Truth. If a customer has a bad experience with food, they may give the place another shot. If they receive bad service, they won't come back.Quote:

No one tips to be polite. You tip because it's customary to tip. Customary, as in it's one of our customs. It should be accounted for in the price of a meal when dining out in the US. Now, if the service you receive is really piss poor, then you've an option to lessen the amount all the way down to 0%.
Our miniumn wage is not meant to be a living wage (please don't start a political discussion because I said that anyone).
And also, Bill Cosby blah blah blah.
Please excuse arjue, his only frame of reference is making sneakers and wristwatches for 35 US cents an hour.
But in all seriousness, our tipping system is one that is gloriously capitalist. Someone gets fairly rewarded for a job well done and punished for a shit job. And even if you do get punished there's always the next table, or the next day. A self-correcting system where a bad waiter will by nature get weeded out. And "bad" is of course subjective, a bad waiter at a good restaurant is better than a good one at a diner.
The problem is that you're expected to tip for even mediocre service. The system sucks because these people are always "fake" nice to bait tips. I tip a tiny bit as is "custom", but I'll tip nicely if the person actually did a good job or made me feel like a valued customer instead of a purse to be harvested. I rarely get good service anyway because the employees feel they should get them no matter their performance.
If I saw Bill cosby sleeping in a field, I would so tip him.

Very few people vary how much they tip. Most people tip a set percentage and only go lower if the service is really terrible. People are either good or bad tippers, plain and simple. If tipping was actually equivolent to the actual quality of service then the system would work better.
By the way, I try and tip on a sliding scale, but it is near impossible if you are with somebody else because they insist that they tip *% and that is how much should be left. If the person is just ok I'll leave 15, if they are good 20, amazing and I go up, terrible and I go 10 and lower (occasionally I have left no tip for horrendous or rude service. - I feel terrible when I do this because it doesn't actually effect that one person so much because at most places tips are divided up among everybody)
Honestly though, what's wrong with them just being timely, getting your order right and bringing it to you and not being an asshole about anything? To me that's the threshold between bad and good service. The 15% threshold as it were. They don't fulfill a couple of those requirements above and I consider dropping how much I'm tipping. I don't expect to be treated like royalty, I just want it to be convenient. If they go above and beyond the call of duty, then they might get more, but I'm certainly not looking for them to do that. And so what if their being nice is fake? Do you need them to counsel you and empathize with all your emotions or something? Hold your hand and sing Kumbaya? Christ.Quote:

A good waiter/waitress does these things without thinking about it. Furyfox's problem is that so many waiters just put on a big fake smile and act real happy without actually putting much else effort wise into providing you with service.
Hey, I know good service makes a good meal great. I'm saying I don't expect waitpeople to kiss my ass. Fine dining yeah, expectations are higher; prices are higher; tips are higher.
