The point is that the 12 million immigrants are immigrants, i.e. not American. Outsiders. Just as Mexicans and Muslims are treated today, Germans, Poles, Chinese, Japanese, Irish, etc. were treated before.

A lot of anti-immigration talk from day one is rooted in racism.
