You can buy both games, you know.
Umbrella Chronicles bumps it down to $220.
Oh Christ, did Spo just indirectly back me up? You're right, Yoshi, wtf was I saying.
my sister was playing and i hopped on to second player. It feels almost like were cheating but yeah it still holds its fun, and shes really loving it so mario galaxy = winner.
Why would you waste your money on Umbrella Chronicles?
Regardless, I'm convinced that I was wrong and your post was my proof. No matter what my opinion may be at the time, I have to be able to realize when I am likely to be wrong. Nothing against you, I'm just not one to fight against trends.
With that said, the only three Wii games I plan to own by the end of the year are SMG, Ghost Squad, and New Blood. But among these three, there is only one that would even remotely be considered a system seller. I got a little excited; it's just encouraging to hear feedback that echos the positive reviews Galaxy has already received.
i like this game, it's amazing. i like Zack & Wiki more. It's a sad world. but when i heard the battleship music playing, everything was right. everything was right.
I never liked Mario 64, so I'm glad to hear that the 64 haters are loving Galaxy. Hopefully Santa will bring me a Wii.
Does anyone not like this game yet?
Nope...and thats because there is just too much to love about this game. It seems to hit all the sweet spots. There are so many great homages to past Super Mario Bros. game that its just awesome :)
I loved hearing the music from level 1-3 of SMB3 in this game BTW :)
Now if the Koopalings showed up...
And it turns out "U R MR GAY" wasn't a photoshop.
Who thought it was a photoshop? I figured it was just the boxart, but the same letters sparkle in-game as well.
I don't know, I heard some people blame those rambunctious kids and their fancy image altering softs. But yeah, I noticed the letters on the title screen too. Funny shit.
I think you're thinking gameoverdude, but Time Crisis IS awesome.Quote:
Are you the guy that really likes the Time Crisis games on these boards? If so, Ghost Squad would make Mario a $270 game right now. Did I just advocate the purchase of a Wii? I'll be back after I take a bath in epson salt.
Honestly, if I had one, I'd probably also buy Ghost Squad, Trauma Center (maybe), and Zack & Wiki. Not enough incentive for my broke ass, yet, though.
Love the game so far but i am disappointed unlike you all about the lack of exploration aspects. Those were some of my fondest memories of Mario.
This game is the one game that gives me a strong desire to buy a Wii.
But it takes more then one game for me, and I don't see anything coming in the future that screams buy me either.
SSBB and then nothing for the rest of forever.
I have no interest in SSBB.
Kinda stinks that this will be the only mario game for like the next 4 or 5 years.
Fuck the wii.
Metroid Prime 3 + Mario Galaxy + Virtual Console make the Wii an already great system, well worth the $250.
Metroid Prime 3 I would play, but it's not a system seller to me.
And I've gone on quite a bit about the bullshit that is VC.
Metroid Prime 3 wouldn't be enough to sell me the system when there's so many good FPS on 360. Mario Galaxy, even if GotY, isn't enough to really sell the system.
Virtual Console is just a fucking LAWL to someone who already has a modbox.
This is coming from someone who owns a Wii, so it's not hate. I can just understand how many people don't think it's worth the bank just yet.
Eh, kinda beats burning the series out. Hell I'm even getting a little burnt on Zelda and I could have lived without Sunshine.
I have nothing against sequels, but I like them more when they're spaced out. Even my favorite series start to seem less special when they become annual franchise.
I still wouldn't call Prime a first person shooter, and besides it's a better video game than any of 360's FPS games.
It's the best reason to own any of the three systems right now.Quote:

Virtual Console is a great way to play old games legally and legitimately. There's a lot of stuff I either missed out on as a kid or didn't play enough of, so for me the Virtual Console is a godsend. I did the pirate thing back on Dreamcast (so lawlz to your Xbox), and it really sucks the enjoyment out of gaming for me.Quote:

It just has two of the years top five games (I'd say #1 and #3) and only costs $250. And I'd argue that Wii Sports is a must play, however shallow it is.Quote:

markryan, youre chill and all, but youve been going the loony route next to shineaqua. Mario Galaxy is great, but i REALLY wouldnt tell someoe to get a Wii for it, once its done its done really, VC really does little for those who havent played those games as a kid/cant appreciate old school games, and MP3 was so haloed out in the first 20 minutes i still have a bad taste in my mouth.
Bioshock was now ZOE2 so Ryan couldn't get into it.
If people buy 360's for Halo I can justify telling someone to get a Wii for Mario. Past Smash Bros. Brawl we don't really know what they have in the works, but I'd be willing to bet we'll see one more Zelda (which I think was mentioned as already being in development.) Stack that on top of Mario Kart and I think the purchase is well justified. If third parties would emulate Capcom more then I wouldn't have a problem at all recommending the system to anyone.
I'm with Opaque, I think you need like 5 great games to justify a system purchase at full price.
Mario Galaxy
Zelda: TP
Mario Kart
Metroid Prime 3
Smash Bros. Brawl
As for third party, there's Ghost Squad, Zack and Wiki...and for now that's all I can think about.
Just playing devil's advocate, but that's easily 5. Yeah they're mostly Nintendo developed games, but that's been the norm since the N64. They're not all out yet, but I'd say that by summer '08 Mario Kart will be out and a justified purchase for anyone.
-Awesome
-Double Dash sucked IMO, doesnt pull a galaxy by being better then its 64 counterpart
-Doesnt pull a galaxy by being better then its 64 counterpart
-Blah, i will honestly TRY to play this more but it was just such a shame to see the series try and be what it should never associate with
-Should be fun fun times
Two of those aren't out yet.
Someone shouldn't buy a system because games are going to come out, they should wait and buy it when they are out.
I want to play Uncharted and Ratchet but instead of buying a PS3 a year ago and waiting I'm asking for one for Christmas. Now after I have it I'll play things like Resistance and Motorstorm, but those weren't worth buying the system over.
Wii may have three great games and some others that are worth playing if you already have the system, but until there's a few more I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who didn't know better.
I'm in the position where I need at least a couple of games I want to buy right now, and at least 3-5 coming down the line that I'm excited about before I will get a system.
Hence why I didn't get a 360 untill after Gears, Dead Rising, and Lost Planet (hey I still like it) hit, with Bioshock, Mass Effect, Halo 3 and Lost Odyssey that I was looking forward to.
I don't have a PS3 because so far there's just Resistance and Ratchet and Clank I want (possibly Uncharted as well) and really the only game I'm looking forward to is MGS4.
With the Wii there's only Mario and possibly Prime 3 and Zelda (I'd at least play the last two if I got a system) and exactly zero upcoming games I find interesting.
I already have a gamecube, so scratch TP. I'm not real big on Smash or Prime (I like them ok, but I'm perfectly comfortable living without them. Prime would be a rent, in fact). Kart's not even out so who knows. That series is inconsistent.
Galaxy, Zack and Wiki, and maybe NiGHTS if it's good. Getting close, but not there yet for me.
MK Double Dash and MK DS don't leave the upcoming Wii game looking very appealing. I'd only play Smash with friends that will own it anyway. TP is a Gamecube game that I've already played through.
I can't bring myself to finish even the first Prime: it took me three attempts over the years to stick with it up to the Omega Pirate (or whatever the hugest one is), and I have absolutely no desire to finish it. It has its strengths, definitely, but I'm largely baffled with the praise it gets.
It's as much of an FPS as Half-Life, Shock 2, Tribes, and Thief are. Let's not get subgenre-crazy.Quote:
I still wouldn't call Prime a first person shooter
But more in common with Bioshock than Zelda.
Prime is absolutely a FPS. It's not even a ridiculous departure as one. FPS is just a fairly diverse genre.
Shoot, i was going to put that but i forgot in my deleting and rewriting over an hour. Dreamcast too. Those were good times.
I know everyone stopped talking about it but Metroid Prime 3 is in no way a system seller. If it wasn't for the nice control scheme, it would be almost entirely unremarkable. Barely feels like a sequel to Prime 1. Which I loved. Five years ago.
I only played the first galaxy once and can already see this is going to be a fantastic game. The galaxy-type levels were a little disorienting at first but they were still fun as hell. The first level seemed really cool, so I am pumped to see what else is in store.
Galaxy is pretty good but for some reason wasn't holding my attention, I got three of those major stars in and was more going through the motions than anything else. I really like a lot of the ideas and the way it's handled, and the constant gravity changes and ways they mess around is nifty. Couldn't say why I wasn't really into it, maybe it was just my mood. The old-school music was pretty awesome.
Absurd. Metroid Prime does classic Metroid design almost exactly save for the viewpoint. Prime is an action/adventure game design just like Metroid has always been. You wouldn't throw Super Metroid into the same genre as R-Type and/or Contra because it scrolls sideways and you shoot stuff.
I hope so. I recently got the game and the beginning is the most bored I have been playing a Metroid game. I'm so used to the series bringing you right into the good stuff, not giving generic space station training crap with NPCs.Quote:

You and I both. I especially hate it when a game is intentionally developed over the span of sequels. God of War II is an example of a great game that does this. Which is why when people harp on the "been there, done that" story of Galaxy all I can think of is - so what? I'd rather take a game that has solid gameplay and zero plot or rehashed stories over some epic that takes 3-5 games to finish.
I'm also no fan of seeing an annual release for a franchise (Tony Hawk anyone?).
MarkRyan loses all credibility with that Prime 3 > HL2, PORTAL, BIOSHOCK, HALO 3, COD4, ETC. comment.
What credibility?
Good point.
The story of a game has no effect on whether or not it has good, solid gameplay, so I see no issue with games that have both.Quote:

It's the plague on the wallet versus what could be done - the gameplay changes between God of War 1 and 2 were minor, meaning you were paying to play more of the same, just in newer venues. If God of War 3 is that way, then it makes me wonder why they didn't just dev the game for PS3 and tell the whole story. Then again, sequelitis is the best way to make money these days.
Even if this was true (or possible, for that matter), I don't see how it would mean it's not a FPS.
If it's a first-person game that involves a lot of shooting crap, it's a FPS. It doesn't do anything that hasn't been done in the genre elsewhere. Platforming, exploration, developing a story through logs, adventure elements... none of these things have seperated any other game into a different genre, so why should it here?
Galaxy really looks fantastic. Sitting a fair distance (re: on my couch) from my 42" 1080p display I am hard pressed to notice that it's in standard def. (From half the distance it still looks like ass though.)
What does that even mean? I haven't yet played a game that came out just over a week ago. I think it looks pretty generic personally, but I'll play it before I judge it.
I guess 360 can have Half-Life 2 if Wii gets credit for Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Metroid, Gunstar Heroes, et al. But that's just stupid.
What it means is that you haven't played the best shooter this year so far.
I own and enjoyed Metroid Prime 3, it's a shooter with signature Nintendo creativity. But it operates in the context of a FPS, and frankly even if you could shoehorn it into a subgenre it still wasn't as entertaining as just about all of the titles you dismissed above.
He wouldn't like COD4 anyway.
On-topic please. And by that I mean Mario Galaxy.
My point is, shut up or talk about Mario.
Back on topic, has anyone found any more green stars? I've only found one so far and I'm interested in these "Trial Galaxies."
Spoiler tagz plox.
Zack & Wiki says you're very wrong.Quote:

ok. More to the point, Mario Galaxy is the only good first party Wii game.
O RLY?
Why do I have to hold A and B to make the text go a little faster? Why can't I just hold A like any normal game?
Why do they strip you of all extra lives you earned when loading a save, but then give you six free 1-Ups just outside the first dome?
Why do I have to manually save between levels?
Why do I have to listen to a really irritating warning sound when I'm low on life?
Great game so far, but I also miss the exploration-based gameplay of the last two Marios.
You're a horrible person.
You only have to hold A - at least that's how I've been doing it
I'm a big fan of the pure platforming feel this has. Anyone else remember the debacle that was Donkey Kong 64? Hyped to be the Mario-killer and all we got was more fetch/collection quests than I could stomach.
Donkey Kong 64 was amazing... for that type of game. Yeah, if you hate collection shit, it would be your worst nightmare, but if you love it, you'd think you'd died and went to heaven.
Compass, please don't bitch just to bitch. :(
You're right, most of it was just for that reason. I couldn't resist epmode's challenge.
That is straight up bull. Bioshock shits on it.
Bioshock is incredibly not overrated. I've heard the complaints (Which all amount to, OMG this game is too easy because if I die a lot IE suck bad then it doesn't really penalize me, and OMG intelligent steam power?) and honestly....how can that even ruin a game as amazing as Bioshock?
Frogacuda brought up how he would prefer for there to be less Zelda games and those are usually related only in a general sense. Half-Life is an ongoing story and there's only been two and two-thirds of a game released in the last nine years (plus four backstory games where you play as other characters, however you want to count those).
Has Mario really evolved in abilities between Mario 64 and Galaxy? Not at all. The gameplay differences between the two aren't exactly huge, the major changes are the world layouts and ideas behind the levels. Galaxy seems to me almost like the non-backpack stages of Sunshine with some gravity tricks, yet I don't think most people would consider that a bad thing even if Nintendo had released it as a Sunshine expansion pack.
Where I believe you're coming from is that a continuous story is often a crutch for developers to rehash the same game in a quicker fashion, and while I can agree that does happen more often than it should I don't think planning for sequels nor writing for the future is a bad thing. If it's a good game it'll be so regardless of the story, and I feel a good game with a good story is a lot better than a good game with no story. No one will be denied the chance to play devil's advocate.Quote:

So does Valkyrie Profile 1 and 2; there's no need to have played the older ones to understand the plot in later ones.
Granted, with a good game like GoW2, of course I'm dying to see how it resolves in 3 and being a good game fuels that desire to see the end. My budget hates me for it though.
FPS = First Person Shooter.
In Metroid Prime 3 you shoot from the first person view, just like you would in Halo 3, CoD4 or HL2. Now, we can go into detail about what kind of FPS it is; since not all of them are the same and should be divided into sub genres accordingly, but saying it's not an FPS is just really, really fucking stupid.
