I was actually just talking to my girlfriend about the word "otaku" after we saw Suncoast selling t-shirts brandishing the term. I never understood it. Doesn't it have a far more negative connotation than "geek" or "nerd," being that it, literally, means "obsessive"? I sure as hell don't want that word associated with me.
Anytime you're given a ringside seat to someone's obsession you've got to feel pity and embarassment for the person. When it's something as trite as anime or manga, it's all the worse. I felt the same way watching Trekkies.
I always thought it was like a recluse or a shut-in, I dunno. We've certainly changed the connotation of geek around, why not otaku?Quote:

Trekkies and Star Wars nerds are just the West's home-grown version of otaku. They're neither better nor worse. The only real difference I'd say is that Trekkies tend to the be older.
I'd say "but Trekkies and 'Warsies' don't insist shit is better because it's from a certain country," but I'm sure Lucas vs. Roddenberry fights would prove to be equal. Damn.
I want to go to a maid cafe.
Maybe it's because on some level I can understand the anime f-chan love, and of course I can the SW obssessions...
But Star Trek? Come on.
Star Trek, Babylon 5, Dr. WHO, Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars, etc. they all have that level of fans that go to the extreme in their admiration of the series. Same with countless anime series and videogames.
Also, what's with the Star Trek hate? Is it because you're jealous that just about every TNG episode was better written than any of the Star Wars movies?
I wouldn't know. Never watched it longer than five minutes. As with everything- I'll take your word on it.Quote:
