Bill Cosby is at it again

Black people tip poorly. As someone earlier in this thread said, a pretty good amount of them will even write in their final price and $0.00 in the tip line on the credit card receipt and not even give a shit. Then they come back and complain about the poor service they get because they say the waiter is racist, when the waiter is really just ignoring them because they tip for shit. I've seen this happen multiple times in multiple restaurants I've worked at. Fuck minorities that take advantage of their position.

As for arjue's ignorance of the tipping process, it's fairly common for most non-USA countries to not tip. Tipping is actually considered rude in some places. However, in those countries, the price of food is much higher as the price of paying a higher wage to the waiters is included in the meal price, whereas here in the US, they charge just enough to pay the bills, pay $2 an hour to the waiter, and let them have the tips. I personally prefer this American tipping system where you get to pay the worker exactly how much you think he deserves, rather than getting poor service as a result of a flat wage. Imagine if your waiters in the expensive restaurants you went to were just as crabby and lazy as they are in your local Best Buy.

This is absolute bullshit. As Hubbitron said, never, ever in my life have I gotten above ~15% from a large table. Ever. In fact, I receive far, far less than that, because they tip $10 for the $300 table thinking "wow, more than $10 for a tip seems like a lot." You get the waiters putting the 15% there a lot for a fucking reason. If they were really getting more without putting it there, the charge would not be there.

Oh and Bill Cosby is right. Lazy, irresponsible people (mostly the males) need to grow the fuck up, regardless of their color. Asians are generally stereotyped in positive ways. Other minorities can make that happen for themselves, but they need to stop blaming other people and get their own shit together first.

To start this, black people need to stop getting offended when people talk shit about ghetto trash and street thugs or deadbeat dads and all of that shit. White people don't get pissed when you talk about white trash or stupid rednecks. They know you're talking about white trash and stupid rednecks, not the entire race. The immediate knee-jerk self-defense, self-preservation response to anyone that talks shit about people that deserve to be talked about is holding everyone back.

Numerous times my aunt has payed over automatic 15% on large tables. Sometimes she just didn't do it though because she only had her credit card so she couldn't. But she waitressed for most of her life and is now very rich so shes a good tipper.

I don't understand why gratuity tipping is rising in the first place. Moving the dishes out of the kitchen requires the same amount of work that it did 5 years ago. If it's a %'s to begin with inflation is accounted for with the price of the bill. At any rate, forcing your customers to pay a tip means your wait staff doesn't have to put in the extra effort to get it.

I understand the idea of pre-payed gratuity because idiot tippers like arjue can't wrap their brain around the idea of it being a service that someone is going out of their way to provide you (in the case of drivers) but 20% of a bill is pushing the limits. 15% is high enough.

I'm wondering how it can become a standard. Everyone I know thinks it's 15% or in rare cases has no idea or has someone else tell them how much to give because they don't like math. If the majority of people think it's 15% though, then the standard is 15%. Unless I'm mistaken and most people think it's 18% now?

Yeah, I'm just saying 15% of a bill is enough for me. I don't understand why people are starting to think the same service is worth more to them now than it was in 1999. I mean, it's the same service. Hubbitron quoted 18% (although I think he's had more experience in food service than me, so maybe that's why).

If the service was exceptional then I think 18% isn't entirely unreasonable, but an expected 18% of your bill is crazy. Up here in Canada 10% is still the norm at most restaurants so that's probably why I'm a bit shocked to hear 18%. I tip more at steak houses than I do at, say, Swiss Chalet (chicken restaurant).

The tip average rises in direct relation to the expectation of service. Customers expect a hell of a lot more than they did 5 years ago.

15% seems to be the expected amount on the West coast but yeah 18% is pushing it. I generally give 15% unless the service sucks.

I would prefer North American society remove the concept though. I have worked enough shitty jobs that didn't have tips to make me feel no sympathy. I can understand getting tips if the wage is below minimum but here they have to give you at least minimum wage anyway regardless of the job type.

i never know if i should leave a tip at the chinese buffet......or really ANY buffet. i mean they take your plates and get you drink but you get your own food.
