I've heard rumors that Sony's latest batch of BR discs (Ultraviolet, some other one) look better than the initial release, but as I've seen none of the discs, I have no idea if that's true or not. Sony still needs to get their ass in gear and move away from MPEG2 though - for no other reason than I'd like Blu-Ray to take off due to it having less retarded region encoding than HD-DVD. (Though supposedly Toshiba's unit ignores region encoding...)
All region coding is retarded. It's just one more reason why I'd rather pirate than buy the original.
Yeah, uhm, region encoding sucks, but it doesn't give you a valid excuse to then turn to piracy.
If a publisher deliberately encodes a disc not to work in my region, and there's no domestic alternative, then they clearly don't want my money anyway.
One Blu-Ray single-layer recordable disc is $25. A dual layer disc is going to be $48. Ouch.
