I'm in Austin till Monday (6.12.06) and while I'm hanging out with a friend, it's pretty boring here so far (been here a day so far, played pool and walked down the accursed 6th St. and was thrown out of a few bars).
I figure this would be a cool way to meet some of you. =/
I think Aurora's near there.

The first one was uneventfull. I hadn't had much to drink last night at all, I went into a place called Shakespere's Pub and had one glass of Hefeweisen. My friend was outside talking to the girl he (and thus I) came up to meet. She's not 21 so she was kept from pretty much every establishment on the street. Big deal, I still wanted a drink because I figured, "I'm in Austin, on 6th and should by rights be drinking." After my first glass, I went to order another and then jump to some other joint. I, not wanting to cause a scene, nodded, and left. Grinding my teeth a bit. Plenty of watering holes here though, I thought to try another.
I swim up the stream of drunken hooligans, pass one chick who was vomiting on a curb. I ask a bearded man in womens clothes where a good place to drink was and he told me I was an idiot. I explained I wasn't an idiot, just that I was from Houston. Told me Houston was a shithole, and that there's a simular shithole down the way, the name of the bar escapes me but there was a lot of Rap blareing out of it. I go in to order a drink, it's 1:20 am by this time so I cut to the chase. Double of Glenfiddich, on the rocks. Lady behind the bar gives me a dirt look, like, "HEY! You don't look like a drunken UT Fratman! Where's the popped collar and what's with the hair?" This is not, I was sure, what Austin was supposed to be like. I thought I'd be 'harshing' the city's collective mellow, rather - it was totally harshing mine. Lady tells me, "No. We're all out."
I SEE THE GODDAMN BOTTLE BEHIND YOU! DON'T YOU LIKE MONEY? I WANT TO GIVE YOU MONEY FOR A DOUBLE OF SINGLE-MALT SCOTCH. REAL EASY - MAKE IT HAPPEN, BITCH.
I'm not paraphraseing. That had me removed from the building quickly. Real shithole indeed. Everyone in Houston always says how hip and cool Austin always is. How musical, and progressive and awesome everything and everyone is. It's "wierd," and it's "quirky," all that. So far it's like some regular assmaster joint in Houston, except magnified and then dumped out into an entire city.
So please, someone restore the myth. Tracer is not impressed.
(BTW: Austin is just as spread out as citys with 3x the population, unforgivable).
Progressive and awesome don't belong in the same sentence. Your experience was pretty amazing though. I have not been to Austin, and now I have even less interest in going, if that's possible.
Depending on how things pan out in the next few days, I'm getting my friend Brent to make me a Shirt that says, "Keep Houston Normal," (I've seen a lot of "Keep Austin Wierd" shirts, not just in this town either).

All that Austin wonderland shit is a myth. DFW, Houston, and San Antonio are much better.
I've seen bumper stickers that say "Keep Houston Ghetto" and "Keep San Antonio Lame" with the Alamo being the "a" in lame. :)
San Antonio has nothing good going for it except the Alamo - not because the Alamo is exciting, but because it's the Alamo.Quote:

The small amount of free time I have had in Austin was alright. Nothing super exciting. But I didn't get thrown out of any places, either. My loss I suppose.
