Not really, because in the 20's to 60's most people didn't keep or take good care of cards (they were seen as kid's toys, worthless). In the 80's and 90's everyone was collecting cards and holding on to them, keeping them in good condition, etc. There are only a few Mickey Mantle cards left in good condition because everyone put them in their bike spokes, wheras almost everyone with a Derek Jeter Rookie Card has it in a plastic case.
I have a shit-ton of baseball/football/basketball cards from the early 80's to the early 90's in my basement. I haven't looked at 'em in about 10 years and I don't plan on doing anything with them until I'm a old man. Even then they'll probably be worthless.
I had a ton of baseball and basketball cards. I stopped collecting. You cant even sell them shits on eBay. It'll be worth like $300, you'll get $10. If you do have a rare card, you can get it professionally graded and sell it on eBay. Thats like the only way it will sell. But it will cost you money to get it graded.
I just ended up tossing majority of it away or giving it away. I still have some around the house but I'm too damn lazy to look for them and throw them away. Even if I see it laying around, I just dont bother touching it or throwing them away, I just leave it where it is.
I got suckered into the kid version of the stock market of the early 90s too. I still have complete sets of all those marvel cards, which I really did enjoy in the day, especially all the stats on the back (wolverine has an intelligence of 4 whereas prof x is a 6...interesting...)
My favorite part about all that shit is the comics with all the variant covers. People payed tons of cash for 13 different copies of Gen 13 #1 and now they're absolutely worthless. "Hologram" was a big word back then.
I wonder if anyone who spent $100 on a single pog even remembers that shit.
All good points. Once everyone starts thinking they have a collectible it becomes worthless (the same thing happens with videogames). My dad bought me the 1980 and 1981 complete Topps set when I was both unborn and fresh out of the womb, the most valuable card I know I have in there is a Cal Ripken Jr. rookie card, but its value has fluctuated a lot over the years (it hit its peak at game 2131). I think its at a low point now.Quote:

Nobody ever actually throws out their cards anymore, we just all say we're going to.
