A Pile of Bad News from SNK USA

Rayman and Oddworld on PSX was the last noteworthy 2D games from the West I can think of, and oddly enough they are also among the best 2D games of the past decade (I know Rayman is pushing that decade thing, but TS).

If Western developers cared about 2D they would be trumping Japanese as easily as they are with 3D.

Yeah, it's not like there's a huge history of 2d Western graphic adventures, RPGs, complex strategy games, classic arcade shooters and platformers, thousands of Commodore/Atari computer games or stylish action/adventures like Out of this World or anything.

But yeah if we're just talking recent years it has gotten much worse. There's still the occasional niche 2d Western game.

Yeah, I was talking about nowadays. I'm well aware of the genre's previously rich Western history.

Speaking of which, I'd love another 2D Out of this World-style game to come along. :(

No, but the ROMS will after more companies start selling their old titles in VC and XBLA.

Lady Sia on GBA was really good, and I've always heard decent things about Shantee (sp?), which I think was after those two.

I'm fine with VC and XBLA if they offer something like upgraded graphics and they are saveable on something that can be removable and doesn't need any sort of online activation. Otherwise, I'm not paying to rent. Besides, I already have all the classics, no need to rebuy unless there is something new.

They're not going away. You just might have to dig a litter deeper if you want them. You can seriously find almost any game you've ever wanted to try on the internet if you're willing to put the effort in. Even PCE CD and Sega CD games are a lot easier to find than you'd think, heh. Once that data's out there and moving around, I don't think they'll ever be able to bury it.
