I was referring to the Canada/US border as per Melf's original post. But you can read that as "...long before security was allegedly/supposedly stepped up post-9/11" and the point still stands; although I've personally gone through Detroit and Buffalo a lot and have seen changes.

A charasmatic leader who can convince people that something is wrong(i.e MLK, Malcolm X,etc..) Just ignoring them does nothing.
