Out this week. Who's in? Supposed to be even better than the PS2 version.
My cheapness gene won't let me buy a domestic portable game for over $35, so post up if you see it for less, thanks.

I like how your threshold is conveniently lined up with Nintendo's first party DS game price. Coincidence? I think not.
I'm just realistic about my strength to resist new fun games. You're right, if the average new DS game was suddenly $45, that might magically become my new threshold.
But unlike the rest of life, this thread is not about Compass.
"Supposed to be even better than the PS2 version"
WELL HOLY SHIT! Now I can throw away those thousands of other games that are too
This is one of those rare games that makes me wish I had a PSP to play it on. I never even played the PS2 version, but it seems like it would probably be better suited to a portable. Plus, I love the graphics and I love Capcom.

I'll pass. I bought the PS2 verison so I would have something to tide me over for ....some other game to come out which I don't remember.
Unless capcom has fixed a TON of tedious game play and major bugs, I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone. One of the major problems I had with the game was, I could never get it to play online. I first tried it on my first PS2 with modem on a cable connection. I never have had any trouble playing online with any other games. Hell the game even said it was configured right and would let me log in so far. Eventually I gave up and put the game to rest. So I ended up having to get a new ps2 and figured I'd give it a try on the new one. Same problem and the capcom tech staff have no clue why it won't connect.
Other problems: Gathering items to make new weapons is kinda cool, but GOD damn if some of the items you need are RARE as hell and usually need TONS of em to make a damn upgrade. Loading times get pretty annoying. Doing some simple tasks can try your patience after awhile like for example Cooking meat, searching. Time limits on the stages sucks and limits your time to explore and search for the much needed items.
I could probably go on and on. The graphics and sound are good, but damn stupid gameplay, animation and bugs really drags it down.
Speaking of dinosaurs and Capcom, does Capcom still have the rights to Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, or has that gone the way of Alien Vs. Predator and The Punisher?
Capcom needs to make a true sequel to Dino Crisis 2. Fuck Monster Hunter and fuck Cadillacs and Dinosaurs.
I concur.Quote:

Not only did I break my rule and buy a domestic portable game for $40, I bought it at EB! No reward zone points for me. It was one of those situations where you just NEED the game RIGHT THEN. If you make it through that night, you'll be fine for weeks, but... well, I was weak. And it doesn't end there...
I saw a used Popolocrois (too tired to do the capitalization) that looked near-perfect for $25. I always still see it new for $40. So I got that. It gets worse...
While I was at work, I bought IIDX 9th Style on ebay for $45 (sealed, so this was a decent deal). Then of course that meant I had to finally get an import PS2 and memory card (I chose the silver because play-asia was out of white), and, hey, while I'm buying imports, might as well toss IIDX RED in there as well.
Then, when I got home, I found a package waiting for me, and I couldn't remember what it was. I eventually realized it's Metal Saga that I bought a few days ago.
An intervention is in order.
I'll play some Monster Hunter tonight, and be back with impressions. I'm excited though. It's gonna be rad.
[edit]: hmm, maybe this thread is about Compass.
Take this for what it's worth, but GI gave this a 4/10.
You spent a lot of money on useless shit, Compass, though I can't argue with a Japanese PS2, if and only if you're going to use it for shmups and fighters, which you won't.
Shmups, yes. Fighters, no (burned out on SFII in the arcades in the '90s). And nah, nothing I bought is worthless. I needed all of it -- just not neccessarily all at once like that. And GI's score means little to me, although I can definitely already see where a lot of MHF complaints are coming from.
Okay, put a little play-time in, but not much.
First of all, the game just feels rough. Like we got an early build that still has a few months development left in it. The interface is ugly and amateurish, using an unattractive scale-like background for the windows, and a god-awful font. The controls could use some serious work. Admittedly, a lot of this is due to the PSP's ludicrous lack of a second analog stick, and the awkward placement of the existing one. Still, there's no option to change any part of the control scheme which is a HUGE oversight. The graphics are decent -- maybe on par with a late-gen PS1 game -- but nowhere near the revelation other reviews would have you believe. Aside from overall level boundaries, nothing has collision -- you clip through anything and everything. Load screens are plentiful.
Still, the game so far is enjoyable. The player's guild card is very nicely done with four pages of achievements (wish the rest of the interface looked like this). The few peaceful dinosaurs I killed so far were way fun to hack into with my gigantic (seriously, Cloud Strife would be envious) sword, writhing around in agony on the ground before finally laying still (reminds me of Silent Hill). Character creation is moderately robust (enough for me anyway -- I was able to make a girl with a cute face, cute voice, and purple hair, so I'm happy). There seems to be absolutely TONS to do as far as quests to undertake, weapons and skills to improve, trophies to earn, etc.
I need to put much more time into it before I dole out a score or anything, but so far I'm pleased. Four more months in the oven with generous polishing applied would've made this one exceedingly awesome though.
Oh yea I forgot about the hilarous clipping. Nothing like watching your character totally move through mountains, trees, slight uphill curves on the ground, while searching for items.
Don't worry you'll get tired of killing the peaceful animals once you realize you don't really need them for anything other than meat. Then once you've upgraded your weapon maybe 3-4 times you'll see how rediculous and hard the items are to get for more upgrades.....unless they fixed that.
So they have skills you can learn now? Does it have some sorta level up system now too? The ps2 one you could only lvl up weapons or upgrade em and armor. I'm sure if you can get online that might make getting parts more easier....unless they kept so of the stupid rules for non tradeable items.
Alright, so glutton of punishment that I am I tried this and Metal Gear Acid this weekend. Metal Gear Acid was of course the absolute, most boring, worst game I've played in months. I wont go into details because it doesnt deserve it. Kojima should be kicked in the nuts for letting that disgrace even come out.
Monster Hunter on the other hand, I personally thought wasnt too bad. Basically feels, like a much deeper version of PSO. Which to me is perfect for a portable game. Something to pick up and run through one of hundreds of quests for a few, then go about doing whatever. The gathering of items and meat to keep stamina up, slows down the pace a little bit, but you can stock up prior to going to the field. I didnt see any of this clipping that was mentioned. at all. and I played through the first 10 or so quests. The environments and graphics looked pretty good to me actually. I've always hated the analog on the PSP, so I wish I could switch the camera view with the directional button on this, but whatever. Only other thing I worry about is being able to progress on the higher level quests without a party, but from what I hear its doable if you play smart. Oh, and supposedely the amount of rare stuff you need to make certain items was dropped from the insane amounts in the PS2 version.
But, yeah, when this game falls onto the cheap clearance rack, ill be all over it. Theres a lot of gametime to be had with this, if a person so desires.
And, Im still all, lol! ,about teh PSP Megaton from last week because I expected something way awesome, but if part 2 comes out here with infrastructure, I think Ill give it a go.
How long did you play Acid for? I'd recommend giving it a chance and learning all the mechanics, it's pretty deep and I thought the Metal Gear gameplay translated really well to a turn based game.
I barely touched this game (got distracted by other stuff), but it's one I keep thinking about, and reading about online. I'm really looking forward to going back and putting some quality time in. Right now, I'm caught up in Legend of Heroes.
You actually managed to get caught up in LoH? Props. I thought it had its charm, but I had to trudge through that one.
Oh, there's definite trudging involved. Bandai's laziness in the localization, and the general lack of gameplay streamlining, or any accoutrements whatsoever angers me. But I'm really looking forward to the Moonlight Witch, so I gotta trudge.
Through to Level 6 , I think. The warehouse CBR-026 or whatever where you have Teliko in your party.Quote:

I tried Strider. I remember you saying good stuff about this. But fuck, it just wasnt fun. If the Metal Gear name wasnt on this I wouldnt have even tried to get that far in it.
Ive gotten my revenge though. A customer came in today and tried to buy this and I vented about how shit this game was and told him to save his money for Portable Ops. He saved his money and thanked me for being honest.

Many here say it sucks because they played the mh for ps and think well all Add ons suck, well not inthis case, if you are aware of the history of the series G was the prime game to date for ps2. Why? well it improved and fixed everything that had a bugin it, as teh hey iam sorry for shooting your foot no hard feelings?
The PS2 G verison was only in Japan so in small words you woulda see it if you buy a JP PS2 or have a mod chip w.e.
Alot of what people do now adays whine about the presention(my grammer isnt perfect o wellz) On eveything being well the most pickyest critics since the guy who wanted a better potato (the potato chip story) but in th end it was the same freaking potato just looked differnt. Alot of Games dont require Grafs period to even be great (notes Rez and look it became a big seller omg orly?!).
The Setting of the Series MH is primal, survival, the kind of well if you dont eat you die, and well yea its kinda like RL you need the top or next to best items to live. MHF is actually very great game for many reasons for the class of Action RPGS, its very creative, it requires you to have good reflexes, and Work hard for your Weapons and armor, like Every and i do mena Every RPG should Do Why make the game easy and someone beat it in 5 hours and put it down. Who cares if the Grafs do not meet toyour liking it isnt about Graf it about Gameplay thats what a Freaking game is all about, not hte Gold letterig or the Crappy meaningless story lines that many of the *top games* offer.
Another note here is Dont hate it til you beat it, if you cant beat it dont goe emo about it, give us a 100% reason to see your view "Oh its soo hard daddy and i cant cheat!!" so rather then give you a Crappy halfass review of it and say oh ..well i looked at the gamebox and think it stinks ....so yea you dislike it too ok?
So here is my Review of hte game Reguardless of my points on Grafs
Music 8.0-10.0~
Very Suiting say the least and none of the unrequired spaming re peated crap when your in the field killing
When you Fight a Wyvern or Boss Beast You hear music change giving the battle a very dramatic setting which i kinda enjoy.
==============
Gameplay 10.0 - 10.0~
Controls are very right to the point once you mastered one of the many weapons you can pick (like Shield & Sword) Though weapons have slight downtimes it doesnt quite make the game that bad, thats actually how you should have for most weapons in any game honestly if i were to swing a big sword over my should i couldnt be able to lung the sucker Quickly to regroup for a up coming attk. Showing pure Phys.
Another Feature which is kinda niffty is when you swing a weapon in Aoe Stance you Can knock a Buddy Across the Area making your timing for atks more realisc.
The Monsters A.I. Are Super Smart over then a Monster Charging and keep on running(some of them do anyway) Some mid stop and turn to you and charge again, if a Monster Senses you around it will attk.
Quests Are Very callenging at some cases making the game Longer for hour wise, And All quests Are Repeatable (except Kirin due to its a Random pop).
The Style of You gotta work for your Armor makes you wanna work harder to earn more and more Items to make the Suits of glorious Armor sets and Weapons, of course the items required as the weapons Lvl up and enhabce is gonna get harder you think it will get easyier to own a Good weapon? Rome wasnt Built in a day ya know! So Start Building Rookie
:bang:
Style~ 8.5 - 10.0~
To put it easy, The PSP isnt a Freaking xbox so get over the Graf part lol
and if there is nice gameplay and you can see the enemy why should you Cry over your picky egos for GOOD LOOKING games? When its Gameplay that should be your Real consern.
The Game offers Color (reason the games font is kinda simple is due to its more of a Primial Setting meaning thats just the style of the game oh wellz...)Well to the colors they are Very nicely placed into the games Structure,
the Quests Are straught Forward, but require Practice and learned mistakes to overcome as the Star(Ranks) goe higher.
The Armor and Weapons all look very ether Ugly, Stylish, or BadA$$
The NPCS all look interesting and offer (The Sim mubbles :P) Decent info and Good tips for gameplay.
You got a Harvest Moon Farm Setting for Intown meaning Harvest Away(giving the feeling of Animal crossing with Sharp pointly blades)
Combat Can make you ether Cocky ....or the guy who got his butt kicked by a rampaging Pig.
:chick:
==========
In Closing my Rant+ Review~
I play and love the game for its Gameplay alone and not anything to do with the Graf detail
I have gave the Game a Better and Fair review based on my EXP in playing the game for 8 weeks
The Game is Very Differnt from Other Action RPGS i have seen Meaning you Upgrade your Armor and Weapons Rather Then your own char and able to trade in a Sword for a Gun,
I have a Myspace Group for People who gave ti a change and needhelp with a few things so check it out
http://groups.myspace.com/MONSTERHUNTERFREEDOMFANZ
And a MHF URL For Guilds and Waysto Beat differnt monsters that i placed together threw Research and time
http://www.freewebs.com/agerbon/ (too cheap to afford a Real Url for the Site lol)
I Dont Say how you guys feel about the game is bad but i just feel you Dont give it a chance because your very picky.
:link:
Peace and if you wish to debate the game mroe with me email me ;)

By "callenging" you mean tedious, boring and frustrating, then your totally right. Nothing spells "callenging" than having to buy pick axes, find a good mining spot, have said pick axe break in one blow randomly and STILL not get the mineral you need. Then repeat and STILL not get the mineral and run out of axes and have to finish the stage and go buy more and repeat. WHAT FUN!
There isn't really much skill in getting some of the parts, I don't get what part is supposed to be fun. Its not like you gotta practice moves to push a button to search a bone pile and get mass amounts of stuff you don't need.
HOLY CRAP I AM INTO THIS GAME.
From a gamefaqs review:
I think that pretty much says it all.Quote:
It's so much better than PS2 MH. For those who have nothing to do than wait to watch your favorite TV programme, play MHF. It take's so much time you don't even notice your roast chicken is burning.
I literally laughed out loud SIX TIMES IN A ROW as I killed six different harmless pigs who were just minding their own business with my GInormous sword and then harvested their corpses. It was satisfying and hilarious. Yes. This game rules.
Like Animal Crossing back in April, I've been playing this exclusively pretty much every break at work for the last couple weeks.
Remember how fun it used to be to level up in RPGs? You felt like your hard work was paying off and you were really getting stronger, bit by bit. Eventually -- between playing your 100th and 500th RPG -- that feeling wore off, and it was, "Yay, another level. Who cares, let's get this over with."
Well, with Monster Hunter, that feeling of progression and satisfaction as you gradually get stronger is BACK (ironically in that you don't have traditional level ups in MH). The game is TOUGH -- especially once you start getting into the real hunting missions in which you have to outsmart and trick your vastly overpowered dinosaur opponents. But the game excels at patting the player on the back for getting better, and rewarding them for their hard-won efforts. This makes the whole thing extremely addicting.
I liked it.
Its perfect for a portable handheld game.
Indeed. But then, the PSP's wonderful sleep-anywhere feature makes nearly all games portable dreams. The DS has this as well, but I don't find myself using it nearly as much. Maybe because games boot up so quickly on the DS.
I tried so hard to fall in love with the original MHF, but a few glaring flaws prevented the affair from truly taking flight.
I'm happy to say that with the sequel, the most debilitating of the problems is 95% fixed! I'm talking of course, about the INSANE and FREQUENT load times. In mission, where they were most irksome, they've been reduced from 10 to 15 seconds, to a mere 1 or 2! I've only played an hour or so, but I think this one's got the potential to be as addicting as Puzzle Quest, and as long-lasting as an MMO. I'll update with more impressions later.
I've always wanted to try the series and it sounds like I might finally give it a go with MHF2.
Most likely when it's a bit cheaper though, 40 bucks is too much for me I think.
I picked it (the original MHF) up recently at Toys R Us for, like, $8 or something. So if you just want to try the game, and don't care if it's part one or two, check there.
Haven't played much of it, but have enjoyed what I've tried so far.
~ OMG ~
I wouldn't have expected it, but the music in the sequel is great. Much more memorable than the first, which wasn't bad at all. The guild hall song alone will make me boogie all night long. It's mostly the flutes! ::dances::
I want it bad, but doesn't 2 not have online play? That's pretty lame if true.
First one didn't have infrastructure either though. There's an Xlink Kai workaround if you're really serious about online play. I just go it alone.
Some impressions from me:
-the art style is unique, not something I'd except out of a j developer, seems like a setting I'd see from a western dev
-speaking of the settting, it's pretty neat. the primal/eskimo/native feel is a nice diversion from your typical jrpg craps
-reminds me a bit of a cross between diablo 2 and phantasy star online
-this game is difficult, but I don't know if it's unfair, it just has a really high learning curve
-feylines are pretty dang cute
-I love fishing in games, this sits at about the middle of the pack compared to other games
-lots of stuff to keep you occupied: fishing, cooking item creation
-a bunch of different weapons that all play totally different, that is neat
-daunting to the new player due to all the different gameplay systems, weapon/item upgrades/purchases, etc
Overall it's pretty neat, but man does playing it on the psp jack up my hands after a while.
I'm still working through the rank * missions, and just went to the jungle stage for the first time. I think I'll take the tigerex mission today.
Also, longswords are my fave so far I think. Bows seem neat too.
Longswords are nice, but the all-powerful battle horn is the only weapon to use. Speed up status effects alone make it the best weapon ever.
James
I am working through the ** missions now.
I died fighting a huge boss Congala, it was pretty disappointing 'cause he was nearly dead.
Still sticking with my longsword (upgraded iron longsword 'grace' btw).
The pacing for the combat on this is really unique and refreshing, it's not easy by any stretch of the imagination though.
DIE KHEZU!
Rank *** missions here I come. :D
I think the reason this game doesn't get more recognition is that it is really difficult, with tons of stuff to do in the beginning, and the learning curve (even though from what I've read it's better in this game) is pretty brutal.
I'm still sticking with the longsword, though I was thinking about making building up a nice hammer or maybe a bow. We shall see what we can see.
Seriously, do a few re-run missions experimenting with the stat effects from playing the hunting horn. No fatigue loss and faster running alone means you'll probably never switch back.
James
The long sword looks cooler though. :/
Monster Hunter Freedom 2 is my personal liquid crack.
I logged in 790hrs on MHF1 and im up to 200 on MHF2.
The game is very unforgiving at time. Some of the beasties can feel cheap. But once you really learn their pattern. There favorite attacks. And most of all Weaknesses, you really start pwning them.
As for the Gathering complaint.
Yeah. it can be annoying at times. But that i what the Pokke farm is for. Its starts out basic but you get upgrades for better stuff. There is a mining spot, bug catching spot, and a fishing spot. You can get the common to rare stuff from the farm with relative ease. And the higher up you get in quests and Hunter Rank the more upgrades you get.Which of course give you better stuffs.
The game honestly takes time to really get into the meat and potato's of the game.Which is why alot of reviewers dont realy give it a good score. They usually have no idea how to play, and get killed by the easiest of mobs. They get frustrated and give it bad scores.I think alot of reviewers go into it with a "ill hack and slash and win" attitude. Which will get you K.O'ed quick. It honestly does take some strategy to kill some of the wyverns. Especially in the G Rank level of quests. Were no matter how much Def you have you can still get 2 shotted.
Weapons?
The Dragonwood Horn is my favorite. Attack up x2,mega juice, and health+50.
Bows although are kind of slow to kill some wyverns, Destroy stuff with relative ease.
All in all i love this game. I completed all the Villiage Elder quests and i am Hunter Rank 5 working on getting to 6. Any questions you can throw my way and i will gladly assist.
JBNagis
My only real complaint with the game is the controls. Camera stick and lock-on and I'll have no complaints, and in fact might as well surgically implant the game into whatever system it comes out for. I'm still waiting for Monster Hunter 360 with full Live play.
James
Camera Stick would be nice. Instead of using the D-Pad. You get used to it but its uncomfortable.
As far as lock on im kind of against it. General location is okay. But one of that strategies is that different monster parts take different amounts of damage. And have different elemental def.
Example:
Gold Rathian.
Main elemental weakness is Thunder.
So you grab a thunder weapon. Now if your using say a Great Sword or a Long Sword than you would hit the wings. Its wings are really weak to blade weapons.
Now if your using a Hammer or a Hunting Horn than you going to mainly be attacking the head. The Heads blade def is higher than its Hammer/HH weakness. So a Hammer will do more damage on the head than a GS will. Even if the Great Sword has a higher power rating.
If your using a Gunlance/Lance than wings or head is a viable option. Lances/Gunlance have both melee and blade attack characteristics. So hitting the Wings or the Head will be effective. The lock on would kind of defeat those options. unless its done right.
Bows/Bowguns could get away with a lock on. As long as precision aiming is not interrupted. The biggest thing about the ranged weapons is Bullet/Arrow placement. This is especially important when using Pierce shots,Crags or Cluster Bombs.Alot of wyverns bullet/arrow weakness is the back or stomach. And aiming really takes advantage of those weaknesses.
JBNagis
Oh, I definitely agree that a lock-on would take some tweaking to allow specific body-part focusing, no question. I've just been in too many fights where the main opponent wasn't the creature I'm fighting but the camera that refused to let me get a bead on the thing that's killing me. It doesn't take many of those to make me decide a game is more trouble than it's worth, but Monster Hunter has enough going on elsewhere to make me put up with it.
James
Oh god i know what you meen. There have many times i've died for the simple fact the camera went spastic on me.It got caught on EVERYTHING. and god forbid you get stuck in a corner.
MHF2 has almost fixed this problem. What happens is when you get into a corner or on a wall. The camera will pan back and almost stretch the field. So that instead of going spastic it gives you a much wider view of things. The first time i did this it was kind of disorienting. Especially when it goes back to regular camera view afterwards.
There have been very few times that the camera went spastic. And that was only for half a second as the camera panned itself back to correct itself.
JBNagis
Yea I don't think there was ever a time that I've noticed in my 20 some hours of play when the camera went wonky.
A dual analog setup would be a bunch better, but as it I've learned to adjust the camera in between enemy attacks, or when a combo is finishing. I tried doing the index finger on the dpad, thumb on the analog stick like I read some people do, but it didn't seem to be worth it.
I am bumping the shit out of this, fuck all of you.
Compass was so ahead of his time, I wish I had paid attention to this back in 20 oh 6. This game is awkward, tedious, has shit controls, has a shit camera, virtually no learning curve (more like a learning mountain) but once you get all up ins and you are wrecking shit it is so good in such a weird way. I guess Compass was right on time and I am just super late!
The weapons and armor don't really need a lot of rare items until you get to the end game G-rank Rath rubies and shit, so I'm not sure if the dude complaining about that before was up that high or if he was trying to scrape up monster bones without ranking up. Breaking into the next rank gives you the new mats you rarely saw before and now need to make new shit in abundance.
I've been talking about this game a lot lately; been playing it for maybe the past two months. I just finished off the 4 15-minute-round Fatalis quests to unlock the Yian Garuga and dual Kirins 8 star G-rank Guild quests. Once I finish those up I will be totally done with this game in every way and can move on to Freedom Unite, which as I understand is a huge upgrade from this first one. I think in the end I will have put around 250 hours into this POS. I am super excited about this.
The worst part of the game is probably the armor system. All I want to do is make a consolidated set because they all look pretty amazing, but the way the stupid stats are distributed you have to pick and choose parts from all over the place and you always, always look like an asshole.
The only exception so far has been the set I made with High-grade Earplugs and Quick Sharpening for Fatalis which is just the Rathalos Soul Set with a couple of Black Belt pieces thrown into the mix. Looks awesome and tames my redhead's wild hair into a stylish ponytail.
Ask me anything about Freedom, I have this game on fucking lockdown at this point. Can't wait to start at the bottom in Freedom Unite; now that I know the rules my ascent will be so much more efficient.
You are crazy, the camera is the real monster in this game. It's a real, floating object that can be dislodged by trees, rocks, walls, you fucking name it. Everything makes it go nuts all the time. You need to constantly babysit the camera while a dangerous ass dinosaur is busy trying to one-shot you and your clunky-ass super slow controls.
This is what you have to do. If you don't have full camera control at all times, just put the game down and walk away.Quote:
I tried doing the index finger on the dpad, thumb on the analog stick like I read some people do, but it didn't seem to be worth it.
That sounds SO AMAZING. I am so glad I decided to play the worst version first or else I'd never be able to go backwards.
I should also mention that I've been locally and sporadically playing with a friend to clear some of the tougher guild quests. At sometimes triple the hp of Elder quests these are definitely meant to be taken on by a group of hunters. You can still solo most of the fights, it's just made a lot easier by having not only twice the damage but also by splitting up the monster's attention so one person can drink, sharpen, etc.
TLDR
THERE'S MORE ON THE WAY
Do you plan to start with items in freedom or are you starting fresh? when i did freedom2 and unite i started with everything i had. I would honestly farm for the Akantor set. if you have that, than you are good for the first set of G*quests in Unite. What weapons do you use?Oh yeah, Akantor unlocks after you beat the rest of the stuff. Aka is annoying as all bloody hell. But his armor is the best in freedom. I believe its quick sharpening, high grade earplug and something else i forgot. The battery of my psp busted so i have to get a new one. im wondering if i should pick up monster hunter portable 3rd or not. Oh and the mother of all quests in any monster hunter to date is in unite. The quest is called monster hunter. you fight, a Rathalos,Tigarex,Naruga, and a Rahjang back to back in one go with a 50 min timer. that is a fun quest.
i just noticed that you were talking about freedom and not freedom 2. but i do belive you can port freedom items and gear into unite also.
Unite is just Freedom 2G, so I think you can bring your dude from one to the other intact.
From Freedom to Unite I think I keep all my zenny and anything under rank 4; the rest gets converted into tickets or something. I'll find out soon enough! Can't wait to have a cat helper, that sounds rad.
The cat is awesome and a pain at the same time. depending on the cat, it will get in your way, like throwing bombs at the wyvern, in the exact spot that you are at. But the cat is also great as the wyvern will almost always attack the cat first, before attacking you. so its a great distraction. especially for setting up traps and what not.
I really wish i could get my zdlan/xlink kai working. i would love to go on a few missions with you. As it is i have to solo everything. its fun, but not nearly as fun as when you have friends.
I have about 500hours into unite/2G. i actually had my 2G save converted into a unite save so i didn't have to start over.
Ugh, Monster Hunter. The series garners such love/hate feelings in my soul. I could write pages about everything it does right... and wrong.
I am impressed you were able to weather the first game's load times. They are out of control. 50 of your 250 hours have been spent in them.
I kept buying these -- Freedom 2, then Unite -- and had phases where I got *really* into them... but the suck kept outweighing the awesome in the end. So I never stuck with any of them past HR2. I also desperately wanted some OCD-ish way to track all the armor and collectables. Grids and checklists mayhap? I don't like having to consult some fan-made Wiki just to see the craftable weapons. Also, I couldn't get past the font. It made me rage.
I will probably buy The Third at some point to continue the cycle of insanity. I wish I was as patient as you.
im going to eventually get MHP3rd. but i have other things to buy. like a damn battery for my psp since my old one died. and a new xbox with skyrim and umvc3 for my xmas present.
How are you guys planning on getting around the language barrier if you import 3rd? Every single one of the thousands of items, bugs, ore and shit is in crazy moon language.
There's a full English patch made by fans, though that would also require a game download of dubious nature.
I wish they would release the HD update for PS3 in English, I'd play that.
Same way i got around it in MHP2G when i got that. i just worked around it. i just gathered EVERYTHING and eventually i would get what i needed. also everything in your storage is set up according to monster/type. so if im trying to make a purple hammer, i would assume that i needed them from the harder G rank quests and that usually did it. Also minegarde.com has a entire list of the items in english and japanese. so in case i couldnt figure it out, i did it that way. Honeslty the only reason i got unite when i had 2G for a year was i wanted to know the weapons name.
I had been putting it off because it is scary, but I decided to do my last Elder mission last night: Wyverns of Land and Sky. It's a gold Rathian and a silver Rathalos together, no items, Final Destination aka the Arena. A Rathian is a Rathian, they're all easy, but the stupid silver Rathalos acts like the Azure Rathalos. He's constantly flying around shooting fireballs and doing his poison dive-bomb bullshit.
I was wearing my wind resist HR1 Diablos Mail and used the Thundertip. Set foot inside the place and got destroyed very quickly. Picked up on the flow of the fight and managed to beat the Rathian but ran out of time before I could kill the Rathalos (50 min time limit, that is a lot of time running around like an asshole). Third try I destroyed the Rathian very quickly (15 mins) and had forever to torture that son of a silver bitch with all the flash bombs and traps I hadn't even used yet. It helped a lot to use the gold wyvern to block the silver one's attacks. Blocking the poison dive is a must, getting hit by that almost guarantees your death. It was awesome. Victory brings the materials for the Shining Wyvern Blade which is probably the highest raw damage sns (sword and shield for noobs). Good times.
Also finished off the quests in HR3, just need to clean up the stragglers in HR4 and 5 before I'm done. The last big challenge will be the Crimson Fatalis, haven't even looked at that dude yet.
Sns is far and away the best weapon type in MHF, but I've also made a few hammers and great swords because they're cool. What should I be going for when I start MH2/FU?
Monster Hunter FU is such an appropriate acronym.
well.....
I personally prefer Duel Swords and Hammers and bows. i love hammers. Knocking out a monster with a hammer and getting free head shots its the best.
I would say go for what you like as far as weapons.
As for armor, for the screamers get high grade ear plug. anything else just couple it with your weapon choice. Running is great for duel swords and hammers.
quick charge is good for great sword.def and def up is awesome for Lance/Gunlance. your a walking tank literally. nothing can move you.
As for quests, like i said, the Monster Hunter quest (final elder quest) will kick your monkey ass.
Rahjan is now always in super sayajin mode, and goes to lvl 3 when he's pissed.
Akantor with the new weapons and armor make him a pushover. Ukanlos will destroy you if your not patient with a good lance or fire hammer.
Basically what im saying is after playing unite, you will laugh at how easy the stuff in freedom 1 is.
I've always heard that the series got easier over time, not harder. Doesn't really matter, they're all going down anyway.
I love hammers but they can't KO in the first game so it reduces their usefulness there. I made a War Basher and I've been putting it to pretty good use lately. It's a lot of fun hitting with that triple pound; it does ridiculous damage.
Bows look interesting because I think they'll be what I wanted the bowguns to be, which is not ridiculously complicated. Seriously, gunning in MHF is so dumb. There are like hundreds of different guns that all hold different amounts and different types of ammos, can all be modified but, unlike every other weapon, can't be upgraded into a new weapon. Then you have to worry about crafting and keeping ammo when my box is full of stupid monster drops as it is, ugh.
The games didn't get easier so much as i think people just got better.
Hammers not ko'ing cuts down their usefulness a bit. but they are still boss.
Bows are good, but it can feel like forever when fighting solo. Knowing the monsters attacks inside and out is so important because most of the time the only place that you can hit them at that does any real damage is the face. so your constantly having to position yourself to where the monster is going to be after an attack to get that head shot in. hitting there legs, or wings isn't going to cut it with a bow.
protip with guns, only ammo that's important. cluster shot lvl 2. pierce lvl 1,2. that's it. All the other ammo is fluff, 50 wyvern claws and 50 sm bone husks and you can kill just about everything solo. pierce depending on the monster. Gravios gets molested by pierce shot lvl 2. Basically if you make profusion your set. Profusion in unite has rapid fire lvl 2 pierce so every pierce shot fires 3 shots. so you get triple the ammo for it.
Drops have been kind lately, I finished off a Golden Falchion and a True Black Dragon Sword. Now all I need is an azure ruby for the Odyssey Blade.
Only a handful of quests left to finish including Crimson Fatalis, dual G-class Kirins, some shitty Plesioths and Four Horns: Black Asshole Edition.
Training school, Elder missions, and all Guild missions including G-rank quests and Urgents are now complete. I need to fight the urge to keep playing this and just import my character to Freedom 2 and then Unite because it's the SAME FUCKING GAME just with so much more and there's no point to sticking around. I'll always have my save floating around if I feel like doing something crazy like unlocking every single title =3
I might!
I will miss this game. It's become such a dear old friend these past few months. Good thing the sequel is fucking identical.
It's not identical. And you should skip Freedom 2 and go straight to Unite.
I had to move my character to Freedom 2 so I could then move the F2 character to Unite, but yes that's what I'm playing now. Really just transferring my 300k+ zenni over since the new character creation options are so much better that my hunter looks nothing like she did originally. Unite is just 2G, it's all still Monster Hunter Dos.
The improvements are almost too numerous to list here; the game just got a thousand times better. To be continued in that game's thread at a later date!
MHP3rd is now 39.99 as a best of in japan. amazon has it with free shipping. new years day gift for me :)
The ios app reads like it's super well done? Is it or is it just monhunfan super well done?
I would like to know as well. There's no games I want to play on IOS right now.
It's getting excellent reviews. Controller support too.
