Games That Get You Stuck and Make You Cry

I had a bad experience with FFT, featured below. What are your worst "Past the point of no return" gaming moments? Name some games you've played where you've become stuck after a large time investment and have to either start over or give up on it.

I finally decided to start playing Tactics. I am 28 hours in, though by now it's more like 35 hours in though my save file still says 28.

In ALL that time I do what I did with FFTA; keep ALL the members of my party at around the level of my main character. That means I do most of the bar missions and a lot LOT of random battles. So over the course of those 28 hours my main character's level is only 26. 2-6.

So I roll up on the end of Chapter 3, without having any problems with any of the too-easy fights, and I get sucked into the once-you-go-in-there's-no-coming-out dungeon. I save over my one save file. I get to the end, where you have to fight that asshole Wiegraf, and I'm totally fucking stuck. My Ramza doesn't have auto potion, in fact I can't even use any potions beyond "potion." He's a level 8 Monk, 7 Geomancer, with a bunch of knight levels too. So I get creamed every fucking time.

I can beat his first form (If I'm INCREDIBLY lucky: I have to not get silenced and have him not guard anything) about 1 in 10 tries with about 150/305 hp, and then get decimated every time.

And every time I die I have to reset everything up just right so I can trick the first form into losing.

So I have some questions.

Question 1) Why can't you abort a dungeon and be taken back to how it was before the dungeon? Sure you could split save files if you realized ahead of time that you could get stuck, but why would the game throw you such a stupidly out of proportion challenge in the early stages?

Question 2) At the very least, why didn't they allow you to SAVE YOUR GAME during the dungeon setup screen? If I didn't have to reset my entire party for 12 minutes after every 20 minute "Run around the map and heal" attempt I might feel like continuing.

Question 3) Does anyone have a recommendation on what the fuck to do?

Because I'm not fucking going through another 30 hours to get to this point for at least a year.

Don't blame FFT for this. Why in the world would you even do this?

Besides, FFT, like most other RPGs and SRPGs, should be milked to death before you think about going into situations like that with any sort of finality or no way back.

Replay the first thirty hours, in fact, double it to sixty, and see how little you can progress in the story line during that time. You'll never have situations like this again.

I still have a save file of FFT where Ramza and the 4 common dudes are at Level 99 without advancing past Sweegy Woods. You can't go into this game unprepared.

No game should allow a player to become irreversibly stuck, especially after 30 hours of gameplay. Who is with me on this?

Alright let's make this thread something worthile. Name games you've played where you've become stuck after a large time investment, and you never finished the game because you didn't want to start over.

Not anyone who grew up playing Sierra adventure games....or any PC game for that matter.

You know if I had more than one slot free on my memory card I would've been pulling the dual saves. :( This bites.

No game will ever protect people from their own stupidity. Sorry.

That's not true. Games are tested to prevent player stupidity from ruining the game. It's one of the principles of good game design.

For example, putting a confirm window up when you go to save over a game file or to delete a game, and having the crusor rest on the default position of "no." That's not pure common sense from a developer standpoint, but it ought to be.


I ventured into Gamefaqs looking to see if there were any tricks that could get me through, but apparently this fight is the hardest in the game and I'll just have to abandon the file.
