I know nothing about art. I mean, nothing. Well, other than that I don't really care for Warhol (or however you spell it). I'd love to learn a little though and having a nice piece of art or two for my room would be cool (prints obviously). Anyone have any favorite artists or favorite pieces of art?
I find that most people who "don't care for Warhol" really don't understand what he was doing. It's a lot more fun to read up on him and hate him for real. :D
Thomas Eakins' The Gross Clinic (1875) is one of my favorite all time paintings, just to start the ball rolling. It's freaky.
I don't want to derail this into a Warhol discussion already but, I think I do understand what he was doing, post-modernism and all that. It isn't so much that I don't care for it as I'm just sick of it. It's all people my age ever seem to talk about art wise.Quote:

Keith Haring looks good on any wall.
Salvador Dali (morbid, strange figures in landscapes), M.C. Esher (oo spelled right? impossible, tesselations, black and white), and that surealist but not surealist french dude.. m something. People in hats, this is not a pipe, etc.
edit. Thank you google. Name of Magritte (striking realism with that hint of weird) and Gustav Klimt. (I like his style alot. plays with color and texture in his paintings, moves the eye alot, topless women with cold faces and odd hair)
Black on Black. It's a piece of black wood on top of another piece of black wood. Part of a sixteen (IIRC) piece exhibit which is nothing but blocks of wood painted a specific color on top of other blocks of wood painted the same color. AFAIK it's still on display on the lower level of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Sarcasm aside, there was a great painting I saw of a dead angel in water with her halo floating above her head but damned if I can remember the artist or the title (not much help, I know). A couple others I've also been meaning to get prints of but I always forget the name by the time I get home. Escher is fantastic but I've been subjected to way too much of him throughout my entire time at school and I've grown rather sick of seeing his stuff.
Try checking out Baroque stuff. It doesn’t get as much attention as the Renaissance period before it or the impressionists that came after. My favorites from this era are El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos) & Caravaggio

I like art by Hajime Sorayama. He mostly does robotic stuff and a few other freakish things.
Check out Bansky, a graffiti artist who can't even attend his own exhibitions out of fear of being arrested. You may remember him for how he recently hung his own paintings up in a bunch of major art galleries, or for tagging a herd of cows .He does this really awesome politically charged stencil art like this:

Tim Biskup does some amazing stuff.

I really like Dave the Chimp's stuff for Flying Fortress.
In general, I like the more character-oriented art movement that's sprung up recently.
p.s. Gary Baseman is way overrated.
If you want photography, I definently recommend Cindy Sherman. Absolutely phenomenal artist, actress and photography. Few people are as dedicated to their work as she is.

Another art style I like is art deco. This was the art style I drew in as a child. I wasn't aware that anyone else ever drew anything with the same style at the time. You might notice that many cartoons use this style today.

Anything Dadaist. It's evolved a bit, but is the spiritual grandfather of all bad messageboard photoshop edits. It also has a punky edge to it which appeals to me. Anything that requires no prior training is always desireable. (Kinda like walking for exercise)
Brute! who does most of KMFDM's covers. His stuff brings to mind woodcuts I used to make in college art classes. It also has a propaganda poster vibe to it.
Anything by H.R. Geiger.

I'm not sure if we're doing comicbook artist as well, but I Mark Texiera's work with Wolverine was phenomenal in my opinion. I have to say, I like his comic work better than his painting.

If you want Renaissance-era prints, one of the few that I think are interesting beyond the historical aspect is Giuseppe Arcimboldo.

Holy...Gallery two, there's a painting with a girl's head floating in midair, like the cheshire cat, with huge alien geen eyes/no nose. Very very creepy.
I like his landscape stuff much more than his scarified/jumbled people stuff. A few in particular are really awesome and make me want to start writing shit that takes place there. I do like the one painting of the person in gallery one where it's almost as if you're looking at the back of it but you see the bone tooth smile.
I'd love to play an adventure game with settings from some of those backdrops. Something that goes in and out of the fabric of reality.
My favorite painting of all time is probably,Lord Fredrick Leighton's "Flaming June" (1895) on display at the Ponce Museum of Art.
The question you need to ask yourself is "Should the art fit the room or the room fit the art?" If there was a print you felt really strongly about, then you just put it up regardless. But if you're picking something to complement your room (which is what I'm guessing cause your asking for suggestions) Size and color are the two major criteria for selecting art to fit its surroundings.
For any particular space, art that is too large will overwhelm, and art that is too small will be lost , or look disproportionate. Just look for something that you can display at around eye level, that matches the color scheme/style of the room. For example, if the room is painted blue, and has a modern edge to it, Flaming June which is warm colors might not be the best fit. Or stick to neutrals and muted colors that go anywere.
Then look for prints that fall into that catagory.
