I've been meaning to give these games a fair shot for a long time, and just yesterday, I learned that there was a Japan-only PSX port of Stygian Abyss. Given that it came out five years after the original, I assumed that it might be enhanced in some way. There's really barely any info online about it, surprisingly.
Turns out it runs in a higher resolution, has polygonal hand and enemy models, and decent redbook audio.

(lol early PSX, yeah)
...And the problems are that most of the enemy models are really simple and barely textured, and there's no movement or animation interpolation so everything jumps around everywhere.
I'd probably play this version first if it weren't for the whole Japanese thing.
