Not only did I break my rule and buy a domestic portable game for $40, I bought it at EB! No reward zone points for me. It was one of those situations where you just NEED the game RIGHT THEN. If you make it through that night, you'll be fine for weeks, but... well, I was weak. And it doesn't end there...
I saw a used Popolocrois (too tired to do the capitalization) that looked near-perfect for $25. I always still see it new for $40. So I got that. It gets worse...
While I was at work, I bought IIDX 9th Style on ebay for $45 (sealed, so this was a decent deal). Then of course that meant I had to finally get an import PS2 and memory card (I chose the silver because play-asia was out of white), and, hey, while I'm buying imports, might as well toss IIDX RED in there as well.
Then, when I got home, I found a package waiting for me, and I couldn't remember what it was. I eventually realized it's Metal Saga that I bought a few days ago.
An intervention is in order.
I'll play some Monster Hunter tonight, and be back with impressions. I'm excited though. It's gonna be rad.
[edit]: hmm, maybe this thread is about Compass.
Take this for what it's worth, but GI gave this a 4/10.
You spent a lot of money on useless shit, Compass, though I can't argue with a Japanese PS2, if and only if you're going to use it for shmups and fighters, which you won't.
Shmups, yes. Fighters, no (burned out on SFII in the arcades in the '90s). And nah, nothing I bought is worthless. I needed all of it -- just not neccessarily all at once like that. And GI's score means little to me, although I can definitely already see where a lot of MHF complaints are coming from.
Okay, put a little play-time in, but not much.
First of all, the game just feels rough. Like we got an early build that still has a few months development left in it. The interface is ugly and amateurish, using an unattractive scale-like background for the windows, and a god-awful font. The controls could use some serious work. Admittedly, a lot of this is due to the PSP's ludicrous lack of a second analog stick, and the awkward placement of the existing one. Still, there's no option to change any part of the control scheme which is a HUGE oversight. The graphics are decent -- maybe on par with a late-gen PS1 game -- but nowhere near the revelation other reviews would have you believe. Aside from overall level boundaries, nothing has collision -- you clip through anything and everything. Load screens are plentiful.
Still, the game so far is enjoyable. The player's guild card is very nicely done with four pages of achievements (wish the rest of the interface looked like this). The few peaceful dinosaurs I killed so far were way fun to hack into with my gigantic (seriously, Cloud Strife would be envious) sword, writhing around in agony on the ground before finally laying still (reminds me of Silent Hill). Character creation is moderately robust (enough for me anyway -- I was able to make a girl with a cute face, cute voice, and purple hair, so I'm happy). There seems to be absolutely TONS to do as far as quests to undertake, weapons and skills to improve, trophies to earn, etc.
I need to put much more time into it before I dole out a score or anything, but so far I'm pleased. Four more months in the oven with generous polishing applied would've made this one exceedingly awesome though.
Oh yea I forgot about the hilarous clipping. Nothing like watching your character totally move through mountains, trees, slight uphill curves on the ground, while searching for items.
Don't worry you'll get tired of killing the peaceful animals once you realize you don't really need them for anything other than meat. Then once you've upgraded your weapon maybe 3-4 times you'll see how rediculous and hard the items are to get for more upgrades.....unless they fixed that.
So they have skills you can learn now? Does it have some sorta level up system now too? The ps2 one you could only lvl up weapons or upgrade em and armor. I'm sure if you can get online that might make getting parts more easier....unless they kept so of the stupid rules for non tradeable items.
Alright, so glutton of punishment that I am I tried this and Metal Gear Acid this weekend. Metal Gear Acid was of course the absolute, most boring, worst game I've played in months. I wont go into details because it doesnt deserve it. Kojima should be kicked in the nuts for letting that disgrace even come out.
Monster Hunter on the other hand, I personally thought wasnt too bad. Basically feels, like a much deeper version of PSO. Which to me is perfect for a portable game. Something to pick up and run through one of hundreds of quests for a few, then go about doing whatever. The gathering of items and meat to keep stamina up, slows down the pace a little bit, but you can stock up prior to going to the field. I didnt see any of this clipping that was mentioned. at all. and I played through the first 10 or so quests. The environments and graphics looked pretty good to me actually. I've always hated the analog on the PSP, so I wish I could switch the camera view with the directional button on this, but whatever. Only other thing I worry about is being able to progress on the higher level quests without a party, but from what I hear its doable if you play smart. Oh, and supposedely the amount of rare stuff you need to make certain items was dropped from the insane amounts in the PS2 version.
But, yeah, when this game falls onto the cheap clearance rack, ill be all over it. Theres a lot of gametime to be had with this, if a person so desires.
And, Im still all, lol! ,about teh PSP Megaton from last week because I expected something way awesome, but if part 2 comes out here with infrastructure, I think Ill give it a go.
How long did you play Acid for? I'd recommend giving it a chance and learning all the mechanics, it's pretty deep and I thought the Metal Gear gameplay translated really well to a turn based game.
I barely touched this game (got distracted by other stuff), but it's one I keep thinking about, and reading about online. I'm really looking forward to going back and putting some quality time in. Right now, I'm caught up in Legend of Heroes.
