There are a few things that need to be done. Shidoshi and MarsKitten highlighted the real problem.
1) Increase funding at INS/USCIS to add staff, and streamline the paperwork.

Also
2) Fine employers 10x the equivalent of 1 year's salary/wages/tips per illegal immigrant per year.
3) Deport immigrants who unlawfully stay after the process has been overhauled.
4) Enforce our borders.
5) Pass a US Constitutional Amendment designating English as our official language.

In the meantime, there's some simple logic people are overlooking:
- Illegal immigrants' protests do not have power. They lack voting rights or any other means of direct leverage to convince legislators to grant them amnesty.
- They are not entitled to US health and social security benefits if they do not file income taxes.
- A sovereign country has borders. If you cross those borders, you should respect and abide by its rules no matter how bureaucratic or tiresome they may be.

It took my wife 5 years to become a citizen. She followed the rules, and we don't have sympathy for people who don't.

I live in a town that is more than half Mexicans, mostly illegal, and my life wasn't affected in the slightest.

Absolutely disagree with this. I don't want us to turn into douchebag culture police like the Quebecois. Language is a part of culture, and culture is dynamic and ever-changing. It's foolish and futile to try to regulate it.

Language is an important part of our history and culture. The US Constitution was not written in two languages.

The sad part is, most of them do pay taxes if they're employed full-time. They get fake social security numbers and they pay into the system but get nothing back.

Technically right, but they can't be turned away if they're in need of emergency care. And if they're undocumented, it's very hard to keep track of them to make sure they pay what they owe afterwards. It's not the huge system-breaking issue everyone paints it as, but it's still a fairly large drain that noticably drives up costs for taxpayers & patients.

That's their own fault for not applying for a visa or citizenship.

Why not? If you don't have access to an ambulance in case of an accident, that'd be strong reinforcement for going through the system the right way.
