explains things much better than the subs did. I recommended it if you don't go in jaded.

I love the movie because it takes unbelievability to hillarious new heights. The whole "Let's gang up and THROW Cloud up THROUGH a city killing fireball" is too good. So is the whole, Oh shit got stabbed....... Well, TIME TO OMNISLASH x 10 or whatever the fuck he did. Great movie if you're smart enough not to take it seriously.
Oh yeah, the plot is ludicrous, then again so was the movies the source material.

Watching both tells me that the movie was deliberately supposed to be as off the wall as it was. They knew it would look silly to nonfans and thus made the heavily cut version for Vince. Then in the commentary the main cutscene guy for all the FF games admits that he wanted things to be unnatural from the get go. The way he put it was “if you are going to do it like real life, why not just shoot it with real actors on film?”

I downloaded the japanese version of this several months ago, I thought it was merely okay. I found myself being more impressed by the quality of the cg (especially the enviroments) then I was with the actual film.
ok just watched this for the 1st time.
the only redeeming part of the movie is the fight with all the characters against that flying thing.
other than that, the animation was good. but the story was wtf. the fight scenes were all over the place, some were good, some were bad. if they would have at least taken more than 10 minutes writing a script , this could have been great

dubs matter when the dialogue actually matters, so no, the dub argument is invalid in this case. The fights and the CG were extremely well-done, they took advantage of the whole digital aspect of it and managed to go over the top with it. It's a better application of CGI than any of the SW prequels, imo, because even nowadays, CGI still looks cartoony.
