McKENZIE, Tenn. -- Police have charged a mother and father with raping their infant the day after she was born, police said.


Jonathan Wayne Goodrum, 19, and Kristina Louise Sawyer, 18, are charged in the incident that officials said happened about six weeks ago at McKenzie Regional Hospital, where the baby was born, McKenzie Police Lt. Tim Nanney said.

While both parents have been charged, Nanney said Friday that the mother's role in the assault is unclear.

"I could not exclude her from being part of it, so I had to charge her also," Nanney said.

Nanney said hospital officials alerted police after a routine examination of the baby revealed injuries that included skin tears.

Police investigated whether hospital workers might have been involved.

"Based on the investigation, we ruled out everyone but the mom and the dad," Nanney said.

The parents are engaged to be married and had been living at a motel in McKenzie, about 110 miles northeast of Memphis, officials said.
