As for my haul today, replaced my Ipod Nano with a broken screen + having ran it through the washing machine once by accident for a brand new one. I got a hard case also for it so the piece of shit screen doesn't shatter by tapping it lightly. I then went to CC, picked up Half Life 2 (which from what I've played so far, definately deserves all of the praise it has recieved), SSX On Tour, and Pirates.

Then I exchanged SSX and Pirates at Walmart for $60, and picked up an Itrip, and Shadow of Collosus for a total of $2.89. I <3 Circuit City sales.

Then I went to get money out of the ATM and found $20 on the ground in front of it. Easily my best haul of the day. Free money FTW.

Proof that June sucks: my big score was Bomberman for N-Gage. :P

There wasn't a third game that I really wanted, so I just ordered 2 copies of Ninja Gaiden Black in hopes of selling the second copy off - I'll give my TNL brethren first crack once it arrives in a week or so.

KOTOR (PC): I wish Bioware had bothered to scale the menu screens properly into higher resolutions; they're giving me some major eyestrain. But otherwise the game is every bit as awesome as I remember it being. This time I'm playing a male Light side Scoundrel/Guardian.

System Shock 2 (PC): I'm having issues with the resolution on this one, too. When I run this at the highest setting the game allows (1024x768), there's an ugly black bar at the far right of my native 1280x1024 screen. Bleh.

I got a good deal on it. If you are a member of Best Buy reward Zone you should have got a coupon for 12% off any one item. Throw in all the reward zone gift cards that expire in a few days and the buy 3 get one free on the movies I only ended up spending about $750 for everything with the 4 year warrantee.


I wasn't planing on getting it (think I posted a few time how i was going to wait for the PS3) but I like it. 5th Element was great.

This is true too. You should consider living it up a little more Morphix. With the money you spent on that player that will only look ugly, outdated and ridiculously overpriced in a short time, you could have taken an awesome brief trip practically anywhere in the world.

As someone that once was supported completely, took everything for granted, and then fell to poverty-level due to unforseen circumstances, let me say that you should think more carefully about what you spend money on. no, you don't understand. I come up with about half that every year just for a metal festival in atlanta each year. If I can do that in school with no job, everyone on this board can do so with in two or three years.

Hell it can even be done for free if you are smart about it. You can co-op for your major while in college, get a job in another country that will pay for your move (this does happen, highering people from the US makes companys feel special and is good PR), do religious mecionary trips, work for someone like FedEx or UPS that flys around the world, agree to teach english in another country, or join one of the armed forces.

The list goes on and on if you JUST want to travel. However if you want to fly first class and stay in a big hotel and pay a guy named Abooba to rub your back, yeah, you're going to need a lot of cash. But that shit is bullshit pampering and a huge waste of money to go to another country to get.

Jesus christ you're stupid. Plan out a trip to Europe for a month where you visit 4-5 countries. After you get done with all of the travel (plane ticket, train passes) and the cost for the hostels, you're not left with too much for food or entertainment if you're limiting yourself to $2500-3000.

My brother just spent 3 months touring Europe for $1200 bucks. So yeah, it can be done. In South America, you can't eat and drink $20 US dollars in a day, guaranteed, and that includes the tip.

Every couple of years I spend a month or two traveling the US for no better purpose than to do it. I rarely leave with more than 75-100 bucks, and I do just fine, I often even manage to bring a cool book or record or something home with me when I return.

Cheeks is right, it can be done if you want to see the real world and not the Carnival cruise lines version of it.

Ok, let's add this up.

~$800 for a plane ticket
~$900 for hostels
~$300 for Eurail Select Pass
~$50-100 for local trains
~$300 for food

So I was off by about $200-700. This also includes nothing more than being there. I'm sure I could hitchhike across Europe and sleep on park benches if I wanted to, but I don't.

You can do a lot better than $900 for hotels. The plane ticket is the only thing you absolutely can't avoid.

$900 is $30 per night, which is the going rate at most places for a 4 person room. You can get one for $20 a night that's like, 12 people to a room, from the sites I've come across.

Just because you don't want to do it that way, doesn't make those options suck or unrealistic. One of my best friends in highschool has already seen 5 different countries. He is the son of a brick layer (in a small town in MS, not a big city where that would pay well) and didn't have as much stuff as the rest of us. He doesn't have a fancy major either. He is in school right now for youth ministry. His major is ten times easier than mine or just about anyone here, and yet he as already seen several countries. He did so by doing missionary trips. None of the countries are hell holes. He always learns a lot and has a lot of fun on those trips. I think he even has a hot girl friend in brazil because of them.

Me, my school can get me a co-op job in all sorts of places. I'm hoping I can get high enough marks this year to go some place like Germany or Japan. Maybe England or some place like that.

These options are realistic for everyone, BUT they aren't realistic doing things the way you want to do them. See this is a lot like that thing with me and dating hot girls. This isn't just about the end goal, its also about doing things on your own terms. And you, like me, probably have every right to be aggravated and upset. Doing things on your own terms can make things very hard, if not impossible. You can't always get what you want, or do things in the way you want.

I'm not stupid (at least not about this). You are the one making traveling expensive for yourself. You made the list of how you want to do this. You chose each thing that will make it hard for you. Not me. I've never said anything about it being easy and cheep to go on road trips across all of Europe. Traveling doesn't have to be hard, but the way you want to do it, most likely will be.

There isn’t anything wrong with that, but you need to realize that you are the one that is making it that way.

Schlep seems right on the money with his estimates here.

I went hiking round the alps for a week with school and it cost me like 900 euros, all inclusive, including my train ticket down there ($100) and a guide (between a group of 12, maybe $50).
We ate the food the hostels gave us, which was included with the price of around 30 euros a night.
All other meals were organised by the guides.
And those hostels weren't good ones.
We slept I think 12 or so in one room at times, and the food...it wasn't good.

You could probably get a bit cheaper in main europe, but not a lot more.

Yeah, I've done it a couple of times. The last trip was to Puerto Rico and aside from the clubs, I had the time of my life. I'd recommend it to everyone with a hunger for scenery and hot bitches.

PSP games fit quite conveniently in the back pocket, if my drift is caught.

Upon further thought, you could easily live in Europe for $500 a month, IF you went to Eastern Europe, like Bulgaria and Romania.

And if you went there, you'd have to avoid the tourist areas, which are really nice places, but maybe only 30% cheaper than Western Europe.

So if you go to the cheap places, it's a dump. I mean completely. It's so poor there, you might as well go to Africa. We visited Bulgaria last summer, and we went off for a day into the real Bulgaria, and it's not a good place, and I would certainly not want to sleep in a room full of strangers there (remember "Hostel"???). I might have some photos, I'll post them up. It was certainly interesting to visit, but staying there and being there for a long period of time is not a good idea imo.
On the upside though, my family (4 of us) managed to get lunch for about $1 included drinks.

So seriously, you ought to stick to Western Europe, and if you stick there it's expensive. Europe is more expensive than the US on just about everything, apart from European products.

Truth. In regards to living in the city. I was just reading an article on CNN Money, NYC is the most expensive city on this hemisphere and its only T-10th (Moscow is #1). Of course that is not what this whole thing was all about.

What's the age ceiling on most hostels these days? 25? 30?

Back when I took my college jaunt through Western Europe I remember it being 25.

I think 30 sounds about right. Most have age-limits though that cap off at around 25-30 or so.

There's also that international hostel card thing I read about. It's supposed to help you save a bit more cash.

In the alps there are a lot of refuges, which are just hostels in more extreme places, where by law they must give you a bed, so even if the place is packed out, they put you in the corrider.
So if you're tripping round the alps you can probably be any age.
It was a fun trip.
