I delivered for a few years because it was just fun. Montgomery, AL, the shit side of town, i did get robbed, but it was once in the three years i worked at the restaurant, and i delivered to some scary shit-holes. Other people weren't so lucky. One kid told me, "i wouldn't be out here unless i had a gun". Nice, since he was eight. He was black, so he was okay. The bosses loved me and gave me a raise whenever i came back, gave me good runs, gave me the day shifts, told me didn't have to deliver to the holes, etc.
Clinton, TN was sloooooow work, and there were several weeks where i ran open to close because i was the only driver that didn't quit. That was easy, but the tips really sucked. I barely put any milage on my car, and my checks were good so it didn't matter too much. The best runs were the ones a few miles in the middle of nowhere. I was never afraid of being robbed there.
Savannah, GA, same as Montgomery, except whenever it rained i had to drive through frickin' rivers to get to houses. Some guys got robbed, one guy on a run i almost took before i decided i wanted to get off the road. Another guy had a gun shoved in his mouth, but even he didn't quit. Besides the scary neighborhoods, it was nice, since some of the places were way out in the woods. That was another one where they gave me the day shifts after i worked for a few months. The boss was the biggest asshole ever, but somehow he was alright with me. The school runs on every Friday involved taking something like 60 pizzas to a school about 12 miles outside of our delivery area, plus an extra ten bucks for taking a big run, and some of the big runs (not many) would tip nice.
On those three, i had to have my brakes replaced every 6 months or so. Besides that, the driving wasn't too hard. Like i said, it was kind of fun. No one bothered you on the road, so as long as i wasn't taking forever, i could go wherever i wanted, stop for a soda, get food, whatever.
If you can, take the day shift. You won't make as much in tips, but you won't get robbed and the work's less crazy than the nights.
