Secondly...the line that really makes no sense in there is, "we respect the hell out of Super Mario Bros., as long as we don't actually have to play the damn thing." LOL...SURE. Everyone at GI has played the original Super Mario Bros. about a million times by now, and they love the game just like everyone else in the world. If they don't want to play the "damn thing" then they have no business working at a video game magazine.
Now, as far as Super Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine go, they both suck. Actually, I thought Super Mario 64 was fun the first time I played it, and I gave it about an 8.0 (I would give Mario Sunshine a 6/10). However, after the first time I played it, I couldn't care less. Then everyone just went ahead and copied the collect-a-thon angle, and I really HATED 3-D platformers for YEARS because of it. Luckily games like Sly Cooper, Psychonauts, and Jak have made 3-D platformers fun.
I'm not one to feed trolls. I think they are a necessary part of the board. Boards are boring without trolls. :)Quote:

I can actually agree with this quote from them. Mario 1 fucking sucks to play now. It doesn't change that it ruled at the time and did a lot of great things for games.Quote:

GTA3, MGS and SMB are not overrated. The others are to some degree, perhaps, but not by much. The complaints are legitimate, and many made those comments when those games were released. But that doesn't mean they weren't very, very good games.

I'm 99% postitive Gamefan gave Zelda: OoT, RE2, MGS, and FFVII damn near perferct scores. Had they been around for the rest I'm guessing the scores would've been the same (although they'd have probably tried to give Katamari over a 100). Gamefan loved plenty of very high profile games. People want to pretend they had some exacting standards now but that's bullshit. They might have covered the occasional import or scored some obscure games higher than other publications but for the most part their scores fell in line with pretty much every other mag on the planet.Quote:

I'm probably even at the point where making funner cops and combat probably wouldn't push me over to buy a new one, either.

GF was know for overrating games quite frequently. Just a few examples -
Jan 99 -
Apocalypse for PS - 91, 93, 90. This game starring Bruce Willis was not very good.
Asteroids for PS - 87, 94, 90
Brave Fencer Musahi - 91, 85, 88
Bust A Groove - 97, 95, 94
Deception 2 - 95, 87, 89
Glover for N64 - 94, 88, 94
South Park N64 - 87, 85, 89
March 99 -
Silent Hill - 92, 96, 88
Syphon Filter - 97, 92, 94
Snowboard Kids N64 - 84, 85, 93
Sonic Adventure DC - 100, 100, 100
Just a few examples. I loved them b/c they stuck with Saturn longer then anyone else.
lol @ south park n64 getting high 80s.
I see no problem with this. It's still arguably the best horror game.Quote:

Thats when I knew it was over. Anyone could see that Stretch Panic was shit. I don't know why so many people on the board even bought it.Quote:

ff8. 66/100?

i looked in my january 2000 issue and the game isn't reviewed in it.
I found the issue (Sept. '99). In Viewpoint, ECM has nothing but derogatory things to say, but still gives it a 68. Dangohead mentions the graphics were nice, but goes on to say, "I found no enjoyment in playing this game", and gives it a... 78! Only Cerberus has mostly positive things to say, and doles out an 85. All three make derisive comments towards VII. I didn't re-read Eggo's full review, as it's four pages, but he gave it an 88.
so Zelda OOT & GTA3 update their games in 3D, do them right & deserve the all the praise.Quote:

Gamefan was probably the only Magazine to really give Sonic Adv. it's recognition.
Sonic Adventure was amazing at the time, if only for the Sonic and Tails levels.

It was good, but the best game ever? Come on.
Your mom's the best game ever.
Some of those scores seem crazy now, but I still like the fact that Gamefan was practically the only videogame magazine to treat games subjectively. Outside of their reviews I think most games generally got very similar marks from publication to publication, and it's the same way today. At least with latter day Gamefan the reviewers had defined tastes and went by that, rather than going down the old checklist.
I know I really loved Sonic Adventure when it came out. Haven't played it in years though.

.
I think EVERY game in that entire genre is overrated. Actually, I think that entire genre is lame. Why would I buy a game based on car battle when I could buy Mario Cart or CTR and get a real game and battle mode as a bonus!? Are you telling me Vigilante 8 and Twisted Metal are so much different or even better than Mario or Crash battle mode? I think not.
STFU. Best caveman simulator EVER. I'm getting a PS3 just so I can play it through HDMI.Quote:

lol.
I'm pretty sure I bought Tail of the Sun because of Gamefan, and it's one of my favorites. So, hey.
Dear God, 3D games age so much worse than 2D games.
yup. i tried to play Legend of Dragoon on my bros ps2 yesterday. he's only using s-video so the flaws shouldn't have been so prevalent. but they were, and my god was it ugly.Quote:

I liked GameGo's review methodology the best. GameFan's number scoring made no sense to me whatsoever... How can you praise one game and give it an 87, then trash another one and give it an 82? To me, a 5/50/C/*** should be average... not great, not bad.
Fixed.Quote:

Starcraft is good. Don't believe the hype.
StarCraft is fun, and still gets 1-3 hours a week out of me. I am just still boggled how anyone can say it isn't a good game.
Its called "trolling".
btw: I'm JoshWilkesBooth on Starcraft.
Look for me on US East.
After all these years, I've never played StarCraft online- just single player or local (in my home/dorm) net. Someday I will get the courage to get Zerg rushed online...
Dude, you don't even know what you're missing. Seriously.
If you'd like we can team up against the comp for a bit. Also, the map settings games are a lot of fun.
What the fuck?Quote:

Total Annihilation > StarCraft.
Son.
Aye, maybe, when it RAN.
You can't beat it. I had the tower all the way to the top and killed another 20 or so mammoths on top of that and it still wouldn't end (this took around 40 hours or so of extreme monotony). It was kinda neat at first but that game did not deserve 90s. The lack of an ending is fucking ridiculous. It gets insanely boring and repetitive after a few hours.Quote:
